Statement of All That Philly Jazz Director on Induction of Billie Holiday into Philadelphia Walk of Fame

  1. 1. Philadelphia, April 7, 2015—All That Philly Jazz Director Faye Anderson issued the following statement on the induction of Billie Holiday into the Philadelphia Music Alliance Walk of Fame: Today is the centennial of the birth of Billie Holiday. The iconic jazz vocalist is often imitated but she’s never been duplicated. Lady Day’s “Strange Fruit” helped pave the way for the Civil Rights Movement. It’s never too late to do the right thing. I want to commend the Philadelphia Music Alliance for today’s announcement that their birthday gift to Billie Holiday is induction into the Walk of Fame. I look forward to being there when Billie Holiday takes her rightful place on the Avenue of the Arts. About All That Philly Jazz: All That Philly Jazz is a digital history project that is telling the story of Philadelphia’s rich jazz tradition. The project is at the intersection of technology, public art and civic engagement. We are mapping venues, landmarks and jazz-related cultural assets, including Walk of Fame plaques and murals. The project will introduce new audiences to jazz and serve as a national model for cultural heritage preservation. A Code for Philly project, All That Philly Jazz stems from Music Hack, a music-related hackathon. For more information, visit www.phillyjazz.us. Contact Faye M.
