Tariffs <ul><li>A tariff is a tax on imported goods </li></ul><ul><li>Imported means things brought from other places </li></ul><ul><li>Between 1816 and 1832, Congress passed high tariffs on goods made outside the country. </li></ul><ul><li>British textiles became very expensive. The only cloth most people could afford was from the mills of New England </li></ul><ul><li>Congress used tariffs to help the American companies </li></ul><ul><li>Tariffs were good for northern industries because congress gave money to them </li></ul>www.docsouth.unc.edu

Territories <ul><li>Another reason for the civil war was that new territories were being settled. </li></ul><ul><li>The South wanted the new territories to be admitted to the Union as slave states </li></ul><ul><li>The North wanted the new territories to be free </li></ul><ul><li>Other people people thought the new territories should have the right to vote whether they wanted to be free or slave (States Rights) </li></ul>
