Computer Assisted Learning

  1. 1. TOPIC :- Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) Presented by Anum Maqsood Roll no 5
  2. 2. COMPUTER-ASSISTED LEARNING  Computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is succinctly defined in a seminal work by Levy (1997: p. 1) as "the search for and study of applications of the computer in language teaching and learning".
  3. 3.  PURPOSE :-  To assess the teaching process  To review and reinforce  To promote foundation mastery  To promote remediation  To motivational environment
  4. 4. TYPES OF CAL SOFTWARE  Drill and practice  Simulation  Tutorials  Controlled learning  Games
  5. 5.  Drill and practice is good for fundamental mastery.
  6. 6. SIMULATION  This has proved quite useful in learning problem-solving ,the highest cognitive domain.
  7. 7.  TUTORIAL  Presentation of the content in a structured way and instant feedback and reinforcement to the learner.  This mode ,if used well ,could result in 90% retention of the content (compare with 30% retention after the best lecture).
  8. 8. CONTROLLED LEARNING  It provides a course of study in an instructional sequence on the pattern of branching program
  9. 9.  TRADITIONAL TEACHING  A single teacher giving lectures to a group of students who are expected to use their notes and textbook to prepare for periodic examinations.
  10. 10. CAL TEACHING  Teacher Independent  Reduce work load  Time saving  Active learner  Advance 
  11. 11.  ADVANTAGES  Reduced the work load of teaching.  Improve motivation  Reach the large audience  Multiple dimensional learning  Promote interactive learning.  Builds confidence among students.  Provide immediate feedback.
  12. 12.  DISADVANTAGES  It is a mechanical approach.  Mental and physical fatigue.  It is vary expensive.  None effective for some applications(e.g. reasoning)  Lack of infrastructure  Lack of knowledge  Lack of computer literacy.
  13. 13.  EXAMPLES OF TOOLS  Spreadsheet program  Statistic packages  Hypermedia software  Desktop publishing software  Presentation software  CAD software  etc.
