  1. 1. Open Power Monitor Well this my attempt to create my own Open PowerMonitor System. The main purpose of the project is to create a powermonitoring system that would send electricity usageof a particular user to a web server• ANIKET MAITHANI• AMITY SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY
  2. 2. Cooking a dinner, heating a house, lighting astreet, keeping a hospital open, running afactory – all these require energy. Energy isthus at the heart of everybodys qualityof life and a crucial factor for economiccompetitiveness and employment. But globalpopulation and energy needs increase hand-in-hand and the current fossil-fuel basedenergy system is not sustainable as itcontributes substantially to climate changeand depends heavily on imports from very fewcountries. Answers to the dual challenge ofsatisfying increasing energy needs andcombating climate change at the same timeare urgently needed and energy research canplay an essential role. India can not movetowards sustainable growth without radicalchanges in the way it generates and usesenergy.Energy

Why Energy Monitoring System? When energy consumptionbecomes available for viewing andanalysis, people tend to find naturalways to reduce their own consumption It alerts them to situations wherethey may be acting in anunintentionally wasteful manner. Inhouseholds, this reduction can be asmuch as 7% when the power meter isplaced in a visible location within thehouse. That is the benefit a single metercan do, imagine an entire systemdedicated exclusively to energymonitoring and analysis.

  7. 7. DIGITAL CLAM(CT) METERCurrent Transformer
  8. 8. Current Transformer A current transformer (CT) is used formeasurement of alternating electric currents. A current transformer produces a reduced currentaccurately proportional to the current in the circuit,which can be conveniently connected to measuringand recording instruments.
  9. 9. Before we proceed further …. The readings which CT will detect will be analog innature and I need to convert that into digital data sothat I can transfer it to COM.

Difference between Analog & Digital?!Analog signal is a continuous signal whichrepresents physical measurements.Digital signals are discrete time signalsgenerated by digital modulation.Uses continuous range of values torepresent informationUses discrete or discontinuous values torepresent informationAnalog technology is cheaper but thereis a limitation of size of data that can betransmitted at a given time.Digital technology has revolutionizedthe way most of the equipments work.   11. 11. Now comes Arduino NG ATMEGA8 into action, this is probablyone of the initial model of Arduino family, and it’s quite OLDSCHOOL, but very effective. As you must be aware thatArduino comes with built in A2D converter. So I coded myprogram into the Arduino using GUI based program forArduino Embeddedment that comes in SYNAPTIC PACAKGEMANAGER IN UBUNTU.
  12. 12. So I added few more components, thanks to openpowermonitor.orgthat provided me a bit of guidance! And voila my project was ready.Just for my convenience I added an LED 4 bit display!

  14. 14. Not over yet!! Since I have a serial to USB converter, in my mainsystem, I am writing a python script that wouldenable data to be fetched from COM port and then Ican send that data to a web-server. Moreover the work is still in progress Any help regarding this is welcome
