Who are our Members?
Who are our APNIC Members in Lao?
Source: https://www.apnic.net/about-apnic/organization/structure/members/
How do APNIC Members use IP
addresses?
• Data is sent over the Internet in discrete packets
– Each packet can be a few bytes, a few hundred bytes, or even larger
• Packets are sent from the ‘source’ to the ‘destination’
– When streaming a YouTube movie on your mobile phone:
• The YouTube server is mainly the source
• Your mobile phone is mainly the destination
• Every source and destination on the Internet must have an IP
address
– IPv4 example 203.0.113.15 (32-bit number)
– IPv6 example 2001:db8:200:ff:1:dc:77:ab (128-bit number)

Multi-homed network
MAY have a need for BGP and public ASN
Single-homed network
No need for public ASN
Why multihome with BGP and use a public
ASN?
Good interconnection strategy can
lower operation costs
Understanding your network traffic
could result in better overall network
experience
Path diversification allows you to
better evaluate interconnection
options and improve resiliency

Observation
• The networks in Lao are a good mix of ISPs, telcos and hosting
companies
• If the Lao Internet is going to grow similarly to other economies in
the South-east Asia region, are we likely to see more academic
and corporate companies deploy ASNs?
– Universities?
– Hosting/data centres?
– System integrators?
– Banks?
– And so forth
Looking ahead
• Regional trends
– Keeping traffic local by establishing multiple or bilateral peering
arrangements
– IXPs
– Rootservers
– Growth of local content
– eGov initiatives
– Hosting/cloud services
– Domestic eCommerce
– Domestic/regional news
– Entertainment (games, movies and so forth)
– Caching of international content

What are your thoughts?
• What’s the Internet experience like in Lao?
– From the point of view of consumers, academics, corporations, and
service providers?
• What will Lao’s Internet infrastructure look like in the future?

  • 10. How do APNIC Members use IP addresses? • Data is sent over the Internet in discrete packets – Each packet can be a few bytes, a few hundred bytes, or even larger • Packets are sent from the ‘source’ to the ‘destination’ – When streaming a YouTube movie on your mobile phone: • The YouTube server is mainly the source • Your mobile phone is mainly the destination • Every source and destination on the Internet must have an IP address – IPv4 example 203.0.113.15 (32-bit number) – IPv6 example 2001:db8:200:ff:1:dc:77:ab (128-bit number)

  • 13. Why multihome with BGP and use a public ASN? Good interconnection strategy can lower operation costs Understanding your network traffic could result in better overall network experience Path diversification allows you to better evaluate interconnection options and improve resiliency Cost Performance Resilience

  • 23. Observation • The networks in Lao are a good mix of ISPs, telcos and hosting companies • If the Lao Internet is going to grow similarly to other economies in the South-east Asia region, are we likely to see more academic and corporate companies deploy ASNs? – Universities? – Hosting/data centres? – System integrators? – Banks? – And so forth
  • 24. Looking ahead • Regional trends – Keeping traffic local by establishing multiple or bilateral peering arrangements – IXPs – Rootservers – Growth of local content – eGov initiatives – Hosting/cloud services – Domestic eCommerce – Domestic/regional news – Entertainment (games, movies and so forth) – Caching of international content Learn more about who’s peering where at: http://www.peeringdb.com
  • 25. What are your thoughts? • What’s the Internet experience like in Lao? – From the point of view of consumers, academics, corporations, and service providers? • What will Lao’s Internet infrastructure look like in the future?

  3. APNIC is the RIR – Regional Internet Registry for the Asia Pacific. It is one of 5 RIRs operating in the world today. The Regional Internet Registry system evolved over time, eventually dividing the world into five RIRs: African Network Information Centre (AfriNIC) for Africa American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) for the United States, Canada, several parts of the Caribbean region, and Antarctica. Latin America and Caribbean Network Information Centre (LACNIC) for Latin America and parts of the Caribbean region Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC) for Europe, Russia, the Middle East, and Central Asia When we talk about each RIR, they consist of the Internet community as a whole in its region. The Number Resource Organization (NRO) which is a coordinating body for the five Regional Internet Registries (RIRs) and they facilitate the joint coordination of activities between the RIRs. ----- Meeting Notes (21/11/2014 14:01) ----- Duplicate
  4. Internet number resources are distributed in a hierarchical manner. IANA is the central distribution organization, delegating resources to different RIRs. And then RIRs distribute their resources to LIR or ISPs based on their own policies.
