  3. 3. Dear Friends The 49th edition of ITB will see more than 10,000 exhibitors from around 190 countries and regions will be presenting their innovative products and services in the 26 display halls in Berlin. Estimated 100,000 trade visitors are expected to update themselves on the tourism I I, industry’s products and services. Of the 190 countries India is one of the countries occupying . . ‘ an entire hall again. We have again previewed this all important trade event. Having met B. P Acharya, Principal Secretary, Planning and Tourism, Telagana while doing a feature on Hyderabad for my EIBTM, Barcelona issue, the topic of ITB, Berlin came 0 Z 1 ‘- ' ' H V [(3 ‘, up. We felt that to promote the new state globally, ITB, the worlds largest travel event would ~ I '~ I, ', ".“. f 1k . . . . . ~‘ I r / be an ideal platform. Taking this cue we decided to have a focus on this new state. , ‘ ‘~. / Telangana was separated from Andhra Pradesh as a new 29th state of India just 9 months 0 _ ‘ , back and is the twelfth largest state in India. Its major cities include Hyderabad, Warangal, , " '~ " ‘ “K ‘ « ' Karimnagar and Nizamabad. For seven days we traversed across the state covering most ' ‘ ' ‘ T 'T'' T” . tourist spots and some of the most prominent hotels in the city. Chandmgupta Amritkar Editor Hyderabad, an ancient 400-year-old-city has a lot for the tourist both Indian and foreign — lots of sightseeing, shopping, culture, art, entertainment, attars (Indian perfumes, culinary traditions (especially the aromatic biryani) etc. Also known as the Pearl City, Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana offers tourists both cultural and historical experiences. chandraguptaa@hotmail. com We also covered Chilkur, Vikarabad, Shamirpet, Yadagirigutta, Kolanpaka, Pembarti — The Brass crafts village, Ramappa Temple, the much neglected Ghanpur Temples, Laknavaram Lake and hanging bridge, Warangal, Kondagattu, Dharrnapuri, Jannaram and Kawal wildlife sanctuary, Nirmal paintings and Nizamabad. Among the hotels in Hyderabad we have focused on three different types — a Palace hotel, a business hotel and an airport hotel. Taj Falaknuma Palace that has been ranked as the number 1 attraction in Hyderabad by tripadvisor readers. Apart from a luxury destination in itself Taj Falaknuma Palace is fast becoming a popular MICE and wedding destination with Bollywood stars, Kings and Princes, Prime Ministers and Presidents, Entrepreneurs and CEOs looking forward to hold shootings, conferences, weddings and receptions or just simply to experience the Indian hospitality at its best. We have interviewed the young Girish Sehgal, GM of Taj Falaknuma Palace. The other hotel is located in the heart of Gachibowli, the new IT suburb of Hyderabad. Standing majestically is the newly branded Radisson Hyderabad Hitec City. Earlier known as Aditya Sarovar Premiere, this hotel has been able to attract the MNC crowd in this area. With the arrival of the global brand they upgraded their room amenities, gave touches to the exterior, security was increased by using latest equipments. The hotel has 202 rooms of various sizes and types. The Presidential Suite is a gem and worth the money as we had an opportunity to experience it. The third hotel is Novotel Hyderabad Airport. Strategically located close to the airport the hotel has most of the facilities that an International resort will have — over six acres of beautifully landscaped area with lots of greenery, A huge Sports Arena with a tennis court, basket ball court and a sandpit volley ball court, a pool table, an outdoor pool facing the restaurant, excellent F&B options, an O2 spa that offers an extensive menu of over 30 types of body and beauty treatments (I experience one of the treatments and it was relaxing), an excellent gym, 2 MBPS complimentary intemet (though there was an issue as it kept logging out of my iPad and mobile repeatedly and I had to log in again), 305 rooms including 11 Suites and one accessible room, Apple computers’ in the lobby (a fixed Novotel feature) etc. With some of the best hotels, tourist spots, temples, art and culture — Telangana has the capability to give a run to many prominent tourist states of India. 8. 8. ”Hydercibad has the best infrastructure for MICE sector in India” India's new state is all set to launch its global campaign at the worlds largest tourism event ITB, Berlin. With a view to get an insight into the plans for the state we at Global Destinations caught up with B. P Acharya, Principal Secretary, Planning and Tourism, Govt. of Telangana who is one of the few pro-active IAS officers who leads the team from the front and is quite receptive to new ideas and firm on implementing posi- tive ideas for the betterment of the new state. Excerpts As a new state you have initiated plans to renew tourism promotion efforts in Telangana. What will be the initial strat- egy in order to support this? Our initial strategy is to create a separate identity and brand of Telangana Tourism and take the new logo to the public. Its good news that you are participating at ITB Berlin. What’s the main purpose and how do you plan to take bene- fit from this global event? The main purpose is to showcase Telangana and Hyderabad to the World, particularly in the context of Hyderabad being recent- ly ranked as the second best among the world’s ‘Must-See’ desti- nations by ‘National Geographic Traveler’. We aim to promote Hyderabad as a global destination in ITB Berlin. Any the tourism branding program that you have? Tourism branding is for Telangana in general and Hyderabad in particular. How do you place Telangana as a value for money destina- tion? I can proudly say our state is one of the most pocket friendly states in India. Hyderabad is one of the most affordable metros in India in terms of hotel rates and also is well connected from all parts of India. Hence, it offers the tourist the value for money, considering the rich heritage and diversity of attractions in the City. Apart from that most of our tourist destinations are having good and reasonably priced hotels. Also our food is not only tasty but also very affordable. Hiring vehicles also is not at all expen- sive. What should tourists plan when they visit Telangana? After visiting Hyderabad, the tourists could plan trips on The Kakatiya circuit covering Warangal and other areas or the Bud- dhist circuit covering Nagarjun Sagar. There is also Eco Tourism circuit covering Adilabad district and Kawal tiger reserve. Two or three days on the above circuits is recommended, apart from a couple of days in Hyderabad. Any UNESCO heritage sites? Not yet but it may be happening soon. Infact l-lyderabad and Warangal monuments are already included in the tentative list of UNESCO heritage sites and our Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Global Destinations Rao has already sought inclusion of Hyderabad as India’s official entry for inclusion in UNESCO’s world heritage sites. We are hopeful of final selection soon. How’s the infrastructure when it comes to hotels and accommodation? Hyderabad has many reputed hotels and other parts have decent tourist infrastructure including our very own State Tourism Cor- poration run hotels. Most of the reputed brands like the Marriott, Taj, ITC, Radisson, Novotel, Hyatt, Trident, Lemon Tree are already there in Hyderabad and looking to further expand. MICE is a hot topic. You have HITEX, HICC, Falaknuma Palace. How do you plan to get more domestic and Interna- tional conferences? Hyderabad has the best infrastructure for MICE sector in India and has emerged as the hub for conferences and exhibitions. HITEX is one of the best trade fair venue spread over 50 acres with 3 big halls, HICC has the largest conference setting in India. Taj Falaknuma Palace, the former residence of the Nizam of Hyderabad, is a perfect location for high end MICE. The setting is so wonderful our International guests will love it. Apart from this Hyderabad International airport is also an excellent gateway to International guests. What is the potential for Wellness Tourism? Yoga and Ayurveda provide a huge potential for growth of Wellness tourism. Presence of many world class hospitals also makes Hyderabad the emerging hub of medical tourism in India. What are the challenges that Telangana Tourism faces and how did you overcome them? The main challenge is to step of marketing and to adopt inno- vative methods to attract tourists. In the next 3 years what’s you vision for the state? Our vision is to consolidate the position of Hyderabad as a global tourist destination and to attract tourists to hitherto lesser known tourist spots in Telangana. Mar — Apr 2015

  10. 10. Telangana: The Princely State Having met B. P Acharya, Principal Secretary, Planning and Tourism, Telagana while doing a feature on Hyderabad for my EIBTM, Barcelona issue, the topic of ITB, Berlin came up. We felt that to promote the new state globally, ITB, the worlds largest travel event would be an ideal platform. Taking this cue we decided to have a focus on this new state. 29th state of India just 9 months back and is the twelfth largest state in India. Its major cities include Hyderabad, Warangal, Karimnagar and Nizamabad. Telangana was separated from Andhra Pradesh as a new Hyderabad This ancient 400-year-old-city has a lot for the tourist both Indian and foreign — lots of sightseeing, shopping, culture, art, entertainment, attars (Indian perfumes, culinary traditions (espe- cially the aromatic biryani) etc. Also known as the Pearl City, Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana, offers tourists both cultural and historical experiences. An ideal place to start your journey is the Charminar. I saw Charminar from a distance and I fell in love. But as I went closer apart from feating on the see the beautiful architecture I would feel the dust and notice the crowds. Vendors may annoy you a lot to buy their products. Don’t forget to bargain. At 180 feet it is the signature of Hyderabad. Built by Quli Qutub Shah in 1591 it is an Islamic architectural masterpiece. It is widely accepted that Charminar was built at the center of the city, to commemorate the eradication of plague as Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah had prayed for the end of a plague that was rav- aging his city and vowed to build a Mosque at the very place where he prayed. It is a square edifice with each side 20 meters long, with four grand arches each facing a cardinal point that open into four streets. At each comer stands an exquisitely shaped minaret, 56 meters high with a double balcony. There are 149 winding steps to reach the upper floor. One can have a panoram- ic view of the surrounding areas by seeing from the top of the minarets. The structure is made of granite, limestone, mortar and pulverised marble. While it’s a historic site Very few people know Global Destinations that it is also a mosque. A thriving market exists around the Charminar and some of the cities famous markets like Laad Baazar where you can get ban- gles of lac and glass, pearls, jewellery, attars (Indian perfumes) and products such as silverware, Nirmal, Kalainkari paintings and artefacts, bidriware, lacquer bangles studded with stones, saris, handwoven materials silk and cotton ware are made etc. One can also relish the traditional food, like Biryani, Mirchi ka salari, Double Ka Meetha etc. Southwest of the Charminar is a Symbolic Mosque Mecca Masjid built by the 6th Qutub Shahi Sultan of Hyderabad. The three arched facades have been carved from a single piece of granite, which took five years to quarry. At any point in time, this holy shrine can accommodate up to ll,000 worshippers. Mecca Masjid is so named because a stone was brought from Mecca around which this masj id is built. Mar — Apr 2015

But a major part of his career has been spent in Hyderabad — almost 16 years. With Telangana as the cover story we thought it ideal to have a brief interaction with him. Excerpts Having been in Hyderabad for so many years how do you feel the creation of Telangana is going to help the city and the new state? Hyderabad has been very close to me and my family as we have spent nearly 16 years in this beautiful city. With the forma- tion of the State Telangana we are looking forward to coming back and settle down in this city post March 2015. There should be more vigour in promoting this beautiful city to become a true metropolitan city where people from different parts of the coun- try and the world live in harmony and work with synergy to bring this city on the tourist map of the world. What is the potential for new hotels mushrooming across the state and International brands vying for a pie? Global Destinations l) bonsai gardens, sanctuary gardens, Japanese Garden, mythologi- cal film sets, Film set for jail, airport, railway station, shooting locations of many movies, Television shows, making of a film etc. For overnight stays they have two hotels Sitara and Tara. Other attractions include - Birla Mandir, Amanda Buddha Vihara, J agannath Temple, Birla Science Museum, Birla Planetar- ium etc. Nehru Zoological Park which spans 300 acres and has over 250 species of animals and birds. Hussainsagar Lake is a man-made lake famous for the 19-metre tall Buddha statue. It is one of the World’s tallest monolithic statues of the Buddha stand- ing on the ‘Rock of Gibraltar’, in the middle of the lake. Boating and water sports are a regular feature in the Hussainsagar. Falaknuma Palace is worth a visit and now being a Heritage Hotel run by Taj group one can also stay like a royal. After a trip of Hyderabad I proceeded to Hotel Haritha Plaza, a centrally located in Hyderabad, where the tourism people had hooked me for the night. Being a govemment run enterprise it was surprisingly a well maintained Hotel — reasonably clean and reasonably courteous staff. The rooms are also spacious. The hotel includes free breakfast and free wifi. After having a good breakfast we proceeded on a 4 day trip crisscrossing the state. “I see a large potential in domestic tourism” Veer Vijay Singh, Chief My belief is that the new govemment will strongly approach the promotion of tourism and related industries. This will surely bring in guests from all over the world and therefore the need to have good hotels in all categories will be felt. The city has seen influx of new hotels and I am sure a good balance of supply and demand will be met in the days to come. What steps can the state take to make hospitality a major player in the state? I have always advocated the importance of Tourism and Hospi- tality as this is not only a foreign exchange earner but also gener- ates substantial employment. As I see a large potential in domes- tic tourism, I am sure the state will make all efforts to take advan- tage of this fact and strengthen their needs to play a supportive role by having an obstacle free tourism policy and proactive approach to support the needs of tourists by maintaining the tourist monuments and having high quality infrastructure. Taj has five properties in Hyderabad. How do they compete with each other? Taj has multiple properties in many cities of India and it has five hotels in Hyderabad of various brands. We have ensured that these hotels “Compliment” each other and not “Compete”. There is a high level of synergy between these hotels and ensuring rev- enue growths and cutting down costs. 16. 16. Chilkur Our first stop was the Mrugavani National Park located at Chilkur just 28 km from Hotel Haritha Plaza. Spread across 850 acres its home to over 500 spotted deer’s and peacocks plus 600 different types of plant life. For those who would like to stay the forest department has two small but lovely cottages priced at just Rs.300/- each. Our next halt was the Chilkur Balaji Temple popularly known as Visa Balaji Temple. It is one of the oldest temples in Hyder- abad. I was astonished that this temple does not accept any money from the devotees (does not have a hundi) and special privileges for VVlPs or government officials. Also many believe that a visit to the shrine will solve their visa problems. The devotee apart from the usual rituals of prayer goes through 11 pradikshinas of the inner shrine, and makes a wish. After its fulfilled the devotees return to walk 108 times around the sanctum sanctorum. The majority of wishes by devotees are visa related. At 10am in the morning there was substantial crowd and many were carrying a slip of paper with 108 boxes where they could mark the number of pradikshinas that they completed. I was informed approxi- mately 75,000 to l,00,000 devotees visit every week. also has a nice resort with 5 rooms and a nice restaurant. TSTDC have a chain of Haritha Hotels which are spread across the state of Telangana at all major tourist destinations and also wayside amenities on major national highways which we used frequently in our 4 days of travel. Vikarabad Our next halt was at Sri Anantha Padmanabha Swamy Temple (another incamation of Lord Vishnu), , Vikarabad which is 75 km from Hyderabad. It’s a beautiful temple. Vikarabad being in a forest zone and surrounded by many small hills is fast turning out to be a trekking destination and a good place for Rappelling and Rock Climbing. Tourists can follow forest trails enjoying the panoramic views fresh water streams and the greenery. Botonical stu- dents frequently visit this place. Government of India (Gol) has put in substantial amount too develop it as an eco—tourism destination. Thanks to its pleasant atmosphere and plenty of medic- inal plans its an ideal place for TB or chest infection Global Destinations patients. Infact the Nizam of Hyderabad had constructed a TB hospital that cured several lakhs of people. The hospital, which was constructed on 160 acres, has 417 beds but due to new med- icines to treat TB and reduction in TB cases the hospital is today in a dilapidated condition. But the new government has plans to bring it to its former glory by shifting a chest hospital here. TSTDC Haritha hotel is also located in close vicinity. It has 32 AC standard rooms and 2 suites. It also has an amphitheater. Shamirpet From here we turned back towards Hyderabad on the way to our next stop Shamirpet Lake, an artificial lake near Hyderabad. The lake attracts many birds, making it a good birdwatching spot. It’s also a nice film location. There is also a small temple of the local deity Katta Maisamma. The Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani Hyderabad campus is also situated near the lake. There is a Jawahar Deer Park, which contains many deer, peacocks and different Birds. Haritha Shamirpet Resort is a pop- ular weekend getaway close to Shamirpet Lake. The resort has 12 cottages — six lake facing and six garden view. All cottages are named after birds. The annual brahmotsavam is held in the month of March, which includes Yedurkolu, The Celestial Wedding and Divya Vimana Rathotsavam. Lord Narasimha is also known as Yadagiri, hence the name Yadagirigutta. While a major part of the accommodation facility at Yada- girigutta is available on uphill and managed by the Devastanam, TSTDC Haritha hotel is also located in close vicinity. It’s a good hotel with an excellent location. The F&B was also good and the manager was mentioning it’s a popular hotel for marriages. I told him that the rooms, TV and AC require to be upgraded and main- tained. He said that the new government has allotted funds for the upgradation of the hotel. Felt nice. After a so-so sleep thanks to a few mosquitoes and a good breakfast, we left at 8.30am. The driver updated me that yester- day we had traveled 290kms. Kolanpaka Our next halt was Kolanpaka just 20kms away from Yada- girigutta and 80 km from Hyderabad. Located here is the well renowned Kulpakji Temple - a famous Jain shrine. It is said to be . ?;7r_ ‘ . !4— «-4»: v— I‘ r . .' . r r ? ,-, ?;’f more than two thousand years old and in its present form, is more than eight hundred years old. The temple houses three idols: one each of Lord Rishabha, Lord Neminath, and Lord Mahaveer. The statue of Lord Mahaveer is 130 centimetres (51 in) tall and is said to be made of a single piece of jade. There are eight idols of the other Tirthankars on both the sides of the main temple. The prem- ises are extremely quite and peaceful. There are two dharamsha- las with about 150 rooms and a big common hall. Jainism was prevalent in the state before the 4th century. A number of Jain antiquities have been discovered in Kulpak. Pembarti — The Brass crafts village Our next halt was Pembarti. Indian brass is renowned the world over and Pembarti, a small village of Telangana is a center of brass work. The intricate sheet metal brass engravings and arti- facts are believed to have originated in the Pembarti village. Here most of the residents are involved in making statues, carvings, castings in copper alloys like bronze and brass. Pembarti Brass- ware has become synonymous with Telangana and its artistic her- itage. Ramappa Temple After a two hour drive we reached Ramappa Temple, where the presiding deity is Lord Siva. It’s a gem and I was smprised that it’s not promoted properly. When we arrived film shooting was going on and there was quite a crowd. Spread across a huge area with gardens the Temple is 80 Kms from Warangal and 165 Kms from Hyderabad. I was astonished to know that the Temple is named after the sculptor Ramappa, probably the only temple in the world named after its sculptor/ architect. History says that it took 40 years to build this temple. Built in 1213 the brilliant Kakatiya art can be seen here and it has been described as the "brightest star in the galaxy of medieval temples in the Deccan". The roof of the temple is built with bricks, which are so light that they are able to float on water. Do look out for the 526 elephants — each one different from the other. The entire temple complex is enclosed with a compound wall. At the entrance to the temple is a ruined Nandi mandapam, with an imposing 9 ft high Nandi. The Shivalingam in the sanctum also rises to a height of 9 ft. For our lunch we proceeded to Haritha Hotel, Ramappa which is located next to the huge Ramappa Lake, another man — made wonder of the Kakatiyas. There are 8 beautiful cottages facing the lake and surrounded by forests — making it an ideal spot for boat- ing and trekking. Ghanpur Temples Though very close to the illustrious Ramappa Temple, Ghanpur is not on the list of most tourists and truly the temples are almost forgotten. When we visited there was nobody at the temple and the temple — slightly restored, mostly in ruins but it was pleasing to the eyes. Theres a brand new AP Tourism’s restaurant, Haritha Ghanpur which was closed and no one of authority around. The Ghanpur group of temples, comprising of 22 temples constructed within a double walled stone enclosure contain a veritable muse- um of Kakatiya art and architecture. Among the group of temples, the main temple, which is dedicated to Lord siva is most attrac- tive. To the south of the main temple, there is a pillared mandap. Laknavaram Lake and hanging bridge I did not that India has its own a much smaller version of the famous San Francisco suspension bridge till I visited Lak- navaram. The place had a lot of tourists and students — unfortu- nately mainly from the southem states. Located 200 + km from Mar — Apr 2015 Hyderabad city, Laknavaram lake, spread across 10,000 acres is has an excellent geographical location with greenery, water, hillocks, islands and the hanging bridge. One can relish the breathtaking View of the lake and its islands, enjoy the sunrise or sunset. The lake located in thick jungle was discovered by Kakatiya rulers and to make it a tourist destination the Tourism department constructed a massive suspension (hanging) bridge. It has around 13 beautiful islands two of which are connected with a hanging bridge. One can walk across the bridge to the island where the tourism department has constructed a resort with 7 A/ C rooms and roof top restaurant over looking the lake. When we went all the rooms were occupied. With the growing popularity of the place it would be a good idea to increase the number of rooms and also the F&B available the restaurant. Boating facility is also available - Paddle boats and motor boats. Warangal A little late from our schedule we reached Warangal, the sec- ond-biggest city after Hyderabad in Telangana late in the evening. Well known for its heritage Warangal has been included in the scheme of Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) along with eleven other cities of India. We then proceeded _ ' to Warangal Fort which stretches across an area of 19 km and is enclosed within 45 intricately designed towers and has a beautiful tem— ple, the Swayambhu Bhudevi Alayam, the 4 Keerthi Tho- ranams. The fort was destroyed by many invaders over cen- ‘ turies and today only . i " v . ' . ' ‘ . remnants can be , ’ I‘ seen. The fort used L 5 ~ to have three layers of protection. The Sound & Light Show at Warangal fort reveals the history of great rulers of Kakatiya dynasty. Unfortunately there was hardly any paid crowd and I was informed that many tourists as well as locals can watch the show from afar as the walls are not very high. We then went to the Bhadrakali Temple which was built in 625 by King Pulakesi II of the Chalukya dynasty. Here resides god- dess Bhadrakali. Lake Bhadrakali with a radius of 2.5 km is an artificial water body near the temple surrounded with natural hills and rock formations. Our next halt was the famous Thousand Pillar Temple which was constructed under the orders of Rudradeva of the Kakatiya dynasty in 1163 AD in Chalukyan style of temple architecture. This temple is in shape of star and contains three shrines dedicat- ed to Shiva, Vishnu and Surya. There is a rock carved Nandi which connects these three shrines. The exterior wall of the tem- ple, the celling slabs and the four central pillars of the navarangal mandap are decorated with finely carved sculptures of the deities. There are one thousand pillars in the building and the temple, but no pillar obstructs a person in any point of the temple to see the god in the other temple. For night halt we went to Haritha Hotel Kakatiya, Warangal. With 54 rooms it’s in the center of the city. It has a gym and a big Global Destinations restaurant of 110 covers. But it’s the banqueting space that caught my attention. Spread across 2.8 acres with an excellent lawn and a pillerless banquet hall that can accommodate 350 people it’s an ideal venue for weddings, product launches, fashion shows and conferences. The day was hectic as we covered 323 kms. Kondagattu In the moming we proceeded to Kondagattu that has a temple I 5 . 3 r ? ~.*’. 277-’ _ ‘ r A i A . Situated amidst hills, valleys and water springs Kondagattu is blessed by nature and very scenic. Located in the hillock of Kondagattu villages it is 35 Kms from Karimnagar town. According to local about 300 years ago a cat- tle graze Singam Sanjeevudu found an illuminating idol of riff‘? -.. Anjaneya and built a small temple for Lord Anjaneya. Later Krishna Rao Deshmukh renovated the temple and endowed some land to it. Located at the foothills of the temple is the Haritha resort with 10 rooms — 5 A/ C and very reasonably priced. The restaurant has good food and the buttermilk is quite tasty. The restaurant has 40 covers. Dharmapuri Our next halt was Dharrnapuri where the 13th century Sri Lak- shmi Narsimha Swamy temple is located. The road once you enter the town is so-so and in some places very narrow. This 15th century temple town is on the banks of River Godavari and 78 Kms from Karimnagar. According to the legend king Bali Verma performed the Dharma Devta Yagna here. He wanted all his peo- ple to follow and live according to Dharma. Hence this village got Mar — Apr 2015 fill?
  23. 23. its name as Dharmapuri. The temple has two very different idols of the lord Narasimha Swamy. The oldest of these idols is called “pata Narasimha Swamy” which means the older Narasimha Swamy and the temple that was established later is called “kotha Narasimha Swamy” which means the new one. The temple for Yamadharma Raja, the God of death is also on the premises (only two such temples exist in the world). It’s crowded on Saturdays and devotees perform special poojas believing that they will be relieved from all the sufferings. According to the temple authorities on an average yearly about 30,000 to 40,000 devotees visit the temple. For devotees there are 58 rooms inside and surrounding the temple run by various trusts. Dharrnapuri is also an ancient seat of leaming languages, litera- ture, dance and music. Jannaram and Kawal wildlife sanctuary After another long joumey we reached Jannaram, a small vil- lage known for the Kawal wildlife sanctuary (around 250 kilome- ters from Hyderabad). We went to the Haritha resort which is again a nice place with 11 cottages — 8 A/ C plus a 8 bed dormito- ry. The have a 40 cover restaurant with good south Indian food. There are also two safari jeeps for those who want to visit the sanctuary. After a late lunch we decided to go on a jeep safari. Spread over an area of 893 km2 this sanctuary was declared as Tiger Reserve in 2012. The sanctuary is one of the richest Teak forests in the State and we would see it as our jeep crisscrossed the area for over an hour. The Kawal sanctuary houses various animals and several varieties of flora and fauna Mammal species Mar - Apr 2015 I) that have been sighted include tiger, leopard, gaur, cheetal, sam- bar, nilgai, barking deer, chowsingha, sloth bear. Several species of birds & reptiles are also found in the sanctuary. According to the department sources, as per an unofficial count, the Kawal wildlife sanctuary has about 20 tigers. Unfortunately we could not see any tiger. Nirmal paintings and Nizamabad On the way to Nizamabad we stopped at a little town Nirmal, a destination for handicrafts. Nirmal paintings and wooden handi- crafts (named after the town of Nirmal) carry the art and culture of Telangana. The evolution of this Nirmal art and craft can be traced back to old days of Kakatiya dynasty. There is a big com- munity of craftsmen in Nirmal town known as "Nakkash" whose traditional art is to paint scenes from the Indian epics such as Mahabharata and Ramayana. The uniqueness of Nirmal crafts is that only locally available materials are used. These craftsmen utilize indigenous colors that are made from herbs, gums, and minerals. Even the gold found in these paintings is extracted from herbal juices. Continuing our journey late night we reached Nizamabad Haritha hotel. This hotel too has good banqueting space and can be a good option for MICE. The next day early morning we left for Hyderabad concluding my hectic but fruitful trip of Telan- gana. Lot more remains to be seen but that’s for another issue. Global Destinations
  24. 24. “At 2000 feet above Hyderabad, our guests can experience the famed Nizam's hospitality which was once the sole preserve of royalty” , Taj Falaknuma Palace has been ranked as the I number 1 attraction in Hyderabad by tripadvisor readers - with exclamations like “Breathtaking”, “Awesome! l!! ” “Royal Feeling”, “Do not leave HYD without visiting Falaknuma! ” and this in spite of being a hotel. Taj Falaknuma Palace is Hyderabads most iconic hotel and to be the GM of this luxury Palace hotel is without any doubt a privileged position - a position many hoteliers aspire. At just 38 years of age Girish Sehgal as GM of the Taj Falaknuma Palace has taken it to great heights and making it a profitable desti- nation in itself with Bollywood stars, Kings and Princes, Prime Ministers and Presidents, Entre- preneurs and CEOS looking forward to hold shootings, conferences, weddings and recep- tions or just simply to experience the Indian hospitality at its best. During his tenure the hotel has got quite a bit of recognition and awards - Top 10 Palace Hotels in the World 2014 — TripAdvisor; Top five hotels in Asia by the Conde Nast Traveller — Reader's Travel Awards 2014; Hyderabad and Taj Falaknuma Palace were voted among the Top Two destinations in the World by National Geographic 2014; Bestowed with the Gold E award of Excellence and recognized as World's Best Hotel (2014). Girish Sehgal has over 19 years experience in the hospitality industry beginning his career at Leela Kempinski, Mumbai. Over the years he has worked in numerous hotels and top brands spread across 5 countries. Having tasted success early in his career he still remains humble. He is also one of the most immaculately dressed GM that I have come across. Dur- ing the visit to Hyderabad Chandragupta Amritkar had the opportunity to interact with him again. Excerpts Recently one of Bollywoods leading actor had booked the entire hotel for his sisters wedding. How did the event go? It was indeed the wedding of the year covered very closely by both national and international media. The event was flawlessly executed by the team and received great compliments from the hosts and the media for salvaging a rain ravished evening. While Taj Falaknuma Palace was always known for its extraordinary heritage and service, this event surely has given a much wider exposure to not only the Palace but also to destination Hyderabad on the whole. How geared is the hotel with limited inventory to cater to such grand events? While the palace remains an exclusive destination for the most disceming travellers from around the globe, limited room inven- tory does pose a challenge. However, we are lucky to have large lawns and other venues offering the most breath—taking views making this an ideal venue for events from 20-2000 guests of such stature. On the room inventory bit, we are fortunate to have 4 other Taj hotels in the city of Hyderabad collectively offering over 700 rooms for any mega event. Can you throw light on some of the well known guests? While I will not be able to share the names of the guests owing to guest privacy policy, we have done all kinds of events at the Global Destinations palace ranging from hosting very high level birthday and anniver- saries for HNI and Royalties, to high level board meets, state level delegations, high end conferences, to most exclusive and talked after weddings. What are the most distinctive or unique features of the Palace?
