About The Author Eric Carle was born in Syracuse, New York in 1929 His family moved to Germany when he was 6 years old He graduated from Akademie der bildenden Künste At 23 he moved back to New York and got a job with The New York Times His first book was 1,2,3 to the Zoo Soon after that book was published he wrote The Very Hungry Caterpillar
The Beginning One day there was an egg on a leaf and the next morning it hatched. Out came a tiny, hungry caterpillar. All it wanted to do was eat so it could get big and strong. Over the course of a week it ate EVERYTGHING.
The Middle As the week went on and on he just kept eating. He ate apples, pears, plums, strawberries, and oranges the first day. They next day he ate junk food. He ate cake, ice-cream, a pickle, Swiss cheese, salami, a lollipop, a cherry pie, a sausage, a cupcake and a watermelon. That night he had a terrible stomachache.
The Ending It was Sunday again and he had a big green leaf for his stomachache. He was a big, fat caterpillar now from eating all of that food. Then he built a small home called a cocoon and he stayed inside of it for two weeks. As two weeks went by it was time for him to come out. He chewed a hole and he popped out as a BEAUTIFUL BUTTERFLY!
