  10. 10. Register/Sign up by picking a username (e.g. your own name or company name), and create a Twitter ID. Select a STRONG password with at least 8 characters (the longer, the better). Remember to change the password every now and then. Upload an appropriate profile photo (you personally or your brand/business logo, if you have your own business). Upload a background photo, preferably one you´ve taken personally, or your business logo. Choose a background design. Templates are available, but you can also upload a personal photo/your business logo. NOTE! Profile/background photos & designs can be changed regularly.   11. 11. Do not overanalyze. SIMPLY: DO IT. Create a personal/business Twitter account, unless you already have one. Twitter Inc is one of the most relevant online sites for you/your business. NOTE: If you do not have the time for it (e.g. as a business owner), make sure to hire someone/a company taking care of your Twitter account/s for you (e.g. a social media manager). A Twitter account/being present on Twitter is an essential part of your online business/sales/marketing/branding/communications strategy. Be polite and helpful to other users when communicating on Twitter. Tweet friendly and diplomatically. If debating, make sure to be correct and keep to the subject. Do not attack other users on a personal level. Engage with other users if possible, but keep your limits (try to limit the time you use online, and the content you share). Ways of increasing the number of retweets/other sharing your content on Twitter: -An engaged audience/following and people/users who support your brand/business •A large following alone is no guarantee for a large amount of retweets, but it increases the chances of other users finding your content and sharing it with others •Tweeting at appropriate times, several times a day (scheduling Tweets), but if you are a very active Tweeter, some users may also find it annoying to notice you Tweeting an X amount of times about the same topic/content (i.e. oversharing) -Buying retweet/favorite packages from providers (or users) offering SMM services. -Advertising on Twitter (check out Twitter´s prices for advertisements) -Sharing helpful, useful and valuable content -Using hashtags, mentions, GIF´s/images/photographs, videos… ©Anne-Maria Yritys 2018.   14. 14. “Every master was once an apprentice”. You will learn through experience. You can start by following friends/colleagues, and people you know. For many, following people you do not know personally may feel intimidating at first. Learn how to stretch your boundaries, little by little. Just do not be forceful. Invite people to connect with you/r business. Follow people/organizations/businesses that are of interest to you. Some may follow back, even celebrities. You can always Tweet them directly to ask if they would follow you (back). Anyway, the number of followers is not always what is most important or relevant… depends upon your purpose/goal. You may just become addicted to how Twitter works, watch out and make sure not to spend all your time on social media! Engage with your followers/friends! As a business owner, you can provide online, real-time customer service through Twitter, including handling complaints etc. Growing your account to the first 5.000 followers is the most challenging part. Have patience! Be active and do not give up easily if you are dedicated to growing your amount of followers/following. Make sure to engage with relevant people and help others! Try to keep a balance between giving and taking. Give other users credit, remember to thank them, and to mention them. Twitter is not a platform for only sharing your personal thoughts. Engagement is important. Do not spam people/other Twitter users with too much, or inappropriate material.   15. 15. Tweet with value, about topics that are of interest to you personally/relevant to your business. Users who share your beliefs/interests are more likely to connect with you/follow you/your business. Follow users of interest to you. Do not expect that others will start following you without any effort from your side. This is one of the basic rules in online networking. Unless you are a celebrity of course who gets followers without following anyone back. Show genuine interest in others. Follow, and see if people follow you back. It is very common on Twitter, and part of the “Twetiquette”, to follow other users back. Unless the user is a spammer, a fake account etc. USE COMMON SENSE, AND REMEMBER: MANNERS ARE EQUALLY IMPORTANT ONLINE AS OFFLINE! You can always block/mute disturbing accounts. You can also use Twitter´s advanced filters to prevent unwanted accounts from contacting you. ©Anne-Maria Yritys 2018.   16. 16. Start by following e.g. 100 users, and see how many follow back. Wait a few days. If the user does not follow back, you can decide whether you want to continue following the user or not. Try not to un/follow aggressively. It may lead to Twitter freezing/shutting down your account. Use hashtags (#), and where appropriate, @ mentions, in your Tweets. It gives your Tweets more visibility, and if you e.g. hashtag #leadership, or #marketing, users sharing your interests are more likely to find your content (and follow you). Do not overuse hashtags. 3-4 hashtags per Tweet is a general rule. If every word includes # it makes you look like a spammer/may be irrelevant. Remember: Only your creativity and imagination are the limits for the amount of interests/objectives in your activities! Dream, discover, explore, be passionate & ENGAGED!   17. 17. Twitter followers can be bought, but consider it carefully, since: - You have no guarantee of the quality of the users. If you buy 10.000 followers, they may all be fake/robots and so on. - Your real followers may notice that you have bought (fake) followers, and there is a risk that they will unfollow you, or at least lose their respect. Anyway, it is up to you. Use common sense, or whatever you think is appropriate. - However, if you decide to buy Twitter followers, make sure to research the service provider beforehand to ensure that they provide you with real, active users. - The larger your audience, the easier it becomes to increase your following.   21. 21. Before branding yourself/your business on Twitter, make sure you understand what branding signifies. A BRAND is a personal/business image with certain values. It is not only the visible logo of your business, but also includes your personal/business values, your moral and ethics as an individual/business, the mission, vision and purpose of YOU and/or YOUR BUSINESS. Successful branding requires for you/r business to: - Define clearly what you/r business values are/what you want to accomplish through you/r business activities - Communicate your brand to your audience in a captivating manner - Believe in your brand image and its sustainability. Why should people/organizations do business with YOU? How transformable/adaptive to change you are: In today´s world, the survival of a brand depends not only upon its ability to react to external changes, but also how well it mirrors the needs of consumers and their preferences. A brand also has to have credibility and be capable of winning clients´ confidence in order to thrive and to move forward. Instead of stagnating as a brand, focus upon providing your clients with quality work/products, great customer experience/service, caring about your clients, and engaging your clients in various ways. Twitter is an excellent communications platform and branding tool, since: - You can rather easily reach and build an international/global community and find customers in your target market - Twitter is inexpensive!   25. 25. Twitter branding/marketing is efficient, but you/r business must invest either TIME or MONEY (or, both) to ensure brand recognition on Twitter. Unless you personally have the time (AND, patience!), consider hiring a professional/team of professionals/a social media marketing expert to take care of the work for you. Make sure that you know the terms and conditions of their service, and that you can rely upon the content they are sharing on your behalf. Think about some of the largest, most expensive and best known brands in the world. What are the secrets behind their success? Your brand identity could be about creating the most unforgettable, tailored travel experiences to your clients (e.g. a specialized travel agency, or a hotel). It could also be that your business is about helping your clients solve various business-related issues, e.g. regarding business expansion into new markets (market entry consultancy). Your brand identity is defined by what you/your business is about, what your expertise is, and how passionate you are about the products/services you are offering your clients.
