A Brief History of Lloyds of London <ul><li>Lloyds of London was established in 1688 in a Coffee house in London, when traders representatives would meet members and pay a levy to cover their ships and their cargo against damage whilst travelling at sea. </li></ul><ul><li>Modern business is still done on the same basis, Lloyds brokers approach underwriters who represent the syndicates and present the risk. Underwriters rate the risk as presented, reputation is paramount. </li></ul><ul><li>Since humble beginnings at the coffee shop, Lloyds now occupies the iconic building at Lime Street. The building not only contains the insurance market, but also the ‘Nelson Collection’, The Lutine Bell and Loss Book. In fact any losses at sea by a vessel insured by Lloyds are still recorded in the Loss book as they have for the last 200 or so years.
