  2. 2. Background <ul><li>The Maya cities were found primarily in the jungles of southern Mexico and Central America </li></ul><ul><li>Cities were full of hieroglyphs, carvings were found on monuments, objects pained on pottery and written on bark paper books </li></ul>
  3. 3. Destruction of Maya Writings <ul><li>During the 16 th century inquisition, Diego de Landa was a friar that destroyed many hieroglyphic writings because he claimed them to be tools of the devil </li></ul><ul><li>There was a great ceremony for the destruction in the middle of the plaza </li></ul><ul><li>Only 4 partial books survived, it took centuries of struggle to get what was lost </li></ul><ul><li>The main objective was to spread Catholicism. Mayas were tortured and arrested. Maya scribes were forced to learn European scripts. </li></ul>

The Great Cities <ul><li>Around AD 200 great cities were built, Tikal, Palenque, and Copan </li></ul><ul><li>Around the 9 th century people vanished from cities </li></ul><ul><li>J Eric Thompson (1930-1960) dominated hieroglyphics. Came up with classification system with over 800 signs </li></ul><ul><li>There was a Russian Mayanist that tied pictures to sounds but was discredited due to politics </li></ul><ul><li>Tatiana found patterns for every 5 years. Always showed a picture of a sacrificial victim. Discovered they were life histories of rulers. </li></ul>

The Aftermath <ul><li>David Stuart began ass a kid with hieroglyphics </li></ul><ul><li>Mayas used different hieroglyphs for same meaning </li></ul><ul><li>Hard work from several individuals cracked the Maya code, can be read aloud </li></ul><ul><li>Some glyphs can be read allowed </li></ul><ul><li>Some hieroglyphs depicted out of this world creatures, a lot of blood, scalping, disembowelment, crippled and burning showed violent side of Mayas </li></ul>
