  1. 1. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Windows Deployment Services is a feature in server 2008 that is used to Install the Operating System (Vista, Server 2008 & Windows 7) on the Client side. In previous version of Server we had the feature of RIS (Remote Installation Services) that is used to install only (Windows XP, Server 2003) It also takes long time to copy all the file and folder from the CD Rom & It also had the long method of configuration. But the Server 2008 takes less time then RIS. It also has a very short configuration. It copy only two CAB file from DVD Rom (Install.wim & Boot.wim).
  2. 2. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES DNS : - A well configured and running DNS to resolution of name and to configuration of Active Directory. DHCP : - A configured DHCP Server to provide IP address to client for Communication with WDS Server. Domain Controller : - To provide Authentication to the WDS Client and Authorization to the DHCP Server. NTFS Volume : - For Security and Installation of Domain Controller (Domain Controller can not be loaded on FAT Volume).
  3. 3. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES PXE LAN Card : - It stands for Pre-boot Execution Environment. These type LAN card has the inbuilt Driver in their memory. Therefore It gets the IP address before Installation of Operation System. Network Connection : - Network must be configured properly to received the Installation files and folder from WDS Server.

  5. 5. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Go to on Run and then Key Servermana ger.msc and then Press Enter. Point to Roles and then Click on Add Roles.
  6. 6. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES In Add Roles Wizard the same page will opened And press Next to continue.
  7. 7. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES In Select Server Roles page Select Windows Deployment Services from the Bottom of List. And then Click Next to continue
  8. 8. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES On the Overview of Windows Deployment Services click Next to execute
  9. 9. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES On the Select Role Services page make sure that the Both (Deployment Server & Transport Server) are selected And then Click Next to continue
  10. 10. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES On confirm Installation Selections page click Install to install the WDS Services.

  14. 14. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES To Configure the WDS press Windows + r key together to open Run. Then key wdsmgmt.m sc to open WDS Management page. Click OK.
  15. 15. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES The Same Windows Deployment Services page will be displayed.
  16. 16. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Expand Server and then Right Click on FQDN of Server (ex. Server.Contoso. com) And then click on Configure Server.
  17. 17. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Welcome Page will be displayed where the server side requirement will be listed. Click Next to continue
  18. 18. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES In the Remote Installation Folder Location page by default C:RemoteInstall will be Selected Click Next if you want to save the folder on the C: Drive. Otherwise Browse the Location.
  19. 19. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES  A System Volume Warning message will be display if you select the C: Drive to store the Remote Installation files. Click Yes to Terminate the warning.
  20. 20. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Make sure that both Options are selected in the DHCP Option 60 page. And then click Next to continue.
  21. 21. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES On the PXE Server Initial Settings page select “Respond to all (known and unknown ) client computers” and then click Finish.

  23. 23. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Remove the Check mark from “Add image to the Windows Deployment Server now” in Configuratio n Complete page. And then click Finish.
  24. 24. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES After the Finishing the last page. Expand the FQDN of Server (ex. Server.contoso. com) Right Click on Install Image. Click on Add Install Image.
  25. 25. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES In the Image Group Page give a Group Name next to Create a new image group or Let them same. And click Next to continue.
  26. 26. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES After clicking Next Press Browse from Image File.
  27. 27. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Click on Computer from Favorite Links.
  28. 28. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES And then double click on DVD Rom Drive.
  29. 29. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Double Click on Source Folder in the DVD Rom.
  30. 30. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Select Install.wim from Source folder and then Click Open.

  32. 32. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Check mark on only the Edition that you want to install on the client side and then click Next.

  35. 35. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Click Finish after completing the process.
  36. 36. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Make sure that and entry in being displayed in the ImageGroup 1.
  37. 37. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Now Right Click Boot Image. Then select Add Boot Image.
  38. 38. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES The same page will be displayed after Continuing from the previous wizard. And then click Browse from Image File page.
  39. 39. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES The same page will displayed. Then select Boot.wim from Select Windows Image (WIM) File page. And then click Open.

  43. 43. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES The same Task Progress page will displayed.
  44. 44. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Click Finish after the completion the process.
  45. 45. WDS WINDOWSDEPLOYMENTSERVICES Verify that the links is listed in the Boot Image.
