"My son was very sick with a cough and congestion. I was sick also and even was coughing up blood.

I did not ask to the doctor because I saw that when one teen mother asked a police official to bring a little baby of 5 or 6 months to the doctor, he responded by saying why did you come if things were so good in your country. He was yelling this at the girl when he said this. The girl was crying because her baby was so cold and didn’t have enough clothes on.

We were not given sufficient food. The taste of the food was really bad and sometimes the bread was rotten. My baby son did not eat any solid food for the entire 10 days that I was detained in the cold jail cells in Texas."

There were about 15 other people in the first cell with me, including adult women and other children. My son was given a little sweater and I had a long shirt on, but it was not enough in the cold. I was not given a bed in the first cell. My son was not given a bed in this cell either. We had to try to sleep on the concrete floor. We almost did not sleep for the first 3 days in these cells. It was also hard to sleep because U. S. officials were always coming into the room to wake us up. The lights in the cell was turned on the whole time I was in the first cell. My son was very sick with a cough and congestion. I was sick also and even was coughing up blood. 2. 2. 11. After 3 days in the first jail cell, we were brought to another jail cell further away that was so packed with women, girls, and children that at times we could not even lie down on the floor. I stayed in this second cell with my son for 7 days. 12. In the second cell, the temperature was just as cold. We still had to sleep on the floor. 13. My son and I were not able to shower for 10 days straight because there was no shower. We were not allowed to brush our teeth for 10 days straight. We could not change our clothes for the entire time. I had to wear the same underwear for 10 days straight. I was very dirty because of so much time there. 15. My son was sick with a cough for the entire 10 days in the jail cells. 16. I was very worried for the health of my child because I thought he was going to suffocate to death because he was barely able to breath with how much congestion he had. 17. The police officials saw that my son was sick but never did never even said a word to see if he needed medical help. 18. My son started to eat solid food at 7 months and had even started to eat meat before he was arrested by U. S. officials. 19. My son lost a lot of weight in the jail cells. Before being arrested by U. S. officials, he weighed 23 pounds. When he was weighed at the children’s home in he only weighed 15 pounds. The last time he weighed 15 pounds was when he was 2 months old. 20. The doctor in the children's home said he was very thin. 21. I also lost a significant amount of weight. I weighed 100 pounds when I was stopped by border patrol. At the children’s home, I only weighed 92 pounds. I now weigh 112 pounds. 22. There was only one toilet in both cells for every person to use. It was open to everyone could see the person going to the bathroom. E. 24. In the second cell, we were only given water during meals. If we did not drink the water in the time of the meal, we had to wait until the next meal time to eat. There were many times that I was thirsty and I was not allowed to drink any water.
  3. 3. 25. My son and I were treated like trash, like we were not worth anything, but we are humans too. 26. I want the U. S. govemment to treat children like me and my son better than they did because we are humans just like them. 27.
