1. 1. Impact of ICT on Society

Security Measure

(Biometrics, Authentication)

Prepared By : Abdullah Afeeq b. Imam Jurjani Date : 29/05/2007
 2. 2. Authentication is a process where users verify that they say they are. The user who attempts to perform functions in a system is in fact the user who is authorised to do so.

Existing Authentication Method

Something you know:

User Id, password, pin number

Something you have:

Smart card, magnetic card, key

Something you know and have:

ATM card + pin number

Something you naturally have:

Fingerprint, face, iris, hand

 3. 3.

What is biometric?

A biometric is a measurable biological phenomena

Biometrics are automated methods of recognizing a person

based on a physiological or behavioral characteristics

Why it is preferred?

Accurate and able to speed up processes

Convenience: can be used in place of many existing security

methods

Becoming socially acceptance and inexpensive

 4. 4.

Biometrics Type – Fingerprint Scan

Uses 30 to 40 points at each finger

10 fingers per person

Biometrics Type – Iris Scan

Uses about 250 differentiating features

Very accurate

Higher matching performance

 5. 5.

Biometrics Type – Retina Scan

Uses over 400 points for identification

Very accurate

Biometrics Type – Hand Geometry

Uses 3D shape of hand

Hand length, width, thickness

 6. 6.

Biometrics Technology – Facial Scan

Measurement of facial features

Relationship between features

Minimal user cooperation required

Biometrics Technology – Signature Scan

Dynamics of signature creation

Acceleration, pressure, stroke length

 7. 7.

New Biometric Technology

DNA Matching

- analysis on DNA for identification

Vein Identification

- use vein patterns on the back of hand

 8. 8.

Conclusions

Biometric gives great impact to society. The need for convenience and high security has brought biometrics to the following applications :

National security

Military, immigration and other government purpose

Citizen Identification

Identify/authentify citizens interact with government agencies

PC/Network Access

Secure access to PCs, networks and other computer resources

Physical access/ Time and Attendance

Secure access to given area at a given time

Surveillance and Screening

Identify/authentify individuals present in a given location

Retail / ATM / Point of Sale:

Provide identification/authentication for transactions for goods and services

Criminal Identification

Identify/verify individuals in law enforcement application
