3. The Task
• Create a segment of a radio broadcast, in an
industry-standard format, giving information in
the form of school news, along with interviews,
jingles, vox pops and music.
• This will be a group task, in groups of 2-3 people.
• The segment should be between 15-25 minutes
long, including a couple of short songs (no longer
than 3 and a half minutes per song – use
copyright free songs!)
4. What are Vox Pops?
• Vox Pops are short soundbites, recorded of the
public, giving their brief opinion on a topic of
interest.
• Each vox pop should be very short and should not
be more than 4-8 seconds long.
• You could use them to give different
pupils/teachers/family members’ opinions on
something.
• The idea is that you should have vox pops from
different people giving different points of view.
5. What are Jingles?
• Jingles are short, catchy musical themes that
are used to start and conclude different
segments of a radio broadcast.
• Each radio show usually has its own specially
recorded jingle which identifies it to the
audience.
6. Existing radio shows
• We need to listen to existing radio shows to
get an idea of how they ‘feel’ and ‘sound’
when we listen to them.
• We also need to understand how the show
ties in one element to another – for example
moving from a song to the host speaking, and
from the host speaking into a news bulletin,
and so on.
7. Here are a few clips from a radio show
• Note down how often you hear a change from
one section of the show to another and what
techniques they use to move on.
• Also note down if you notice anything else –
for example the format of the news – the
amount of people who’s voices you hear and
at what time.
8. What program will we use?
• You are free to research what program to use, but I
would recommend using Audacity, which can be
used on both Windows and Mac.
• Have a listen to the file I made quickly, showing a
few different effects…
• Now watch how I did certain effects as I
demonstrate.
• Now, try and recreate the piece yourself.
