Distance education is defined as education that takes place via electronic media linking instructors and students who are not together in a classroom. It involves students working independently at home or in the office while communicating with faculty and peers through email, online forums, videoconferencing, and other computer-based methods. Distance education technologies have evolved from early use of printed materials delivered by transportation methods to modern synchronous methods like videoconferencing and asynchronous methods allowing flexible access to course materials.

I think it is better to say Distance Education than
distance learning because education is more general
and it include the teaching and learning process and
it is large system that have different components.
However, learning is only part of education process
or system and it may happened or not.
