Quentin Tarantino's Use Of Humor In Pulp Fiction
Pulp Fiction is a gangster film, both written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. This 1994
production is an action packed crime film, that also contains some very dark humor, as well as many
thrilling and impactful moments. The story starts off with two hitmen, Vincent Vega and Jules
Winnfield, who had been assigned to retrieve a case full of money for their boss, Marcellus Wallace.
The film switches plot lines, to a man named Butch Coolidge, a boxer, who was also connected to
Marcellus. Butch finds himself in trouble with Marcellus, after he wins the fight he was paid to

believable aspect, through the use of their humor, seriousness, and violence. With theses
characteristics, they are able to encapture the true image of hitmen, and establish a level of
experience right at the get go. Tarantino's ability to make humor out some of the most intense
moments, creates a powerful, yet light hearted mood throughout the whole film. The directors
dialogue and story line both play significant roles, in establishing their overall theme, through their

  • 9. How Does Voltaire Use Humor In Candide Comedy is often thought of as light–hearted humor; however, it can be used to incite thoughtful laughter– using a humorous situation to invoke reflection. Two examples of books that incite thoughtful laughter are: America (the Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction by Jon Stewart and Candide by Voltaire. The two authors use humor to satirize how people think and the way they act and to incite the reader to actually think about the subject presented in their texts. In Candide, Voltaire uses dark humor and irony to attack philosophical optimism, government, religion, and human greed. Voltaire mainly attacks philosophical optimism– and this is seen through his character Pangloss, who believes that everything is the "best of all possible worlds" even after getting syphilis, being almost killed, and sold as a slave. In Chapter XVI, Candide and Cacambo are captured by Oreilons who plan to roast and eat them. Candide's reaction was to state "All is well, I won't argue about it...", but our mind tells us that being roasted alive and then eaten isn't fine and dandy. How Does Shakespeare Use Humor In Twelfth Night Humans have been on this planet for an estimated 200,000 years and yet we are still a cruel and immoral species that finds the pain and manipulation of others amusing. Though the Twelfth Night written by William Shakespeare takes place 400 years ago the humor in it has not changed as people still find humour in Sir Andrew's antics, laugh at Malvolio's imprisonment, and giggle at the misfortune of Antonio. The reason for that is simple; it is in human nature to mock others. One example of Sir Andrew's abuse comes from before his first line is spoken. Maria is reprimanding Sir Toby for his drinking and bringing is a knave too woo lady Olivia Sir Toby reasons with her saying "Why, he has three thousand ducats a year." (the Twelfth Night, William Shakespeare 1.3.20) This shows that Sir Toby does not care to reason that he has a kind heart or a fine personality but only wealth for drinking. • 41. How Does Humor Use Humor? For as long as I have been in school, there has been a negative stigma around laughing and making jokes in the classroom. As a potential psychology major, I am quite fascinated with why our brains work the way they do, and how they grow, develop, and learn. That is why I was so intrigued when research came out claiming that appropriate humor can be used as a tool in the classroom by alleviating anxiety, stress, and helping relate the content by using funny, real world examples. When an instructor successfully uses humor, the learning environment that is created can be a catalyst for success. Humor can alleviate anxiety, especially in second language classrooms. "First, Young (1991) argues that when students are asked to deliver their thoughts or idea in a foreign language in which they have limited competence, their performance can be very threatening to their self–image" (Deb 2). If you have taken a foreign language class, in which speaking in front of the class is required, you may have experienced the anxiety that comes along. "Will I slur my words, pronounce something wrong, or choke under the pressure and not say anything at all?" Are all thoughts that come into many second–language learners' minds. When humor is utilized correctly and gets a positive reaction from students, such as smiling and laughing, it creates a light, non judgmental learning environment. The tone of opposition created by presenting both positive and negative aspects of the ideas in the story, enables the reader to gain a clear image of the setting, and to examine both sides of the story. Similar to the way in which two sides are presented to form opposition in the story, two groups of characters create irony. Although this treatment might sound somewhat unorthodox, its value as a remedy can be traced back to ancient times when Hypocrites, in his medical treatise, stressed the importance of "a gay and cheerful mood on the part of the physician and patient fighting disease" (Bakhtin 67). Aristotle viewed laughter as man's quintessential privilege: "Of all living creatures only man is endowed with laughter" (Bakhtin 68). In his role as "Nanabush" the trickster, a central figure in Chippewa (Ojibwa) storytelling, Nanapush demonstrates the power of Native American humor in his own life, when he challenges the gods and cheats death by playing a trick on them: "During the year of the sickness, when I was the last one left, I saved myself by starting a story . . . . The trickster figure is characterized as a man of many guises, dualistic in nature–good and bad–and often considered quite a lover. He is a survivor, physically and psychologically. As one who endures, he transcends the temporal and functions as an affirmation of the self. The trickster is also "central to the tribe's worldview," with power that extends beyond himself, guiding his people toward a view of themselves and of possibility that they might not have seen otherwise (Ghezzi 444). Here, two murderers are sent to kill Clarence. The text is so rich in indirectly describing the demeanor of these two, and the reader undoubtedly chuckles when reading the dialogue between the two of them. Primarily, the reader sees this in lines 110–115: "I'll go back to the duke of Gloucester and tell him so. / Please, just wait a minute. I'm hoping my holy mood will pass. / It usually only lasts about twenty seconds. / How are you feeling now? / Actually, I'm still feeling some pangs of conscience. / Even in modern times, the idea of a conscience coming and going instead of being unwavering is funny. Further on, the two murderers talk about conscience, and how nobody would listen to it even if it flew out of a wallet. Of course, no Shakespeare play would be complete without the use of puns. One writing that Mark Twain is not as famous for, but is still a well known piece of work for showing the use of humor in his writings is, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County". This work starts off slow without much humor until later on in the writing. The humor picks up as Twain includes bits of sarcasm to the mix. The humor in this short work is not so hidden or subtle as it may have been in some of Twain's other writings. One example of this sort of dry humor is, "And Smiley says, sorter indifferent like, 'It might be a parrot, or it might be a canary, may be, but it an't it's only just a frog.'" (Jumping Frog). I will also be looking at the possible reasons why Plath uses humor throughout Lady Lazarus, and what purpose it serves as a literary device. Plath's strong use of sarcasm is present in Lady Lazarus from the very first lines of the poem; Plath writes: "I have done it again/One year in every ten/I manage it –" (Plath, 1–3). This opening stanza is very tongue–in–cheek, and through the seemingly nondescript, nonchalant way she begins the poem, it sets up the first stanza as a foil for the next stanza, which begins: "A sort of walking miracle, my skin/Bright as a Nazi lampshade," (4–5). Furthermore, Vonnegut really pushes the probing of humanity's approval of war and its terrible consequences through the views of the Tralfamadorians about the fluidity of time and predestination which impacts the structure of his plot. Billy Pilgrim's character is a perfect example of how Vonnegut is pushing the questioning of society's acceptance of war and its unfortunate effects though his ability to take a negative and horrific event and have it propel him into a positive past or present event right away. From previous years he's made references to "the Hunger Games" and drunk texting, and said he has a list that rhymes with bucket list for his last year in office. Such as in their video named "Racist Zombies" when there is a zombie apocalypse and all the white people in the world are turned into zombies but there are no black zombies because they aren't attacked. Satire and Humor is a Vital Function of our Society Humor and satire is an entertaining and extremely effective method for highlighting social ideologies, challenging a governmental system or an organization, exposing injustice, and encouraging positive change in perspective. In his book, Status Anxiety, Alain de Botton asserts that humorists are a vital part of society as they are always successful in communicating, conveying, and delivering their message or idea to the public and the community. Humorists and satirists have demonstrated their vital role in inspiring freedom of speech and thought, which motivates progressive changes, in political election campaigns hosted on TV almost daily, and in Mark Twain's satire of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
