Women From 1850 To 1950 Essay
Gender roles, societal expectations and gainful employment for women in America were quite
limited prior to the early 1800s. By 1850 we can see that doors were opening little by little due to
subtle changes in attitudes and the needs of our emerging industrialized nation. Many upper middle
class women were concerned with more than domesticity. They were felt that a woman was more
than a wife and mother only concerned with her home and family. Between 1850 and 1950 the three
most important changes for women were political voice due to the women's suffrage movement,
expanded access to education, and rich, educated women leading the way to social reforms. Prior to
the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, women were powerless to make important political
decisions. They could not cast their vote and therefore held no political power to make changes in
policies or laws. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 1890 Jane Addams brought to America the "settlement" project movement she had seen in Europe
on an extended vacation after college. She founded Hull House, a "settlement house" dedicated to
help poor immigrant women and children in Chicago. She and her like–minded college graduate
friends would live and work in the huge mansion offering everything for free. The would hold
classes to provide skills, political lessons, free lectures, art exhibits and even started kindergarten for
the children among many things. Addams and Kelly would campaign for child labor laws and
maximum work week for the women as well. The "settlement house" movement would spread to
other cities. This move to provide charity was before there was any government social welfare. The
immigrants benefitted from these programs but so did the young women volunteering. The
volunteers would learn how to relate to cultural difference, how to successfully get laws to protect
the vulnerable and become more open–minded than

Introduction
In 2000, the Board of Ursinus College, raised its tuition from $19,331 to $23,460. This turned out to
be a 17.6% increase. Surprisingly, the tuition increase proved to be a positive change for Ursinus
College. The college received more than 200 applicants than its previous year (Brickley, Smith and
Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Other regional institutions such as University of Notre Dame, Bryn
Mawr College and Rice University also experienced a similar trend once they increased their tuition
rates (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). The president of Ursinus College deduced
that the tuition increase affected enrollment rate (increased enrollment). She simply stated that
"people don't want cheap" (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Today, Susan Hansen,
Admissions Director of East Liberal Arts College, wishes to increase tuition and reduce financial aid
available to students (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Moreover, she has expressed
that "increasing tuition and reducing the amount of financial aid will solve the schools financial
problems" (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). This will be done by "increasing an
effective tuition from $15,000 to $25,000" (Brickley et al., 2009). She also projects that the tuition
increase enrollment from 400 to 600 students (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman,

Everyday Use By Alice Walker Analysis
Heritage is something that is defined as who you are and where you came from, it's a practice that
has been handed down by the past tradition(s). After reading this story, there will be realization how
much it's being used in this story. The Author herself involves the difference of how each character
shows how they represent and act when it comes to their traits. What I want to prove in "Everyday
Use" by Alice Walker is the two viewpoints of heritage, the characterization, the setting, and the
imagery. Walker describes how the house they lived in "This last house, owned by and symbolic of
Wangero, embodies also the cultural problem" (Cowart 60). "It is three rooms, just like the one that
burned, except the roof is tin; they don't make shingle roofs any more. There are no real windows,
just some holes cut in the sides, like the portholes in a ship, but not round and not square, with
rawhide holding the shutters up on the outside. This house is in a pasture, too, like the other one".
(Walker p14)" Mama prefers the yard to the confining house, where the muggy air fails to circulate
freely. The outdoors is a place of freedom, whereas the interior of the house offers restraint and
discomfort." (Spark notes 4) Dee could never accept the fact that they lived in such and awful house,
that she would do any possible thing to ruin it, and by that she will even willing burn their first
house down. Wherever they would live next she wouldn't mind staying, but she made it clear

Story Of An Hour Analysis
In her article Kate Chopin's View on Death and Freedom in The Story of an Hour, Xuemei Wan
proposes that Kate Chopin The Story of an Hour expresses birth and death, psychology of Mrs.
Mallard, and freedom. The Story of an Hour written by the American woman writer, Kate Chopin
(1851–1904) fully shows us the tremendous conflict between life and death among those women
who had more self–awareness. Who had less social living space according to the established social
norms 100 years ago in a dramatic way. The heroine's strong desire for freedom and sudden death.
This reminds us of the philosophical thought on life and death of Zhuangzi, ancient Chinese thinker,
Martin Heidegger, which deconstruct and transcend the conflict between them, and many more. In
this essay, I will be critiquing Xuemei Wen article showing the strengths, weaknesses, and notable
features.
To me Wen showed some ideas in which I think are strongly valid in this article. For example, Wen
wrote" This astonishing story strongly indicates that how deeply Mrs. Mallard desired her own
freedom, but there was a conflict between her life and death. She had her own contemplation about
life such as love, marriage, and freedom, but it was not an appropriate thing over hundred years ago
for a lady to have her own ideas against the established ones." I feel that Wen pointed this out
because some readers are focused solely on the main point of grief that they forget the secondary
strain of feminism at that time. Another valid point she made is when she wrote "Her sister,
Josephine, reminded us of her conventional thought that women should attach themselves to their
husbands." Wen explained this part of the story better than the story itself in my opinion.
Then, there were some points that I felt were not well supported in this article. Wen wrote about
Zhuang Zi philosophy that I felt really did not add to the article and could have been left out. She
wrote only three lines that were valid to me. She wrote "Zhuang Zi was adamant in declining an
offer, and would rather be an orphaned piglet, saying, "I would rather play in a muddy ditch and be
happy than be fettered by the state" (Yao–yu, 1991, p. 79). That means he would prefer never to

360 Degree Photography Affordances and Constraints
Media has changed vastly over the decades. We have different styles of media, different ways to
view media, and so many different options when it comes to creating media. A recent technology
that has started to gain traction is 360–degree photography. This new technology allows people to
view more than traditional 2–D perspective. With this new way of being able to capture a scene
comes many affordances and constraints.
Being able to capture everything around you, then allow another person to experience entirely the
same scene is something that has never been able to be done before. The technology for 360–degree
photography is most likely early in its development. That being ... Show more content on

Having devices that allow us to put on a headpiece and be put into another reality is a huge step for
media.
With these devices, unfortunately, come many constraints. The content creator has more options for
what the viewer can see, but at the same time it may not be what they want the viewer to see. In
most forms of media today there is a main point that the viewer is observing. 2–D perspective video
creators are able to change perspectives of how the viewer sees the media, but with 360 degrees the
viewer may not see it in the same way the original creator intended. The viewer may even miss main
points entirely because they were looking around and the main point of a video was behind them.
On top of this the viewer may not even be able to watch the video. Many people report nausea when
watching videos in 360 degrees. If there is not a way to ensure people do not feel sick while
watching the videos, that means that this media will be limited by the number of people who are
able to tolerate it. Being able to create the quality of content that is currently available on 2–D
platforms may be difficult could also be an issue. Movie shoots require a lot of people and
equipment, which is all behind the camera when only shooting one perspective. In a 360–movie you
have to make sure you are capturing the things you want and nothing more. There is most likely
going to be more work creating

The Importance Of Diversity In Education
Describe an experience that has informed your understanding of how to negotiate differences
articulated in and through constructions of race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, nationality,
religion, ability, and/or class. What insights or strategies do you bring forward from this experience?
This past year, the Bryn Mawr School (BMS) in Baltimore was filled with conversations about
diversity and identity. It all started when BMS unveiled their new house system. Each house would
represent one of the founders. Teachers encouraged us to research about these pioneers in women's
history. However, members of the senior class uncovered a lot more than expected, and a few shared
their findings during their senior speeches. One girl talked about M. Carey Thomas' racist remarks
during one of her speeches in 1916 where she was praising white supremacy and was clearly
opposed having teachers of color. She said, "If the supremacy of the white race is maintained, as I
hope it will be...it is the only race to educate women...certain races have not intellect, government..."
This discovery raised questions about BMS' current stance on the topic and created a divide in the
upper school concerning who now saw these women as pioneers. Having been a peer educator for
the past 3 years, I helped lead some discussions about this topic. From this experience, I learned that
it is important to hear all sides of someone's argument. I found that some students would blatantly
ignore others if they attempted

They bring up a few facts of supplements and they bring up different examples of people taking
these supplements and it affected their bodies. But the main point of this text is that there are no

The third text, How food can improve your mental health shows the possible connection between

Emmy Noether was born on March 23, 1882 in Erlangen, Germany. Her real name is Amalie but she
was always called Emmy. She was the oldest of four children but one of only two that survived

wanted to study language. Her main focus was French and English. Around the time of her high

young women. At the age of 18, Emmy decided to take mathematic classes at the University of

contributions to mathematics, Emmy's legacy will always be remembered. In addition to research
and teaching, Noether helped to edit the Mathematische Annalen, a German mathematical journal
which covers a wide spectrum of modern mathematics. She was the focus of the strongest
mathematical activity at Gottingen. The length and significance of her work cannot be carefully
judged from her papers. Much of her work showed up in the publications of her students and
colleagues. Many times a suggestion or even a typical comment revealed her great insight and
encouraged another to complete and perfect some idea. Noether and many other professors were
dismissed in 1933 because the Nazis came to power at that time. Later, in a letter to the New York
Times, Albert Einstein wrote, "In judgement of the most competent living mathematicians, Fraulein
Noether was the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher
education of women began." For her contributions in Algebra, Physics, and common mathematics in
general, Emmy Noether's legacy will forever be remembered and carried on.

Aside from the techniques, skills, and rules I have learned from my experiences, I have also learned
how to handle the emotional side of healthcare. Being in a hospital can be a very sad place. In

experiences, I have been able to see these people get their lives back and overcome the illnesses. It
is these stories that light my fire to continue the path in the healthcare field. I believe I did very well

Don Trump Persuasive Speech
During the 2016 elections, I supported Trump. It all started that one day after Bernie Sanders
dropped out of the election. Everyone in school was talking about who they supported. I usually am
not afraid to speak my mind so I casually said, "If I could vote I would vote for Trump!" As soon as
those words escaped my mouth, I regretted it. Almost immediately based on this statement made by
me, everyone around started making assumptions about me. People made comments of "That's
racist!" and "So you are a bully and racist?" or "Oh nice joke!" I was just shocked. I never made
comments about the people the person they supported and I never judged them for it.
Right after the elections a fellow classmate came up to me and said "I hate you because Donald
Trump won. This really hurt my feelings.
My situation however wasn't as bad the one faced by Andi Moritz, a college student at Bryn Mawr.

Critique of “with No Boys to Ogle, We Had Time to Learn”...
A Critique of "With No Boys to Ogle, We Had Time to Learn" by Christine Flowers Schools are
divided into two categories around the world as we know: single–sex or mixed schools. While
mixed schools accept both males and females, single–sex schools accept students of a certain single
sex only. Both coed and single–sex schools have pros and cons, which nobody can deny. Some
studies, however, have shown that there is no particular benefit to single–sex education. The study
of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in 1998, for example, "found no
evidence to support single–sex education as better than coed education." (qtd. in Elizabeth). As a

Yet apart from helping students to accumulate academic knowledge, mixed schools also aid them to
enhance their social skills, particularly to promote their abilities to naturally communicate with
people of the opposite sex. Furthermore, males and females think differently because of different
brain structures; therefore, having the opposite sex in class will benefit the students since men and
women, with different perspectives, can exchange their ideas and learn from each other. All in all,
coed schools offer the students better education than single–sex schools, since coed schools help
develop their social and communication skills, which is an advantage that does not exist in single–
sex schools. In conclusion, while Christine Flowers is right about diverse benefits of single–sex
education, she is far too biased against coed education. With an appropriate and positive attitude
towards the opposite sex, attending a coed school is actually, in many ways, more beneficial than
going to a single–sex school. Indeed, an environment in which there are both males and females
offers the students a wonderful chance to get along with people of the opposite sex, share ideas
about academics and life, and thus improve both academic and social skills. Works Cited Elizabeth,

Federal Government. This study was written in 1887, which predates his presidency. It was
published in Political Science Quarterly. In his study, he created ideas that would directly
correspond to his programs and other attempts at federal power gains. Woodrow Wilson was only a
young man, only graduation eight years before his article was written. During the time it was

Without his beginning ideas, he would not of had a foundation for his plans to increase federal

constitution and is one of the many situations where the constitution is loosely interpreted. In the
first paragraph of Wilson's article, he says that the whole idea of his article is to "discover, first,
what government can properly and successfully do, and, secondly, how it can do these proper things
with the utmost possible efficiency and at the least possible cost either of money or of energy. On
both these points there is obviously much need of light among us; and only careful study can supply

Albert Einstein's Role In The Life Of Emmy Noether
Likened to Albert Einstein, Emmy Noether didn't care for her appearance and rather preferred to be
judged on her mental capabilities. She played a pivotal role in the creation of abstract algebra, as
well as a collaborator on multiple crucial cases one of which involved equipping a formula to Albert
Einstein's Theory of Relativity. She was eccentric at times, unkempt, didn't wear the traditional
clothing for a woman of her time, and above all else she was brilliant in a time when women's minds
were being suppressed (McGrayne 1993).
Noether was born on March 23, 1882 in Erlangen, Germany. She was born into a well–to–do family,
her mother was from a family of wholesale merchants and her father Max came from a family of
successful iron importers. Emmy was influenced at a young age by her father, who was the first of
his family to leave the field of importing iron in exchange for a career as a mathematician
(McGrayne 64–65). The older Emmy got, the more she took a liking to mathematics, however she it
was difficult for her to learn more about it due to how the world viewed women at the time. German
laws made it where girls were forced to learn about household management, elementary pedagogy
and child care. Women were meant to live in a domestic manner. She had to spend much of her life
waiting for german laws to liberalize. This meant that Emmy had to be creative when it came to
educational opportunities (McGrayne 68). She attended teacher's training programs, studied to

Joyce Meyer Reflection
I thought carefully of someone I wanted to write about. I decided on a woman who had a great part
in helping me through many tough times and helping me find my way to a God of my
understanding. Her name is Joyce Meyer and she is a Christian author and speaker from St. Louis,
Missouri. She is married, has four children, and is President of Joyce Meyer Ministries. I found her
book in a store one day and from there on I became more and more interested in what she had to say.
At the time I first found her book, I had just stopped drinking and entered a twelve–step program.
Coming to terms with a God of your own understanding is a big part of the twelve steps. I found her

Using "personal stories almost ensures the audience's interest. Everyone likes to hear a good story
(p.269)." Throughout her speeches, Joyce speaks of struggles she had gone through and those same
struggles are common to so many Christians, either many had faced them or were going through
them at that very moment she was describing them on stage.
Her ability to show that she is an equal by putting Biblical language into every day, common
language makes many people feel a bit more sense of belonging (P.69). Her demeanor and attitude is
one of friendliness and smiles. There is a sense of ease and comfort as if one were listening to a
friend talk. Her ability to not speak from a spiritual mountaintop unites people who know nothing
about the Bible to listen and comprehend as well as the person who has gone to Sunday school their
entire lives. It includes more people, but it also makes her feel more genuine as a listener.
Joyce describes her own feelings rather than evaluating others (P68). When she discusses a problem
or hardship, she takes ownership of an issue by using "I" statements frequently rather than
accusatory "you" statements. This avoids a defensive reaction from the audience. As our text states,
"no one likes to be judged or evaluated." "This approach leads to greater openness and trust because
the listener is less likely to feel rejected or as if the speaker is trying to control him or her (P.68)"
Joyce also uses "we" statements when discussing topics

Cervical Cancer: The Best Form of Prevention Is To Be...
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women and the leading cause of death
among women in underdeveloped countries. In fact, 500,000 cases are diagnosed each year
worldwide. This particular cancer is found mainly in middle–aged to older women; it is very rare to
find it in women age fifteen and younger. The average age of women with cervical cancer is age 50–
55; however, the cancer begins to appear in women in their twenties (2). It is also found in women
of lower–class areas, as they are not able to see a gynecologist to be screened. African American,
Hispanic, and Native American women are more prone to developing cervical cancer as well (1).
The cervix is an organ in the female reproductive system; it is the entrance ... Show more content on

Also, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) increases the likelihood of the precancerous cells
developing into cancer. This occurs because HIV weakens the immune system, and a woman with
HIV is unable to fight off HPV and precancerous abnormalities (2). Scientists have also found that
smokers are possibly twice as likely to develop cervical cancer. Cigarettes release many chemicals
that cause cancer (1). When a woman smokes a cigarette, these chemicals enter her bloodstream,
and they are carried to all parts of the body. These chemicals are also believed to damage the DNA
in cervical cells (2). Scientists are also examining the effects of Oral Contraceptives. No direct links
have been found, but there is some statistical evidence showing that women that have taken Oral
Contraceptives for over five years have a low risk of developing the cancer (2).
Often there are no symptoms while developing the cancer. For this reason, it is extremely important
for a woman to have an annual Pap smear test, as this is the only way to detect any kind of
abnormalities. The Pap smear evaluates the cells of the cervix under a microscope. It looks for three
signs: (a) inflammation of the cells, (b) the amount of estrogen in the cells and (c) the presence of
precancerous cells. The test is 90–95% accurate in finding an abnormality

Is My Team Plowing by A.E. Housman Essay
The "Afterlife"...a very curious subject that we as humans want to know about, we never want to
experience it but we wonder what it would be like. Me as an individual, I am fascinated by the
endless amount of ways life could be after death, if there even is life after death. Maybe one day you
have the gloomy ,and desirable curiosity questions floating in your head like, "do they miss me, or
have they moved on already?" In "Is my Team Plowing", by A.E. Housman, the emotional speaker
discusses how life goes on after death. The speaker, who is thought to be the friend of a dead man, is
guilty for moving on in life and having relations with his deceased friend's wife, so he is having a
moment of guilt in his head or else that's how I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
People will eventually be forgotten, and life will continue on earth for everyone else. The poem
structure is an eight stanza quatrain with a rhyme scheme of ABCB. "Is football playing / Along the
river shore, / With lads to chase the leather, / Now I stand up no more?" (Housman 9–12). Each
stanza alternates between questions from the dead man and answers from his friend. Stanzas that are
quoted represent the dead man's questions. The stanzas without quotations are responses from the
friend who is alive. Each stanza is significant because it reveals a little background of some of the
things the dead man participated in. The speaker of the poem is a matter of opinion and how you
look at things. One outcome is that it's the dead man literally talking to his friend in some way and
they are discussing life. The second thought is that the friend is having internal conflict with himself
with the fact that he got with the dead man's wife. "The purpose is to communicate emotionally a
certain truth about human life; life goes on after our deaths. Very similar to the way life was before
your death.
It also emphasizes the humans sense of betray and guilt that may follow after the death of a friend."
(Arp and Johnson 687). "Yes, lad, I lie easy, / I lie as lads would choose; / I cheer a dead man's
sweetheart, / Never ask me whose." (Housman 29–32). The irony of the story that you catch on at

Tribe, described by the dictionary as, "Any aggregate of people united by ties of descent from a
common ancestor, community of customs and traditions", can cause many people to often tumble
into disagreement with one another over the meaning of this word. Arguments have lead people to
believe that the word tribe refers to a group of people that are primitive and savage, but
Archeologists have cleaned up the meaning. Archaeologists define the word tribe as, "A political
group that comprises several bands or lineage groups, each with similar language and lifestyle and
each occupying a distinct territory" (Keim, pg. 114). The word "tribe" not only applies to the Native
Americans as one would think. Tribe can be a label applied to any specific ... Show more content on

Each player in the team may have separate backgrounds, but when united they all believe in a few
things. The team itself believes that they always need to be focused and always need to show up
with intensity whether they have a practice or a game. The Venom, were a newly created soccer
team in 2014 by coach Steve Baron. They understand their world as a place to get better, and a place
to compete. Every single kid on the team understands the other teams as enemies that they need to
concor. Each child has a different life story about how they became the person they were. For
example, some kids were born in Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia, and some kids were born in Trinidad
and Tobago. The kids come from many different backgrounds, but all unite because they understand
the world the same. Alike the Native Americans and African tribes, the Venom perform the same
rituals before each game and practice. They eat the same foods, always healthy, and they get
themselves loose in the same way each time. They always eat healthy foods like salads, fruits, and
vegetables but they never eat something that could weight them down like junk food. Before each
game, the team performs the same warm–up, they jog, they spring, they do high–knees, etc. These
rituals before a game never change, similar to how the Native Americans rituals never change.
Because many of the members come from different backgrounds, there is a stern difference between
how they differentiate themselves. Many kids show up to practices in clothes that they wear on a
daily basis, so for some people, that's different. Kids show up in jackets, shorts, gloves, hats, jerseys,
anything under the sun. The catch is that they are always unique, the outfits are never similar to the
others. Although we all share the same interests, we all differentiate from another because of our
styles of life. In 2014, the team was created,

their price is not as competitive as others, which result in a loss in profit.
Problem:
In response to the profitability downturn, Tweeter began to carry more variety of products and
joined the Progressive Retailers Organization in 1988. Unfortunately, public's perception toward
Tweeter remained unchanged. "Customers continued to view Tweeter as more specialized and more
expensive than Lechmere and the other New England retailers". In order to turn the profit around,
the Tweeter's management team came up with the new strategy on 1993 to restore price credibility at
Tweeter. The main emphasis in their new strategy is "Automatic Price Protection", APP. The
objective of APP is to make sure customers are receiving the best price on an given product. "In its
typical form, if a consumer purchased a product at one store and later found it for a lower price at
another store, the consumer could return to the first store with proof of that lower price and get
reimbursed for the difference". Later on "Tweeter took it upon itself to track the local newspapers
and send out rebates. If a consumer purchased an item at Tweeter and it was advertised for less in a
major local newspaper within 30 days, Tweeter automatically mailed that consumer a check for the
difference." Tweeter's shift in strategy was very effective and had a positive effect on financial

Compare And Contrast Nike And Under Armour
At some point in one's life, he or she gets introduced to sports which have become a staple in society
around the world. For example, most countries have a national team for different sports such as
soccer, volleyball, and baseball. There are many companies like Addis, Reebok, and Asics that
produce sportswear for every sport imaginable. Two of the biggest sportswear companies are Nike
and Under Armour. Athletes and non–athletes all over the world use Nike and Under Armour
products every day.
Nike makes commercials that show the products, but also make the athlete wearing the products the
key point in the commercial. In Nike's commercial from February, 2017, sports are shown from a
different perspective. Nike shows professional athletes as well as everyday people. The commercial
says that in between the lines of a field or court one is distinct from his or her actions, not by his or
her religion, looks, or where he or she lives. The commercial shows the different places people can
play sports. For example, two young kids are shown playing basketball on the sidewalk outside of
their church. About halfway through the commercial different people of all ages are spray painting
lines everywhere to show that people should be treated with the same respect he or she receives
when he or she is on the field or court. Nike made the entire commercial in black and white. The
main point Nike made was that race does not matter, it is all about how one plays the game.

How Did Hilda Doolittle As An Emagist Writer?
Along with the National geographic society being founded, 1888 was also the year Hilda Doolittle
was born in Bethlehem Pennsylvania. This soon to be Imagist writer was known mainly for her
poems. What differentiated her from most other Imagists at the time was her identity a female and
bisexual which both at the time were severely oppressed. Along with the political stance, Hilda
Doolittle also faced struggles growing up due to being only daughter in her family and her father
being a science professor (Hernandez). These conflicts however did not affect her ability to write
but are prominent in her writing. Her childhood and the relationships cause her to evolve into an
imagist writer by shaping the way she thought of herself and expressing through her writing. Hilda
Doolittle's lifestyle and relationship with her family shaped her thinking. Hilda's mother was a

the more he explained, the less she understood (Hilda). He wanted her to be the next Marie Curie

setting centers around the USS Indianapolis. For short she is referred to as the Indy. The ship is 133

Vigo Zéro De Conduit Essay
Vigo: Zéro de conduit is a movie running for 47 minutes focusing on an educational crisis in France.
It is viewed as controversial for its depiction of the educational system. It focuses on boys who are
generally fed up with their overzealous and repressive teachers. Colin (Gilbert Pruchon) is the
student who with his friend Louis Lefebvre (known as Caussat in the movie) and their classmates
are totally certain that their school is in for something fishy, something like a strike, boycott or
shindig as it can be called. They have no objection and become a part of the project. The main
reason of their actions is that they are totally frustrated and annoyed by the idea of being punished
by their teachers. Therefore, the belief that the optimal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In my opinion, whoever imposed the rules had insufficient level of communication skills. It was not
supposed to be the way the students should be thinking. It is reasonable to example what could have
been done in this context. It was, therefore, the responsibility of the school to indulge the children in
a one–on–one session where the issues related to the rules and the students' attitude towards these
rules could be revised. It had never happened. The results turned out negative. The students were

"Adieu." Pictures of the gorgeous girl, a jar with starfish in it, settings of the city, newsprints,
tugboats emerge. "How beautiful she is." Recurrently. He retreats upstairs holding a knife in his
hand, starfish on the step. "How beautiful she was." "How beautiful she

Women From 1850 To 1950 Essay

  • 1. Women From 1850 To 1950 Essay Gender roles, societal expectations and gainful employment for women in America were quite limited prior to the early 1800s. By 1850 we can see that doors were opening little by little due to subtle changes in attitudes and the needs of our emerging industrialized nation. Many upper middle class women were concerned with more than domesticity. They were felt that a woman was more than a wife and mother only concerned with her home and family. Between 1850 and 1950 the three most important changes for women were political voice due to the women's suffrage movement, expanded access to education, and rich, educated women leading the way to social reforms. Prior to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, women were powerless to make important political decisions. They could not cast their vote and therefore held no political power to make changes in policies or laws. A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In 1890 Jane Addams brought to America the "settlement" project movement she had seen in Europe on an extended vacation after college. She founded Hull House, a "settlement house" dedicated to help poor immigrant women and children in Chicago. She and her like–minded college graduate friends would live and work in the huge mansion offering everything for free. The would hold classes to provide skills, political lessons, free lectures, art exhibits and even started kindergarten for the children among many things. Addams and Kelly would campaign for child labor laws and maximum work week for the women as well. The "settlement house" movement would spread to other cities. This move to provide charity was before there was any government social welfare. The immigrants benefitted from these programs but so did the young women volunteering. The volunteers would learn how to relate to cultural difference, how to successfully get laws to protect the vulnerable and become more open–minded than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Tuition Increase Affected Enrollment Rate Table of Contents Introduction 3 Background 4 Analysis 5 Factors 6 Recommendation 7 Conclusion 8 References 9 Introduction In 2000, the Board of Ursinus College, raised its tuition from $19,331 to $23,460. This turned out to be a 17.6% increase. Surprisingly, the tuition increase proved to be a positive change for Ursinus College. The college received more than 200 applicants than its previous year (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Other regional institutions such as University of Notre Dame, Bryn Mawr College and Rice University also experienced a similar trend once they increased their tuition rates (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). The president of Ursinus College deduced that the tuition increase affected enrollment rate (increased enrollment). She simply stated that "people don't want cheap" (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Today, Susan Hansen, Admissions Director of East Liberal Arts College, wishes to increase tuition and reduce financial aid available to students (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). Moreover, she has expressed that "increasing tuition and reducing the amount of financial aid will solve the schools financial problems" (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, 2009, p. 110). This will be done by "increasing an effective tuition from $15,000 to $25,000" (Brickley et al., 2009). She also projects that the tuition increase enrollment from 400 to 600 students (Brickley, Smith and Zimmerman, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Everyday Use By Alice Walker Analysis Heritage is something that is defined as who you are and where you came from, it's a practice that has been handed down by the past tradition(s). After reading this story, there will be realization how much it's being used in this story. The Author herself involves the difference of how each character shows how they represent and act when it comes to their traits. What I want to prove in "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker is the two viewpoints of heritage, the characterization, the setting, and the imagery. Walker describes how the house they lived in "This last house, owned by and symbolic of Wangero, embodies also the cultural problem" (Cowart 60). "It is three rooms, just like the one that burned, except the roof is tin; they don't make shingle roofs any more. There are no real windows, just some holes cut in the sides, like the portholes in a ship, but not round and not square, with rawhide holding the shutters up on the outside. This house is in a pasture, too, like the other one". (Walker p14)" Mama prefers the yard to the confining house, where the muggy air fails to circulate freely. The outdoors is a place of freedom, whereas the interior of the house offers restraint and discomfort." (Spark notes 4) Dee could never accept the fact that they lived in such and awful house, that she would do any possible thing to ruin it, and by that she will even willing burn their first house down. Wherever they would live next she wouldn't mind staying, but she made it clear ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. Story Of An Hour Analysis In her article Kate Chopin's View on Death and Freedom in The Story of an Hour, Xuemei Wan proposes that Kate Chopin The Story of an Hour expresses birth and death, psychology of Mrs. Mallard, and freedom. The Story of an Hour written by the American woman writer, Kate Chopin (1851–1904) fully shows us the tremendous conflict between life and death among those women who had more self–awareness. Who had less social living space according to the established social norms 100 years ago in a dramatic way. The heroine's strong desire for freedom and sudden death. This reminds us of the philosophical thought on life and death of Zhuangzi, ancient Chinese thinker, Martin Heidegger, which deconstruct and transcend the conflict between them, and many more. In this essay, I will be critiquing Xuemei Wen article showing the strengths, weaknesses, and notable features. To me Wen showed some ideas in which I think are strongly valid in this article. For example, Wen wrote" This astonishing story strongly indicates that how deeply Mrs. Mallard desired her own freedom, but there was a conflict between her life and death. She had her own contemplation about life such as love, marriage, and freedom, but it was not an appropriate thing over hundred years ago for a lady to have her own ideas against the established ones." I feel that Wen pointed this out because some readers are focused solely on the main point of grief that they forget the secondary strain of feminism at that time. Another valid point she made is when she wrote "Her sister, Josephine, reminded us of her conventional thought that women should attach themselves to their husbands." Wen explained this part of the story better than the story itself in my opinion. Then, there were some points that I felt were not well supported in this article. Wen wrote about Zhuang Zi philosophy that I felt really did not add to the article and could have been left out. She wrote only three lines that were valid to me. She wrote "Zhuang Zi was adamant in declining an offer, and would rather be an orphaned piglet, saying, "I would rather play in a muddy ditch and be happy than be fettered by the state" (Yao–yu, 1991, p. 79). We have different styles of media, different ways to view media, and so many different options when it comes to creating media. A recent technology that has started to gain traction is 360–degree photography. This new technology allows people to view more than traditional 2–D perspective. With this new way of being able to capture a scene comes many affordances and constraints. Being able to capture everything around you, then allow another person to experience entirely the same scene is something that has never been able to be done before. The technology for 360–degree photography is most likely early in its development. That being ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Having devices that allow us to put on a headpiece and be put into another reality is a huge step for media. With these devices, unfortunately, come many constraints. The content creator has more options for what the viewer can see, but at the same time it may not be what they want the viewer to see. In most forms of media today there is a main point that the viewer is observing. 2–D perspective video creators are able to change perspectives of how the viewer sees the media, but with 360 degrees the viewer may not see it in the same way the original creator intended. The viewer may even miss main points entirely because they were looking around and the main point of a video was behind them. On top of this the viewer may not even be able to watch the video. Many people report nausea when watching videos in 360 degrees. If there is not a way to ensure people do not feel sick while watching the videos, that means that this media will be limited by the number of people who are able to tolerate it. Being able to create the quality of content that is currently available on 2–D platforms may be difficult could also be an issue. Movie shoots require a lot of people and equipment, which is all behind the camera when only shooting one perspective. In a 360–movie you have to make sure you are capturing the things you want and nothing more. There is most likely going to be more work creating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. The Importance Of Diversity In Education Describe an experience that has informed your understanding of how to negotiate differences articulated in and through constructions of race, culture, gender, sexual orientation, nationality, religion, ability, and/or class. What insights or strategies do you bring forward from this experience? This past year, the Bryn Mawr School (BMS) in Baltimore was filled with conversations about diversity and identity. It all started when BMS unveiled their new house system. Each house would represent one of the founders. Teachers encouraged us to research about these pioneers in women's history. However, members of the senior class uncovered a lot more than expected, and a few shared their findings during their senior speeches. One girl talked about M. Carey Thomas' racist remarks during one of her speeches in 1916 where she was praising white supremacy and was clearly opposed having teachers of color. She said, "If the supremacy of the white race is maintained, as I hope it will be...it is the only race to educate women...certain races have not intellect, government..." This discovery raised questions about BMS' current stance on the topic and created a divide in the upper school concerning who now saw these women as pioneers. Having been a peer educator for the past 3 years, I helped lead some discussions about this topic. From this experience, I learned that it is important to hear all sides of someone's argument. I found that some students would blatantly ignore others if they attempted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Around the time of her high school graduation, she passed a test that allowed her to teach those two languages at schools for young women. In addition to research and teaching, Noether helped to edit the Mathematische Annalen, a German mathematical journal which covers a wide spectrum of modern mathematics. She was the focus of the strongest mathematical activity at Gottingen. The length and significance of her work cannot be carefully judged from her papers. Many times a suggestion or even a typical comment revealed her great insight and encouraged another to complete and perfect some idea. Noether and many other professors were dismissed in 1933 because the Nazis came to power at that time. Later, in a letter to the New York Times, Albert Einstein wrote, "In judgement of the most competent living mathematicians, Fraulein Noether was the most significant creative mathematical genius thus far produced since the higher education of women began." As soon as those words escaped my mouth, I regretted it. Almost immediately based on this statement made by me, everyone around started making assumptions about me. A Critique of "With No Boys to Ogle, We Had Time to Learn" by Christine Flowers Schools are divided into two categories around the world as we know: single–sex or mixed schools. While mixed schools accept both males and females, single–sex schools accept students of a certain single sex only. Both coed and single–sex schools have pros and cons, which nobody can deny. Some studies, however, have shown that there is no particular benefit to single–sex education. The study of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) in 1998, for example, "found no evidence to support single–sex education as better than coed education." (qtd. in Elizabeth). Yet apart from helping students to accumulate academic knowledge, mixed schools also aid them to enhance their social skills, particularly to promote their abilities to naturally communicate with people of the opposite sex. Furthermore, males and females think differently because of different brain structures; therefore, having the opposite sex in class will benefit the students since men and women, with different perspectives, can exchange their ideas and learn from each other. All in all, coed schools offer the students better education than single–sex schools, since coed schools help develop their social and communication skills, which is an advantage that does not exist in single– sex schools. In conclusion, while Christine Flowers is right about diverse benefits of single–sex education, she is far too biased against coed education. With an appropriate and positive attitude towards the opposite sex, attending a coed school is actually, in many ways, more beneficial than going to a single–sex school. Indeed, an environment in which there are both males and females offers the students a wonderful chance to get along with people of the opposite sex, share ideas about academics and life, and thus improve both academic and social skills. • 37. Albert Einstein's Role In The Life Of Emmy Noether Likened to Albert Einstein, Emmy Noether didn't care for her appearance and rather preferred to be judged on her mental capabilities. She played a pivotal role in the creation of abstract algebra, as well as a collaborator on multiple crucial cases one of which involved equipping a formula to Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity. She was eccentric at times, unkempt, didn't wear the traditional clothing for a woman of her time, and above all else she was brilliant in a time when women's minds were being suppressed (McGrayne 1993). Noether was born on March 23, 1882 in Erlangen, Germany. She was born into a well–to–do family, her mother was from a family of wholesale merchants and her father Max came from a family of successful iron importers. Emmy was influenced at a young age by her father, who was the first of his family to leave the field of importing iron in exchange for a career as a mathematician (McGrayne 64–65). The older Emmy got, the more she took a liking to mathematics, however she it was difficult for her to learn more about it due to how the world viewed women at the time. German laws made it where girls were forced to learn about household management, elementary pedagogy and child care. Women were meant to live in a domestic manner. • 39. Joyce Meyer Reflection I thought carefully of someone I wanted to write about. I decided on a woman who had a great part in helping me through many tough times and helping me find my way to a God of my understanding. Her name is Joyce Meyer and she is a Christian author and speaker from St. Louis, Missouri. She is married, has four children, and is President of Joyce Meyer Ministries. I found her book in a store one day and from there on I became more and more interested in what she had to say. At the time I first found her book, I had just stopped drinking and entered a twelve–step program. Coming to terms with a God of your own understanding is a big part of the twelve steps. Everyone likes to hear a good story (p.269)." Throughout her speeches, Joyce speaks of struggles she had gone through and those same struggles are common to so many Christians, either many had faced them or were going through them at that very moment she was describing them on stage. Her ability to show that she is an equal by putting Biblical language into every day, common language makes many people feel a bit more sense of belonging (P.69). Her demeanor and attitude is one of friendliness and smiles. There is a sense of ease and comfort as if one were listening to a friend talk. Her ability to not speak from a spiritual mountaintop unites people who know nothing about the Bible to listen and comprehend as well as the person who has gone to Sunday school their entire lives. It includes more people, but it also makes her feel more genuine as a listener. Joyce describes her own feelings rather than evaluating others (P68). When she discusses a problem or hardship, she takes ownership of an issue by using "I" statements frequently rather than accusatory "you" statements. This avoids a defensive reaction from the audience. As our text states, "no one likes to be judged or evaluated." "This approach leads to greater openness and trust because the listener is less likely to feel rejected or as if the speaker is trying to control him or her (P.68)" Joyce also uses "we" statements when discussing topics ... • 41. Cervical Cancer: The Best Form of Prevention Is To Be... Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women and the leading cause of death among women in underdeveloped countries. In fact, 500,000 cases are diagnosed each year worldwide. This particular cancer is found mainly in middle–aged to older women; it is very rare to find it in women age fifteen and younger. The average age of women with cervical cancer is age 50– 55; however, the cancer begins to appear in women in their twenties (2). It is also found in women of lower–class areas, as they are not able to see a gynecologist to be screened. African American, Hispanic, and Native American women are more prone to developing cervical cancer as well (1). The cervix is an organ in the female reproductive system; it is the entrance ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Also, Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) increases the likelihood of the precancerous cells developing into cancer. This occurs because HIV weakens the immune system, and a woman with HIV is unable to fight off HPV and precancerous abnormalities (2). Scientists have also found that smokers are possibly twice as likely to develop cervical cancer. Cigarettes release many chemicals that cause cancer (1). When a woman smokes a cigarette, these chemicals enter her bloodstream, and they are carried to all parts of the body. These chemicals are also believed to damage the DNA in cervical cells (2). Scientists are also examining the effects of Oral Contraceptives. No direct links have been found, but there is some statistical evidence showing that women that have taken Oral Contraceptives for over five years have a low risk of developing the cancer (2). Often there are no symptoms while developing the cancer. For this reason, it is extremely important for a woman to have an annual Pap smear test, as this is the only way to detect any kind of abnormalities. The Pap smear evaluates the cells of the cervix under a microscope. It looks for three signs: (a) inflammation of the cells, (b) the amount of estrogen in the cells and (c) the presence of precancerous cells. The test is 90–95% accurate in finding an abnormality ... Me as an individual, I am fascinated by the endless amount of ways life could be after death, if there even is life after death. Maybe one day you have the gloomy ,and desirable curiosity questions floating in your head like, "do they miss me, or have they moved on already?" In "Is my Team Plowing", by A.E. Housman, the emotional speaker discusses how life goes on after death. The speaker, who is thought to be the friend of a dead man, is guilty for moving on in life and having relations with his deceased friend's wife, so he is having a moment of guilt in his head or else that's how I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... People will eventually be forgotten, and life will continue on earth for everyone else. The poem structure is an eight stanza quatrain with a rhyme scheme of ABCB. "Is football playing / Along the river shore, / With lads to chase the leather, / Now I stand up no more?" (Housman 9–12). Each stanza alternates between questions from the dead man and answers from his friend. Stanzas that are quoted represent the dead man's questions. The stanzas without quotations are responses from the friend who is alive. Each stanza is significant because it reveals a little background of some of the things the dead man participated in. The speaker of the poem is a matter of opinion and how you look at things. One outcome is that it's the dead man literally talking to his friend in some way and they are discussing life. The second thought is that the friend is having internal conflict with himself with the fact that he got with the dead man's wife. "The purpose is to communicate emotionally a certain truth about human life; life goes on after our deaths. Very similar to the way life was before your death. It also emphasizes the humans sense of betray and guilt that may follow after the death of a friend." (Arp and Johnson 687). "Yes, lad, I lie easy, / I lie as lads would choose; / I cheer a dead man's sweetheart, / Never ask me whose." (Housman 29–32). For example, some kids were born in Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia, and some kids were born in Trinidad and Tobago. The kids come from many different backgrounds, but all unite because they understand the world the same. Alike the Native Americans and African tribes, the Venom perform the same rituals before each game and practice. They eat the same foods, always healthy, and they get themselves loose in the same way each time. They always eat healthy foods like salads, fruits, and vegetables but they never eat something that could weight them down like junk food. Before each game, the team performs the same warm–up, they jog, they spring, they do high–knees, etc. These rituals before a game never change, similar to how the Native Americans rituals never change.
