A New Way To Amsterdam

  1. 1. A New Way To Amsterdam Andrew Larcombe Geospatial Consultancy & Development andrew@andrewl.net twitter: andrewl http://andrewl.net
  2. 2. Cycling from Dunkerque to Amsterdam You're crazy
  3. 3. Cloudmade Routing
  4. 4. Cloudmade Routing
  5. 5. Open Cyclemap
  6. 6. There is a better way  LF1 Nordzeeroute  6,000km transnational route  Relationship exists, but not well marked up in OSM  Patchy coverage
  7. 7. LF-1 (relation=2761)
  8. 8. Cycling and mapping from Dunkerque to Amsterdam  A great way to see the country  A great way to cover large amounts of tracks  Needs a 'post processing' approach to mapping  Collect data + photos, review and  process later.
  9. 9. Hardware  Nokia E71 – primary GPS  Quick GPS fixes, awesome battery life (9 hours GPS  tracking)
  10. 10. Hardware  Ye Olde Etrex  Bulletproof, goanywhere, solid. Backup device  provides belt and braces approach.
  11. 11. Hardware  Nokia N73  Takes 640x480 exif JPEG every 120 seconds using a  Python script
  12. 12. Hardware  Dell Mini 9 netbook running JOSM
  13. 13. Ready to go
  14. 14. Smash!  Bicycles + Rain + Tram Lines = Pain. Who knew?  Could only ride, and map, half of the journey.  This is why...
  15. 15. The Good News  GPS tracks for the whole days ride  Great selection of photos as a memory aid...
  16. 16. Context  A user of the item being mapped has a different  (better?) perspective than another person.  Who can use this: cyclists, mopeds, horses, cars?
  17. 17. Context  Each of these cycle direction signs are targetted  towards different users
  18. 18. Final thoughts  Horrific injuries notwithstanding, bike touring +  mapping is fun!  Bike tour mapping events?  Use commercial touring companies?   Not just ways, but all the 'cycling infrastructure' –  parking, hire, signage, shops, etc.   Could feed into OpenStreetView?
  19. 19. Thank you Andrew Larcombe Geospatial Consultancy & Development andrew@andrewl.net twitter: andrewl http://andrewl.net
