  3. 3. Dear Friends Lady General Managers in hospitality industry are few and in this issue we have focused on two lady General Managers — one based in Hamburg — Madeleine Marx, GM, Scandic Hamburg Emporio hotel and the other based in New Delhi - Pooja Patti, General Manager, Svelte Hotel & Personal Suites. Both have been very successfiil in their fields and have systematically risen up in the ranks. Both hotels are based in mixed complex use and the General Managers have taken this advantage to make their hotels a success. I was surprised to know that Madeleine Marx knew a bit of Hindi language. She then enlightened me that in her college she had an Indian friend and loves India. She took me on a tour of the property. Its a modem and trendy hotel with truly spacious rooms (a problem often faced in Germany) with a big bed, a couch and a desk. Being centrally located the hotel location is an advantage (Right outside is the U-station) as its lot closer to most key areas of - Hamburg. Located in center of New Delhi is Svelte Hotel & Personal Suites, Delhi’s very own all suites hotel. Svelte Hotel is located in Saket (a well established business and entertainment district of Delhi) surrounded by three malls including the Select City Walk mall. Being an all suite hotel it has the largest room sizes in comparison to some of the most luxurious hotels in Delhi. The hotel offers 81 luxurious suites that are custom-made to cater the needs of business and leisure travelers. In our cover story we have focused on Alila Hotels in Bali. The name Alila comes from Sanskrit meaning ‘surprise’ and truly the group focuses on creating a unique lifestyle and destination experience. This I was able to personally experience in Bali after visiting four of their resorts — each different in its style, structure and location. But all catering to guests who want to relax and seeking tranquility. While Alila Hotels & Resorts has four properties in Bali - Alila Ubud, Alila Manggis, Alila Villas Soori and Alila Villas Uluwatu, in this issue we have covered Alila Ubud and Alila Villas Soori. Alila Ubud is located right in the middle of a jungle with greenery all around. The restaurant as well as the main pool are looking over a valley giving guests a wonderful View of the valley, mountains, forest along with the sounds of birds and monkeys. On the other hand Alila Villas Soori is a beach front property with extremely luxurious villas. Designed by internationally renowned Singapore-based SCDA Architects, Alila Villas Soori is an inspired expression of contemporary Asian architecture that blends seamlessly into the rice fields and coastline. The resort features 15 Beach Pool Villas, 15 Ocean Pool Villas, 8 Terrace Pool Villas, 8 Three-Bedroom Pool Villas, 1 Five-Bedroom Pool Villa and 1 Ten-Bedroom Pool Villa. Its truly a setting setting for beachfront living. The worldwide exhibition for incentive travel, meeting and events, IMEX Frankfurt 2015 is again expected to attract over 8000 professionals from across the globe. Visitors get an opportunity to choose and interact from 3,500 exhibitors from over 150 countries spread across 18,000 square metre. This year the keynote address at the opening ceremony of IMEX will be delivered by Bill McDermott, CEO of SAP one of the world’s largest business software company. Bill McDermott believes passionately in the value and effectiveness of meetings as a means to drive business growth and profit. We have previewed this all important MICE event. The seventh edition of the Hotel Investment Forum India (HIFI) was able to attract over 350 delegates from the hospitality and tourism sector. Being the countries most important hotel investment conference its tuming out to be the right platform to deliberate, network, update oneself on the latest trends and also seek new opportunities. HIFI is hosted by Burba Hotel Network (BHN) and Horwath HTL. We reviewed this event. Editor - Chandragupta Amritkar, Managing Editor - Chandra Talware, Design - Manoj Durgam l. 1 I’ l ' ‘ , . -. Alila Resorts, Bali worth escaping with the family manages boutique luxury hotels and resorts in the Asia Pacific region including India (Unfortunately many Indi- ans including some travel agents are not aware that the brand is having properties outside India and four of them in Bali alone). My awareness about the brand started when Julian Ayers, Regional VP India & Middle East, Alila Hotels & Resorts invited me to an event of the group in Mumbai. At that time I had the pleasure of interacting with Frederic Simon, CEO, Alila Hotels and Resorts, Doris Goh, VP Sales & Marketing, Alila Hotels and Resorts and Sean Brennan, Regional VP South East Asia, Alila Hotels and Resorts. Appreciating my publication and the story done on Hard Rock Hotel, Bali, Sean Brennan invited me to visit Bali and cover Alila properties too. He mentioned they had four properties and a lux- ury cruise liner. Visiting their website I was pretty impressed by the Bali properties and decided that I will visit them. We set a date, a year later and a schedule was worked out so that I will be able to visit all the 4 properties. Arriving into Bali in the afternoon, as usual the immigration was quick (only the visa fees had increased to $35) and I was picked up by the Alila vehicle. My first stop was Alila Ubud. The resort is located 45 kms from Ngurah Rai Intemational Airport and it took us 1.5 hours to reach. Though a scenic joumey, it can The Singapore based Alila brand is on the growth path. They were kind enough to give me a pool villa which was quite spacious approximately 1200 sqft, with a beautiful landscaped gardens and a large private swimming pool that I could see from my bed. It also had a spacious bedroom with indoor shower and outdoor bathtub. For dinner I proceeded to the restaurant -The Plantation restau- rant. It has a fine selection of Alila Ubud’s signature seasonal cocktails and Bellini’s, infused vodka’s, Araks and syrups made in-house from the best produce. During dinner I tried the straw- berry juice(which was really good but in the morning for break- fast when I ordered the same it tasted very different. When queried they explained that this had come from the kitchen and the one had for dinner was from the bar. So please try it from the bar and not kitchen). Getting up early in the moming I could soak in the beauty of the resort. The resort can be termed as a hillside retreat on the edge of the rich green Ayung River valley. Blending contempo- rary design and traditional Balinese architecture the resort with secluded courtyards, spacious terraces and private gardens looks beautiful. Over breakfast I caught up with Alasdair Davidson, Hotel Man- ager, Alila Ubud who was earlier looking after Alila Goa in India. Over breakfast we discussed about his good experiences in India and the guests who came and enjoyed Alil hospitality. "I know Indians if they want to they can be heavy spenders. I am certain- ly looking forward for them (Indians) to come to my resort. The breakfast options were great and I loved the . idea to choose from a menu rather than the tradi- i tional buffet style. They have different menus everyday and some healthy options too. , After breakfast we went on a tour of the resort. 15. 15. Sama Sama: A Perfect transit hote hen I was invited to Bali as well as Hong Kong, I ‘ decided to use this opportunity to experience an airport transit hotel for the first time. Flying Malaysian air- lines, I decided to arrive into Kuala Lumpur airport in the night and catch the morning flight to Hong Kong. Keeping this in mind I e-mailed Rohanna Ibrahim, DoSM, Sama-Sama Hotel, KLIA who in turn connected me to Kellyn On, Mar Com Manager, Sama-Sama Hotel, KLIA. Got an immediate reply that they will be delighted to host me. Though unfortunate- 1y I did not have the pleasure of meeting Kellyn On, I was able to interact with Iqmal, Manager at Sama Sama Express KLIA. When I arrived from Bali at 10.30 pm, I was surprised to see two girls from Sama Sama hotel with my board. As it was a tran- sit hotel and having noticed directions to reach the hotel when I went to Bali, I was a bit surprised. The girls clarified that the flight had landed at a different terminal and since we had to take the aerotrain between the terminals and 1 don’t become anxious or have difficulty in reaching the hotel they decided to receive me. I was impressed — pretty impressed. This is what I could call service in hospitality industry. Located in the satellite building of the KL Intemational Airport adjacent to Gate C5 Sama Sama Express KL International Airport is an ideal place for transit passengers seek a few hours of respite and quietness before catching their connecting flight. The best part is you get a nice room to rest without the hassle of obtaining a visa (and using another page of your passport — each page counts for frequent travelers), going through immigration and then waiting for the hotel shuttle/ taxi just to get into a bed. But do remember that the airside transit hotel is only for guests on tran- sit to another flight and are required to produce the boarding pass of their next flight upon check—in. The check in was fast and efficient and as expected the staff were friendly. The room was excellent and I had a great view of the runways. I had a stationary airplane facing my window — just a few meters May — June 2015 away. The room was spacious with a comfortable double bed, mini bar, complementary tea and water, AC and a set of fresh shower towels. They have complimentary wifi throughout the hotel and I was able to update both my spouse and parents. After checking and replying to my e-mails I got ready for a decent sleep. Even though it‘s right in the airport (and aircrafts do make sufficient noise) my room was quiet and I had a good night sleep. The Sama Sama Express offers 80 sleek, modem rooms and suites - Queen and Twin accommodations are available along with one inclusive suite. Each has been remodeled to provide guests with contemporary comfort with a workspace. Satellite TV programming provides an extensive menu of choices, with glob- al news, sports, movies, and children’s channels. The rooms are rented by hourly basis with a minimum stay 6 hours. The hotel also has round the clock Business Facilities. After a good nights sleep I went to the lounge. For those who don’t want a room or have a few hours of transit the Sama-Sama Express Lounge is ideal — costing around USD 10 - it includes a buffet meal, shower plus complimentary Wifi and Internet facili- ties. The lounge has arm chairs, colorful bean bags and an HD TV. In the morning while talking to one of the guests on his expe- rience he said, “I have a long 10hr wait and so I booked the room for 6hrs. Let me tell you to have a shower and freshen up in your our own special room before a 10 hour flight is worth the amount you spend. It has certainly refreshed me for my flight back home. It's a great way to relax in-between flights. ” It’s advisable to book online before arrival as you get an assured room as well as a nice online discount. On arrival also you can visit and get a room, if available. The costing is USD 60 onwards for 6 hours. I personally feel that airport hotels are made for very practical purposes - very suitable for passengers who not only want to rest but also for the workaholics/ businessmen who would like to have a spacious quiet room to finish off the work instead of a business lounge. Infact an interesting comment by a guest caught my attention, “If I have to pay would prefer to have a room to myself than rest in a business lounge with lots of noise — from movement of tables and cutlery and with plenty of new faces — unable to concentrate on my working zone - a laptop. ” It is a very good option if you have a long stopover or if your flight gets delayed. 18. 18. Ilosilitaliui “We women should be (and are) very capable GMs” a good idea to visit Hamburg and experience Scandic Ham- burg Emporio hotel. One of the main reasons being it had a lady GM and I wanted to know the industry from a ladies point of view. I e-mailed her and they were kind enough to host me for 2 nights. Arriving into Hamburg the immigration was quick and the taxi took 20 minutes to reach the hotel. As I stepped out of the taxi the hotel looked majestic from outside and would notice that it is located in a mixed use complex. On arrival my check in was quick and I was given a very spa- cious room. When I meet the GM, Madeleine Marx, I was sur- prised to know that she knew a bit of Hindi language. She then enlightened me that in her college she had an Indian friend and loves India. She took me on a tour of the property. Its a modem and trendy hotel with truly spacious rooms (a problem often faced in Germany) with a big bed, a couch and a desk. Yes the bathroom was a bit smaller than I expected compared to the size of the room. One of the rooms had an Indian touch with a huge painting with Hindi words. The onsite hotel restaurant H2O has both regional as well as Intemational cuisine. The breakfast spread was excellent and though being a vegetarian found my choice dishes tasty and deli- cious. Just adjacent to the restaurant is the Bar & Lounge H20. For the MICE segment the hotel offers excellent facilities for 100 people. Guests can have access to free wifi (which was reason- ably fast) as well as the hotel's gym and saunas. The gym is quite modem with most necessary equipments. The hotel has 2 sepa- rate saunas, one for women only and one mixed. The hotel is also very eco—friendly. Being centrally located the hotel location is an advantage (Right outside is the U-station) as its lot closer to most key areas of Hamburg. In spite of the cold I had a nice 2 hour walk visiting the nearby tourist attractions. It was when I was invited to cover ITB, Berlin that I thought it Global Destinations With this in the backdrop we decided to catch up with Madeleine Marx, GM, Scandic Hamburg Emporio hotel on her success as a lady GM and about her hotel. Excerpts Can you briefly tell about your career in hospitality and the chal- lenges you faced? I believe it’s in our blood. My par- ents had two restaurants in Hamburg while my grandfather was a hotel GM. With a master in hospitality management from Cornell-Essec in Paris, started with Marriott in Paris, then Boston, opening of Hamburg Marriott (lst German hotel), Frank- furt, and back in Hamburg with Ren- aissance and Marriott, mostly as director of sales & marketing but also 9 years as GM. Opportunity with Scandic came up in 2014 end to handle the hotel. Hotel business is always challenging, but also rewarding. We deal with many different types of human beings - guests, cus- tomers, employees, suppliers, and owners/ investors. It may be difficult to believe today but in 1980 mostly women were not allowed at front desk at luxury hotels, so I worked in accounting. Work-life balance with family is a challenge in hotel business but my devotion to my profession made me become a GM quite early in my career. What is it that makes Scandic Hamburg Emporio different from the other hotels in Hamburg? There are four main USPS - Friendly and casual but profession- al team members who make guests feel like being among friends; Scandinavian design; Sustainability efforts while being a design hotel; Accessibility (we cater to guests with special needs). Can you throw more light on areas where sustainability has been implemented in your hotel? May - June 2015
  19. 19. HOSllilaIilV It’s found in almost every little detail. The building has a silver award from the German society of sustainable building construc- tion (DGNB) and have received numerous certifications, i. e. GreenGlobe, my climate—protect our planet, GreenBand Ger- many. Certified Green Hotel (German Travel Mgmt Association). All rooms equipment and material is up to 95% reclycable or already made from recycling material. Bed linen is specially made (needs less water and washing powder). Mostly regionally supplied products, partially also 100% organic. Vegan and vege- tarian dishes on the menu. Gluten free offering at breakfast and on menu. No tablecloth, no place mats. We also have own Scandic water, i. e. tap water specially fil- tered and also available with gas, no other mineral waters to avoid CO2 emissions from transportation. Special bottles made from recycled glass. Electricity from Greenpeace Energy, 100% sus- tainable energy sources. Corporate social responsibility has a great portion as well: every Scandic has at least 3 initiatives/ char- ities per year it supports. So do we here locally in Hamburg. You are based in mixed use complex and build by the same owner. How beneficial has it been and any disadvantages? It’s been very beneficial in several ways: the owner is interest- ed in our economic well-being, so they include us in their market- ing efforts where they can. I have known them from my previous assignment at Marriott and the co-operation has always been very good. Further benefit is that the tenants in the Emporio tower (office building) book their ovemight guests and often conferences. Also workers in these company offices use our lunch offer. as well as the bar for after-work drinks. The latter is also true for some of the tenants in the residential portion of the building. May — June 2015 What hopes and aspirations do you have for Scandic Hamburg Emporio? I want the Scandic Hamburg Emporio to become the preferred hotel in downtown Hamburg for both the business and leisure traveler who enjoy the relaxed and friendly atmosphere in a Scan- dinavian design setting. At the same time these guests can be sure to be contributing to a sustainable environment while being on the road. My aspiration is also that the hotel is financially successful for all stakeholders. For dedicated team members enjoying to be serving hotel guests we provide secure jobs while also giving them opportunities to pursue a career in the hospitality industry. Our owners benefit from Scandic managing their hotel, and Sean- dic is able to grow their presence in Germany. Apart from your hotel you are keen on promoting Hamburg as a destination. Absolutely. I grew up in this city and as almost everyone in Hamburg would say: “it’s the most wonderful city in the world”. Aside from that bias I do believe that Hamburg has so much vari- ety to offer for all kinds of travelers. If I had the time I would spend the day in the lobby giving all guests advice on what they should take a look at or experience. An impressive harbor, the greenest large city in Germany, cultural and entertainment high- lights for almost all tastes, a vast variety of sightseeing attrac- tions, extremely nice shopping. For business travelers an airport that is not far away from town but well connected, several train stations, great public transport, and a centrally located congress center and fair grounds. What else can you ask for? With the spending power of Indians on the rise, India has become a very potential market. How do you plan to — tap it? Hamburg’s only disadvantage is the fact that most Visitors are from Germany. So nationally it’s well known and in high demand. In Europe interest is growing, internationally the city is not on the trav- elers map (yet). It also lacks a little bit of an international offering in the cultural/ entertainment sector which I hope will develop with the rising num- bers of foreign travelers. Hopefully the Global Destinations

  22. 22. I l| iI»rII, lI'rrII‘IrJi city’s application to host the 2024 summer Olympics will come through and help put Hamburg into the international spot light. Currently about 25% of the 12 million visitors (LY) in a year are from outside of Germany. This is up from about 20% only a few years ago. With that I hope that the Indian traveler will also take notice and become interested both in business and leisure. However at this point India is not top of the list as a developing source mar- ket for Hamburg and thus for us as a single hotel with no brand awareness in India it is not feasible to tap into this market. I do think that your Global Destinations and hopefully in the future other media will help with promoting the city in India. Being a male-dominated industry and very few women as GM, What advice would you give young girls entering this industry? I think that our industry has undergone quite a bit of change in that respect already. So slowly but surely we are getting more and more women who are interested in pursuing a career as a GM. My advice is to stay focused on that goal and be engaged and coura- geous. I see a hotel in almost all aspects like a large household where you have a team helping you to make the guests’ stay enjoyable and fruitfiil while at the same time having to watch what you spend. Being a host(ess) can be so rewarding and look- ing back into history the hostess in large households has pretty much always been a female. So we women should be (and are) very capable GMs — I dare say perhaps better than our male coun- terparts. And this exclusive suites hotel is run by a lady - Pooja Patti, General Manager, Svelte Hotel & Personal Suites. “The hotel was going through a bad phase with a lot of attrition. I have been fortunate in bringing the hotel back on tracks, ” said Pooja Patti. With over 12 years of experience working with chains like Taj, Renaissance, Carlson and Zuri group of hotels she has been a part of quite a ’ few pre opening teams. This experience has naturally helped her a lot. Svelte Hotel is located in Saket (a well established business and entertainment district of Delhi) surround- ed by three malls including the Select City Walk mall. It is also only 40 minutes drive from the Domestic and International Airport, Connaught Place and Delhi’s largest convention and exhibition centers like Pragati Maidan, India Expo Center and Indian Habitat Center. For the leisure travelers its 20-25 minutes away from the most popular sightseeing locations like Qutub Minar, ISCKON Temple and Lotus Temple. Being an all suite hotel it has the largest room sizes in compar- ison to some of the most luxurious hotels in Delhi. The hotel offers 8lluxurious suites that are custom—made to cater the needs of business and leisure travelers. To get an insight into the hotel we spoke with Pooja Patti who has been successful in getting an healthy ARR while most hotels are struggling. Excerpts What is your USP? In a single word Location. We are located in a mixed use com- plex. For our guests they have an option to shop at three malls — Select City Walk Mall, DLF Place Mall and MGF Metropolitan Global Destinations Mall which have over 500 major Indian and intemational brands, spas, multiplexes, restaurants, pubs etc. With over 100+ food out- lets guests have a variety of choices. Since we also have a kitch- enette in each suite guests can opt for cooking. Alternately they can order in room service or from any of the restaurants located in the mall. We have tied up with most of them — restaurants as well as shopping outlets and are able to pass on good discounts to our guests. The best part is that the rooms are noise free even though you are literally staying in a mall. Being an all suite hotel how spacious are your rooms? This is one of our biggest advantages over many other hotels. Our starting suite the executive suite is spread over an area of 450 sq. ft with one bedroom with an attached bathroom, a separate living room and a small but well equipped kitchenette. The deluxe suite is a two bedroom suite spread over 800sq. with a common living room and a separate dining area and a little kitchenette. This is ideal for families. The grand suites are, I per- sonally feel one of the best two bed- room suites in Delhi — spread over a spacious 1100 sq. ft. , these suites have two spacious bedrooms with attached bathrooms, a e living and ' dining area with an attached fully equipped kitchenette. Rattan Lal the executive chef is an unassuming person who can do wonders with his dishes, Having almost 40 years of experience in numerous countries and having worked for top brands like Sheraton, he returned to India to relax but landed up joining Svelte. He handles the 54 cover multi cuisine dining restaurant named The Lounge which offers a wide array of Continen- tal, Chinese, Thai, Indonesian and Indian cuisines. “Not just that we have the on call chef and I have had the oppor- tunity to cater to some of the CEOS and MDS. 26. 26. HIFI 2015: Hospitality industry poised for growth (HIFI) was able to attract over 350 delegates from the hos- pitality and tourism sector. Being the countries most important hotel investment conference its turning out to be the right platform to deliberate, network, update oneself on the latest trends and also seek new opportunities. HIFI is hosted by Burba Hotel Network (BHN) and Horwath HTL. James E Burba, President, BHN in his presentation during the plenary session pointed out that Indian economy will improve in the current year and there will be more money available for development activities in 2015. “With the growing middle class and increasing tourist arrivals to India, the supply for room inven- tory also needs to increase and as per trends observed so far, Indi- an hotel constructions have gone up to 47 per cent in 2014 and will keep on increasing to about 60 per cent by 2015 year-end, ” he added. Giving statistics Vijay P Thacker, Director, Horwath HTL India said 10,000 + hotel rooms were added last year, and nearly 30,000 more rooms are in the pipeline over the next three to four The seventh edition of the Hotel Investment Forum India years. He felt that one should have a holistic approach for the Indian market to grow. “To commence with, the restructuring of roads, easing the norms, mindset ofthe owners about the delayed payment shall be worked upon. If the hospitality sector receives similar amount of attention as compared to business hotel, sup- port from the public partnership then there might be chances of a brighter future for hospitality, ” he said. Delivering the keynote address Deep Kalra, Founder & Group CEO, MakeMyTrip. com said that while online booking for flight tickets has reached 45 per cent, booking hotels online has only a six per cent penetration in the Indian market. He also felt that the room tariffs need to be dynamic to maximise yield with opaque pricing systems and with different rates for weekdays and week- ends, for business and leisure travellers, day use rooms etc. Dr Lalit Panwar, Secretary Tourism, Government of India said the country would be able to reach the much anticipated 14 mil- lion inbound tourists over the next three years to achieve its tar- get of contributing at least 1% share of global contribution in world tourism. Dr. Panwar talked about the changing dynamics in the tourism sector. His statement that in a bid to encourage more investments into the sector legitimate concessions will be consid- Global Destinations ered for the hotel industry including infrastructure status was received with applause. Discussing about the potential of MICE, Naveen Jain, Presi- dent, Duet India Hotels said that it is a 300 billion dollar market where India is getting only 1.2 per cent share. For MICE growth there has to be a government and private partnership to create Convention Centres in major cities to accommodate the large conferences. Elizabeth Randall-Winkle, Managing Director, STR Global who presented the Global Hotel Industry Performance survey of STR Global said the US market has witnessed uninterrupted RevPAR growth for 57 months, and 2014 was a record for US hotels, in terms of RevPAR and ADRs, after 2005. The European market, too, also witnessed 16 consecutive months of occupancy growth and 12 consecutive months of ADR growth. Focusing on India she said, “While occupancies at hotels in India improved by three per cent, average rates declined by 2.70 per cent. They have to explore strategies to improve rates. ” Rajeev Menon, Assistant Vice-President, Marriott Intemation- al said that the group has been expanding rapidly in India and that their properties have performed well and showed growth, in terms of RevPAR and ADRs. Dilip Puri, Managing Director-India & Regional Vice—President, Starwood Hotels & Resorts felt that as supply has more or less stabilised in most micro markets it has resulted in an improved operating environment for the industry. He further added that while the industry debates the potential of the domestic market, owing to the mindset problem, the hospital- ity sector is yet to have full faith in the domestic market. On the sidelines Atul Chordia, Chairman & CEO, Panchshil Realty said, “We will develop two high—end luxury hotels in Mal- dives and Sri Lanka. We have already tied up with Marriott Inter- national, Inc. for their luxury brand, Bvlgari, for the 82—room high—end resort property in Maldives. While in Sri Lanka it will be a high—end golf resort in Bentota. ” HIFI held annually attracts Investors, Owners, Lenders, Devel- opers, Hotel Chain/ Management Company Executives, Invest- ment Bankers, Vacation Ownership Executives, Financial Advi- sors, Real Estate & Financial Intermediaries, Builders, Consult- ants, Lawyers, Architects & Designers, Government Tourism Officials and Media. 30. 30. Ilnsnitalitv An exceptional Ibis with a swimming pool cations & Loyalty Programme, Accor hotels, I visited my first hotel in Aerocity. Aerocity which was going to be a hub for airport hotels went through difficult times three years after construction commenced when security issues were raised. Withl6 hotels planned including top brands (some ready to open) it was a set back for many not just financially but also the stress involved was huge. Finally a year back the green signal was given and Ibis was one of the first to open its doors. “Yes it was a great relief to us. We have started doing extreme- ly good business ~ thanks to our excellent pricing, service and certainly the brand which has got us any International clientele. ” said Matthieu Firrnin, General Manager of ibis Delhi Airport. Having been associated with Accor for over 12 years including the Deputy GM of the 556 rooms ibis Charles De Gaulle Airport knew exactly what he was talking. The pick up from the airport was _ perfect and the drive to the hotel which took just 10 minutes was smooth. Close to the airport as well as metro, I felt it is very convenient- ly located for transit passengers as well as business people. I was informed that this is the ninth ibis hotel in India and has the largest inventory of 316 rooms. The hotel in order to attract guests as well as build up awareness had launched an online cam- paign. ”We launched the hotel with an online campaign ‘Pay What You Want’ enabling customers to choose how much they would like to pay for their room. Limited to only a single night it became a great success especially for those seeking value accom- modation. Also its proximity to the International Airport has been an advantage as it has attracted both domestic & international travelers, ” said Matthieu F irrnin. The rooms and bathroom size wise are decent with even a nice working space. The complimentary wifi is good and strong and I was informed it is good up to three devices which is quite good with many travelers being tech savvy. The people across the hotel are warm and friendly. The hotel has a shuttle every 30 minutes to the airport. Breakfast at their Spice It restaurant was great. Spice It is the Co—ordinating with Amisha Gutgutia, Manager — Communi- hotels signature multi—cuisine restau- rant offering breakfast spread across eight-hours. A non-stop breakfast concept starting 4.30 am to 12 noon which is unique in the hotel industry especially the economy category. The executive chef explained the breakfast was divided into 3 seg- ments - cold continental breakfast is available from 4.30am till 6.30am for those who have an early flight to catch and also from 10.30am till 12 noon. A hot buffet selection is pro- vided from 6.30am till 10.30am. The restaurant also offers an inter- active kitchen and live cooking. It serves buffets and a la carte selec- tions for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bar offers a wide selection of wines, spirits and snacks. Food was really great as the hotel has a well spread breakfast with some tasty dishes. I enjoyed the idlis. The restaurant has lots of natural light and sufficient seating space. The Al fresco area too offers dining experience in a comfortable and lively environment. They also have a Hub Bar were you can grab a quick drink. The best part is that this Ibis has a pool. For the first time in India, an ibis hotel features a heated swimming pool. Having been to many Ibis this was the first time I came across an Ibis with a swimming pool and that too heated. Generally at the room price of Ibis its difficult maintaining a pool and this is quite a big and swimming pool. If you have the time it would be a good idea to take a swim and then relax by the pool for a few hours. They also have a fitness centre that is open all-day. If they add on a Spa it would become a truly five star hotel. This lbis also has larger meeting spaces with break—out sessions for the business traveller. The hotel has 3 meeting rooms at the lobby level which can be combined for a total capacity of 300sqm accommodating 150 guests. All meeting rooms have a contempo- rary ambience. Audio—visual equipment, theme set—up and dis- plays are available on demand. Global Destinations May - June 2015

  35. 35. Samsungs user-bendable TV In 2014 CES a bendable TV was showcased for the first time by Samsung and announced the TV as a concept. At 2015 CES Samsung unveiled a mammoth 105-inch model. The UNl05S9B TV with a huge 105-inch screen can curve at its owner's com- mand. The 21 :9 aspect ratio makes the screen significantly wider than most TVs making it perfect for most blockbuster movies. A . r—‘—. r. _ r‘ ~ 1 curved screen arguably makes more sense for a wider display. Samsung said that it has refined the technology to fit the owner’s comfort. Press a button on the remote control and the screen bends the edges while a second button reverses process — making it normal. The TV can be bent in such a way that the curvature of the screen is changed without affecting the overall size of the set. To achieve this, only the back of the TV will expand or contract in size. Toshiba’s ChihiraAico Robo A humanoid communications robot named ChihiraAico was greeting media and visitors at Toshiba’s stand during CES. This "lifelike" robot could speak in English or Japanese, and even sing a song. According to LG, you can control the degree-angle of the display's curvature using the TV remote. The range of curvature takes into account the screen size and viewing distance, serving up an optimal viewing experience. As per Hyun-hoi Ha, CEO of LG's Home Entertainment Company, LG's Flexible OLED TV is a product that has to be seen to be believed because it defies description. The Emotia Smart Belt can be a solution to keep track of how much you eat and when to stop. This belt from from Paris-based startup Emiota adjusts to your belly size -Tm throughout the day tracking how much food you've eaten, how much exercise you've been doing and all other physi- cal activity through- out the day. It does this through an app _ p ‘ that is connected to . .2‘, . the in built gyroscope, accelerometer and a bunch of other sensors installed in the belt. It will slim and expand itself on your waist using built-in motors depending on if you're sitting down -- or if just ate way too much. It’s a new idea in the field of wearable tech. Global Destinations F r I World’s First Smartscooter Living in Mumbai is not easy. Congested and etemally dug up roads, population and pollution, too many non eco friendly vehi- cles emitting substantial CO2 among other toxic chemicals, petrol prices on the rise. Though eco-friendliness is the buzz word, its implementation is still a long way. But the Gogoro's new Smartscooter — the world's first high-performance, zero emis- sions, two—wheeled electric vehicle built specifically for the world's most populated cities — will help solve this to a certain extent. The best part that I liked was the mod- ular battery-swap- ping infrastructure — where you don’t have to wait for don’t need to wait to refuel or recharge the Smartscooter instead just drop off the used batteries and get freshly charged ones. Its battery, which uses Panasonic's 18650-size automotive-grade lithium-ion energy cells, near field communication (NFC) and 256-bit encryption, forms part of a modular battery exchange network the company hopes will span the megacities of tomorrow. The so-called GoSta- tions will be built at strategic locations around urban centers where as per the company users can replace their depleted batter- ies in a six-second swap. In the long run there would be vending machine for batteries too. The scooter has a total of 30 sensors onboard, including gravi- ty, shock and ambient light sensors, synchronizing data across the app, battery, the GOStations and the scooter. These sensors are able to detect when a part gives out or if something goes awry on the vehicle. It also has always-on Bluetooth connectivity that pairs with a smartphone app, allowing users to customize various parts of the vehicle. Ultra lightweight and incredibly strong, Gogoro’s Aeroframe monocoque chassis is stamped out of racing grade aluminum that makes it stiffer, stronger, lighter and more responsive. The Smartscooter reaches perfect 50/50 balance when the rider sits. May - June 2015
