This document provides tips and strategies for using new media platforms to build a professional online presence and network. It discusses using LinkedIn, Twitter, blogs, and other sites to create a professional portfolio or profile. Tips include requesting recommendations on LinkedIn, participating in groups, writing articles, and customizing profiles. The document also provides examples of artifacts to include in portfolios to demonstrate expertise, such as academic papers, press releases, and design work.
4. Professional Portfolio Communities
These are communities that are designed, or can be easily designed, to provide a
viewer with a snapshot of your expertise.
LinkedIn often functions an interactive resume--the profile as a portfolio.
About.me and Flavors.me functions as an Online Business Card--it privileges the user’s
biography and links to all of the user’s social media presences in one place.
Wordpress functions as a standalone portfolio or a blogging social network.
Additional information: Both of these platforms have restrictive profile interfaces, they mediate “live” P2P Interaction. They also encourage users to
purchase premium services and/or obtain services from affiliates. Wordpress, on the other hand, enables the user to both design the portfolio design and
content arrangement. The WP user determines whether the site will be social (e.g. by approving comments, using the blogging feature, etc.).
6. Social Communities with Professional Activity
These are communities that are designed to mediate social activity between users as
the primary display content of the site. Although they may link to your
portfolios/profiles, they mediate a snapshot of the user “in action.”
Tumblr: Micro-blogging community
Twitter: An online telegraph, and a dynamic collaborative “news” space.
Facebook: One of the original 2.0 social networks. A prototype for LinkedIn.
Instagram: A photography-driven social network with many micro-blogging features.
7. LinkedIn isn’t the only
way to participate in
“professional social
networking.”

14. Since LinkedIn is one of
the most dominant new
media hiring venues,
you’ll need a strategy
tailored for this platform.
15. Requesting LinkedIn Contacts/Recommendations
Before I provide a list of tips, the first step is sending a personal note to make the
connection more memorable.
Note: If you have never met, mention your connection immediately and conclude the
email with a specific question about connecting.
Example 1: Dear X, I recently read your [article, book, whatever]. As a Y major, I was deeply interested in the way you discussed
A, B, C. It would be a pleasure to connect to you on LinkedIn. Would you accept my contact request?
Example 2: Dear X, my advisor Y recommended that I contact you after we discussed A, B, and C about our shared interest in D,
E, F. Would you be willing to connect with me here on LinkedIn?
In some cases, feel free to solicit a meeting. For example, if you are part of the same professional organizations and may have the
opportunity to meet at a conference, or if they are going to be a plenary speaker/workshop leader at a local event.
16. Additional Tips
1. Request at least three LinkedIn
recommendations (NOT
ENDORSEMENTS) each term
1. Write recommendations for other people
when you benefit from their leadership,
advice, and/or collaboration.
1. Aim to grow your contacts by at least 5-10
people per month
1. Participate in Groups and Forum
Discussions at least a few times
1. Write a PULSE article
6. Add “stuff” to the profile
7. Carefully proofread your information
8. Consider a 1-2 sentence about the experience,
not a bulleted list.
9. Use active voice
10. Revise for parallelism.
