• Sam starts out as a very young, curious manatee. He can’t get along without his mother. At his mother’s side, Sam slowly learns the ways of a sea cow. One day, Sam gets hit by a motorboat! Sam gets cut and nearly drowns, but his mother saves him. When he thinks he has finally learned enough, Sam leaves his mother to live on his own.
• After Sam has left his mother, he explores many places. He swims around wooden docks. He floats by other manatees. He squeezes his large body through tight places. One day when Sam is exploring, he squeezes his body into a large, cement sewer drain. He pushes with his flippers and flaps his tail. Sam is stuck! Children watch. People try to help Sam, but they can’t get him out! The people call service men. They finally get Sam out of the pipe.
• Sam is taken to an aquarium. No one comes to see Sam. They watch the whales and sea lions, but not Sam. Sam can’t do any tricks. Sam is very depressed. He gets taken back to the ocean where he lives the rest of his life.
