Bugatti Veyron EB16.4 Super Sport
The Bugatti Veyron EB 16.4 is a mid-engined grand touring car, designed and
developed by the Volkswagen Group (Germany) and manufactured in Molsheim,
France by Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S.
The Super Sport version of the Veyron is the fastest street-legal production car in
the world, with a top speed of 431.072 km/h (267.856 mph) taking back the title
from SSC Ultimate Aero TT as the fastest production time of all time. Although it
is electronically limited to 415 km/h (258 mph) to protect the tyres from
disintegrating. The original version has a top speed of 408.47 km/h (253.81 mph).
The Veyron Super Sport features an engine power increase from the standard 1,001
PS (736 kW; 987 bhp) to 1,200 PS (880 kW; 1,200 bhp) and torque of 1,500 N·m
(1,100 lbf·ft) and a revised aerodynamic package. It was named Car of the Decade
(2000–2009) by the BBC television programme Top Gear. The standard Veyron
won Top Gear's Best Car Driven All Year award in 2005.
The Veyron's chief designer was Hartmut Warkuss, and the exterior was designed
by Jozef Kabaň of Volkswagen, with much of the engineering work being
conducted under the guidance of engineering chief Wolfgang Schreiber. Though
commissioned by Volkswagen, this car is only sold through the Bugatti
manufacturers and cannot be found at any Volkswagen dealer.

Origin of the Car
In 1998, the Volkswagen Group purchased the trademark rights on the former car
manufacturer Bugatti in order to revive the brand. Had a model been especially
popular or highly successful in races, Ettore Bugatti’s customers often pushed the
master to tease out of the engine a few horsepower more for their future car.
Bugatti Automobiles SAS had been in a similar situation when their existing
customers asked the company to not only design their second model optically
differently but also to create a version with a sportier and more extreme driving
experience. The result is a car with a uniquely high performance of 882 kW (1,200
bhp) offering experienced drivers a whole new dimension of excitement, with a
maximum torque of 1,500 Newton metres and a limited top speed of 415 km/h (to
protect the tyres from disintegrating).
Name Origin
The Veyron EB 16.4 is named in honor of Pierre Veyron, a Bugatti development
engineer, test driver and company race driver who, with co-driver Jean-Pierre
Wimille, won the 1939 24 hours of Le Mans while driving a Bugatti. The "EB"
refers to Bugatti founder Ettore Bugatti and the "16.4" refers to the engine's 16
cylinders and 4 turbochargers.

History
Ettore Bugatti was the legendary engineer and designer of the most famous Bugatti
sports cars, the founder of the Bugatti car manufacturing plant, and one of the
forefathers of modern automobile engineering.From the very beginning, Bugatti’s
unique constructions and high aesthetic standards have enthralled the public and
spawned a virtually boundless passion in those fortunate enough to own such
automotive works of art.
The Bugatti company and, most particularly, the company’s founder Ettore Bugatti
are venerable fixtures in the world of automobile engineering.
The origins of this outstanding company’s history are intrinsically tied to that
classic automotive era of the interwar years, and the image of Bugatti in this period
was influenced most significantly by the sport of motor racing. Not only the
company drivers but numerous amateurs, too, secured hundreds of Bugatti
victories. The private drivers, however, were of a kind that would be unimaginable
in modern-day Formula 1 races. Many industrialists, affluent publishers, and a
large number of noblemen cultivated motor racing as a costly and very hazardous
hobby.
It was Ettore Bugatti, who at the beginning of the last century, first recognized the
advantages of a 16 cylinder engine and then built one. Modelled after an early
airplane engine, he combined two 8-cylinder blocks into a twin engine with, for
those times, an astounding 250 horse power. In 1928, the first Bugatti racing cars
with 16 cylinders rolled out of the workshops.
At the beginning of the second automobile century, it was again Bugatti, who has
breathed life into 16 cylinder technology taking advantage of today’s high-tech
engineering. The Veyron was designed by Hartmut Warkuss of Volkswagen.
Once again, an extraordinary automobile is manufactured in Molsheim, Alsace –
an automobile that can only be described in superlative terms.
The development of the Veyron 16.4*) is one of the key milestones of 21st-century
automotive engineering. Volkswagen CEO Ferdinand Piëch made high demands:
the designers were to revive the heritage of Ettore Bugatti with this new super
sports car. Equally challenging were the impressive technical requirements the
exceptional serial production vehicle had to meet: a top speed above 400 km/h and

882 kW (1,200 HP). A truly formidable challenge. Yet the Veyron 16.4 unites the
dichotomy of elegant form and high-tech function, of grace and power, aesthetics
and safety in perfect harmony.
The Veyron’s exterior styling unobtrusively yet unmistakably quotes classic
Bugatti design elements while defining its very own, modern style. Innovations for
top performance, high acceleration capacity, and an extensive security system are
signature elements of this super sports car. Ettore Bugatti occasionally made
technical compromises for the sake of aesthetic integrity. This is the only tradition
that was broken in the development of the Veyron 16.4.
Design Development
Head of Design Hartmut Warkuss and his team were faced with a Herculean task.
They were to design a car that combined its classic heritage and state-of-the-art
modernism in a unique and unmatched way. A serial production vehicle that
continued a great tradition. A sports car worthy of the name Bugatti.
The designers created the Veyron 16.4*), taking on a legend and mastering the
challenge in one fell swoop: the final version of the serial production vehicle is
almost identical to the first design draft. This indicates the high quality of the
concept as well as the designer’s thoroughly responsible attitude and full
intellectual grasp of the design objective. In order to transport the heritage of
Ettore Bugatti to the present, the designers had to immerse themselves in the
company’s history and to completely internalize the traditional brand values. That
is the basis on which a feeling for the look and shape of the legendary brand can
evolve. Every detail of this car, and not just its use of advanced motor sport
technology, harks back to the pioneering spirit of company founder Ettore Bugatti.
The design sketch, however, is only the very first step. Turning a design into
reality is by far the greater challenge. The challenge was taken, and the result is
this automobile with its typical racecar mid-engine.
This brilliant designer came from a family of artists, and his philosophy was
always to combine mechanical perfection and exterior beauty. This ethos remains
alive and well at the company, and the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport*) is
wholly unmistakeable, with every external modification serving to coax greater
performance from the car.

The Super Sport’s flat, elongated silhouette is immediately recognisable. The 16-
cylinder engine gets its air from two NACA ducts set into the roof, rather than
from scoops above the engine. The front air intakes have been expanded and
reshaped, with the lower one extending elegantly around the sides to the wheel
arch. The revised back looks sportier due to the double diffuser and a centrally
arranged exhaust system. A car that is made unique by its harmony, self-
containment, and elegance. A car that exudes power, warmth, and charisma, taking
an unchallenged position far beyond the mediocre. For the Veyron rises above any
existing categories and classifications. It is not an Italian sports car, nor a British or
French one. It is a Bugatti.
Technology Development
The technical requirements that the Veyron 16.4*) developers had to meet could
not have been any more complex.
They were to create a car like none before. Their declared objective was a serial
production vehicle able to hold its own on the Formula 1 racetrack and provide a
relaxed, yet exciting driving experience in everyday traffic.
The Veyron 16.4 exceeds these expectations with its 736 KW (1,001-HP) engine,
its ability to reach a velocity of 400 km/h at the push of the gas pedal, and its
racecar safety concept. This unmatched feat was made possible by a series of
technical innovations never before built into a serial production vehicle. Many of
the Veyron’s parts were previously unavailable on the world market: before the
Veyron was created, the maximum capacity of available fuel pumps sufficed only
for 650 HP. The world’s very first seven-gear direct-shift transmission was merely
a concept. The central hydraulic system is yet another innovation: it supports the
car’s brake and steering system, controls the rear spoiler and diffuser, and regulates
the ground clearance, which varies from 65 to 125 mm, depending on the velocity.
One central requirement governed the development of all new parts: they had to
work perfectly together. And at Bugatti, perfection is an absolute without
compromises.
Top velocities are always available at the push of the Veyron’s pedal. One decisive
speed factor is the car’s aerodynamics – the perfect balance of drag, propulsion,
and downforce. Again and again, the Bugatti engineers varied minute details of the
car’s exterior shape, particularly the front and rear spoilers, until finally, there

wasn’t a wind tunnel in the world that could simulate the necessary speed, and the
car had to go back on the racetrack for each further detail test.
The 882kW (1,200 bhp) Super Sport*) is a consequent further development of the
classic exclusive 736 kW (1.001 bhp) Bugatti Veyron 16.4, launched in 2005. This
model offers a stunning set of specifications, such as the twin clutch gearbox with
seven speeds, the extraordinarily precise driving performance in bends and
excellent stability when braking and accelerating.
Continuous work in extreme performance ranges lead to constantly new
conclusions, which enabled the engineers at Bugatti to develop the Veyron into a
direction in which the driver can reach new dimensions. Every modification is
designed to produce an even more powerful car for an agile ride. Four enlarged
turbochargers and bigger intercoolers have been used to boost the power of the 16-
cylinder engine, and the chassis has been extensively redesigned to maintain safety
at extreme speed. Thanks to slightly raised main-spring-rate, stronger stiffer Anti-
Roll-bars, and new shock absorbers with a complex architecture originally
developed for racing cars. This gives noticeably more precise control of the wheels
and the car as a whole. With lateral acceleration of up to 1.4 G and improved
interaction between the tyres and the intelligent all-wheel drive system, the Super
Sport offers perfect handling and even more powerful acceleration of 1.500
Newton metres on corner exits.
The body has been fine-tuned to improve aerodynamic efficiency and maintain
perfect balance in every situation, while the new fibre structure of the all-carbon
monocoque ensures maximum torsion rigidity and passive safety – at reduced
weight. The skin is made entirely of carbon-fibre composites, and the new Bugatti
Veyron 16.4 Super Sport is available in 100 percent clear-lacquered exposed
carbon on request.
Aerodynamics
The biggest challenge in creating the Veyron was the aerodynamics, i.e. how to
keep above 400-km/h supercar on the road. The smallest modifications of the
external form, especially at the front and rear spoilers, will be felt in terms of drag
and drift behaviour. The aerodynamic forces increase exponentially with

higher speeds. Doubling the speed from 100 km/h to 200km/h, mean,
consequently, a multiplication factor of four of the aerodynamic forces.
Through increased drift forces, higher wheel loads can be achieved, meaning that a
greater deal of forces may be transferred though the tires. Free stream velocity
does not fail under any circumstances and the drift remains high at all instances,
ensuring excellent driving performance of the Veyron.
Important share in the development work has been taken up by the frontal air
intake openings and airflow below the vehicle. The flat under body between the
wheel axles is advantageous for the air flow. the front spoiler serves to cause a
suction effect, the so called ground effect. The Bugatti is extremely wide for its
height. The underside of the Veyron, like an F-1 car, is streamlined and venturi-
shaped to increase down force with the floor pan shaped to act as a diffuser to
generate down force.
The optically most noticeable aerodynamic component, the tail wing, was
perfected inside the wind tunnel. The Bugatti Veyron's tail wing creates down
force at high speeds to increase down force and keep the car glued to the road.
Engine (W16 Engine)
The Veyron Super Sport features an 8.0 litre, quad-turbocharged, 16 cylinder
piston internal combustion engine in a W configuration, equivalent to two narrow
angle V-8 engines. Each cylinder has four valves for a total of sixty four, but the

narrow staggered V8 configuration allows two overhead camshafts to drive two
banks of cylinders so only four camshafts are needed. The engine is fed by four
turbochargers and displaces 7,993 cubic centimetres (487.8 cu in), with a square 86
by 86 mm (3.4 by 3.4 in) bore and stroke. The Bugatti Veyron Super Sport
powered by 16-cylinder 8.0L engine produces 1200 horsepower for a top speed of
268mph.
Bugatti did two things to create a compact engine capable of producing 1200 hp.
The first thing Bugatti engineers did, both to keep the RPM redline high and to
lower lag time when you press the accelerator, was to double the number of
cylinders. The Bugatti has a very rare 16-cylinder engine. There are two easy ways
to create a 16-cylinder engine:
 One way would be to put two V8 engines in-line with each other i.e an
Asymmetric Design of V8 engine. You connect the output shaft of the two
V-8s together.
 Another would be to put two in-line 8-cylinder engines beside one another
i.e a Symmetric Design of V8 engine.
For the Veyron, Bugatti chose a much more challenging path. Essentially, Bugatti
merged two narrow angled(15 degrees) asymmetric configuration V-8 engines with
a displacement of 8.0L onto one another inclined at an angle of 72degrees, and
then let both of them share the same crankshaft. This configuration creates the W-
16 engine found in the Veyron. The two V's create a W.
This asymmetric configuration in the V8 engine enable the exhaust valves in both
bank remains in a distance accessible by a common camshaft, as one camshaft
controls the intake valves of first bank as well as the other bank. Similarly, another
camshaft controls the exhaust valves in second bank and first bank. In other words,
every cylinder is served by both camshafts, hence a twin-cam engine. This results
in the total of four camshafts in a W16 engine.
In fact, the distance is the same as in intake valves or cam set. This ensure equal
efficiency of intake and exhaust. Without the narrow angle and the asymmetric
configuration, the share of camshaft would have been impossible.
 The second and most obvious thing is turbocharging.

Turbo-Chargers
Through the working principle of Turbochargers one easy way to make an engine
more powerful without making the engine bigger is to stuff more air into the
cylinders on each intake stroke. Turbochargers do that. A turbo pressurizes the air
coming into the cylinder so the cylinder can hold more air.
If you stuff twice as much air in each cylinder, you can burn twice as much
gasoline. In reality, it's not quite a perfect ratio like that, but you get the idea. The
Bugatti uses a maximum turbo boost of 18 PSI to double the output power of its
engine. Therefore, turbocharging allows Bugatti to cut the size of the engine from
16 liters back down to a more manageable 8 liters.
To generate that much air pressure, the Bugatti requires four separate
turbochargers arranged around the engine.

Special Features:
The special features of the Bugatti W-16 engine are amazing.
• The engine has four valves per cylinder, for a total of 64 valves.
• It has a dry sump lubrication system borrowed from Formula 1 race cars,
along with an intricate internal oil path to ensure proper lubrication and cooling
within the 16 cylinders.
• It has electronically controlled, continuously variable cam timing to create
optimal performance at different engine rpm settings.
• It has a massive radiator to deal with all of the waste heat that burning 1.33
gallons of gasoline per minute can generate.

• 3 heat exchangers for the air-to-liquid intercoolers.

It has a drag coefficient of 0.41 (normal condition) and 0.36 (after lowering to the
ground), and a frontal area of 2.07 square metres (22.3 sq. ft.). This gives it a drag
area – the combination of drag coefficient and frontal area, represented as CdA –
of 0.74 m2 (8.0 sq. ft.).

The Veyron Super Sport features an engine power increase from the standard 1,001
horsepower (736 kW; 987 bhp) to 1,200 horsepower (883 kW; 1,184 bhp) and
torque of 1,500 Nm (1,100 ft-lb) and a revised aerodynamic package.
In order to harness all of this horsepower and torque, you need an amazing
transmission...
Transmission:
The transmission is unique, in particular because it has to produce about twice as
much torque as any previous sports-car transmission. The transmission is a dual-
clutch, direct-sequential shift gearbox automatic or computer-controlled with seven
gear ratios. It is paddle-driven with magnesium paddles behind the steering wheel
and computer-controlled shifting system with a shift time of less than 150
milliseconds, built by Ricardo of England rather than Borg-Warner, who designed
the six speed DSG used in the mainstream Volkswagen Group marques.
With the two separate transmission shafts, two gears can be engaged at the same
time, to shift and what a car does is to switch clutches. The Double clutches
transmission concept is why the Bugatti Veyron can change its gears so fast. The
car can be accelerating in one gear and already have the next gear ready to go. The
Veyron can be driven in either semi- or fully automatic mode. It is not an
automatic transmission but a unique form of manual transmission, which is not just
fast but also incredibly strong and it needs to be to handle the extreme forces
generating from 1,200hp. A replacement transmission for the Veyron costs just
over US$120,000.[13] It also has permanent All-Wheel Drive using the Haldex
Traction system.
This automatic or computer-controlled system is identical to the sort of system
found in a Formula 1 car or a Champ car. There is no clutch pedal or shift lever for
the driver to operate, the computer controls the clutch disks as well as the actual
shifting. The computer is able to shift gears in 0.2 seconds.
It would be almost impossible for all of the torque available from the W-16 engine
to flow out to just two wheels without constant wheel-spin. Therefore, the Veyron
has full-time all-wheel drive. By applying the engine's power to all four wheels

through a computer-controlled traction-control system, the car is able to harness all
of the engine's horsepower, even at full acceleration.

How much gas is that?
• 1,200 horsepower is equivalent to roughly 3.12 billion joules per hour. A
gallon (3.8 litters) of gasoline contains 132 million joules, so a 1,200-hp engine has
to be able to burn just over 24 gallons of gasoline per hour.
• However, car engines are only about one-quarter efficient -- three quarters of
the gasoline's energy escapes as heat rather than as power to the wheels. So the
engine actually has to be able to burn at least 80 gallons per hour, or 1.33 gallons
(5 litters) per minute.
• Let's convert over to metric. Gasoline requires about 14.7 kilograms of air to
burn 1 kilogram of gas. Air weights 1.222 kilograms per cubic meter at sea level.
A gallon of gasoline weighs 2.84 kilograms. So the engine has to be able to process
2.84*1.33*14.7 kilograms of air per minute, or roughly 45 cubic meters of air per
minute. That's 45,000 litters of air per minute.
• If a V-8 engine is turning at 6,000 rpm, it can inhale a total of 24,000
cylinders' full of air per minute. If it needs to inhale 45,000 litters of air per minute,
it works out to roughly 2 litres per cylinder-full. That’s a 16-liter engine.
Fuel System:
No conventional fuel pump could pump enough gas to saturate the 1200
horsepower engine at full throttle. The Veyron now has the world's most powerful
fuel pump.A total of 64 valves control the inlet and exhaust functions.

The fuel is injected via electro-magnetic injection valves directly into the
combustion chambers on the principle of FSI (fuel stratified injection), which is
highly efficient and reduces emissions. This process makes it possible to precisely
define the moments at which fuel is introduced in the power stroke of each
cylinder and the time needed for the petrol and air to mix.
After combustion, a layer of insulating air remains between the ignited mixture and
the cylinder wall. This cuts the amount of heat lost to the engine block and
increases the Veyron engine's operating efficiency. In stratified charge operation,
incidentally, we achieve lambda values of up to 4.0 related to the combustion
chamber as a whole. This is essential if fuel consumption is to be reduced at low
and medium engine speeds.
At full load, the fuel in injected synchronously with the air intake phase. This fills
the combustion chamber homogeneously. Here again, this produces a definite
reduction in fuel consumption together with higher power-output and torque
figures than would be possible indirect fuel injection.
This has the advantages of reducing the tendency to knock as a result of direct fuel
injection into the combustion chamber and the resulting internal cooling effect. In
addition, the engine is capable of operating at a higher compression ratio.
The Veyron has a common rail injection system and a single-piston injection
pump. Unlike Audi engines with fuel injection into the intake port, in Veyron each
cylinder head has four instead of five valves per cylinder. This is essential in order
to provide space for the injector in the combustion chamber.
A two-stage intake pipe is used, with two length settings for use at higher and
lower engine speeds. A continuously variable electro-hydraulic camshaft varies the
inlet and outlet valve opening times as required. Compared with an engine with the
same output and indirect injection, a fuel saving of up to 15 % is thus possible.
Cooling System:
For its 1200 hp propulsion power, the Veyron’s system demands approximately
2400 hp to be additionally generated as heat energy during combustion. i.e. the
total energy of the amount of fuel burnt excluding that converted into mechanical

energy. It is of great priority to carry away and dispose this unwanted heat as in
any other engine. To do this, the Bugatti engine has two water circuits.
The larger of the two has a capacity of 40 liters of cooling water. It has three
coolers in the front section of the car, to keep the engine at operating temperature.
The most visually prominent, very large air inlets are provided at the front end.
Those are, to ensure optimum cooling of the engine and the brakes.
The second circuit, called the low-temperature system, has a separate water pump
and contains 15 liters of cooling water. These are used to cool, by up to 130
degrees, the charged air, heated during compression in the turbochargers, in two
heat exchangers mounted on the cylinder heads, and hence act as two intercoolers.
The cooled, charged air then passes through two ―air manifolds‖ into the
combustion chamber, which it then leaves as exhaust gas at approximately 1,100
degrees. It then passes through the turbines of the exhaust gas turbochargers. This
causes the exhaust gas to expand, so that it is cooled by up to about 150 degrees, is
then cleaned in the catalyzer and exhausted.
After the engine is shut off, the spoiler lifts horizontally to about 20cm to help
warm air escape the engine bay.
There are two snorkel-like devices or air snorkels, one on either side of the engine,
on the roof of the car.
Exhaust:
Titanium exhaust has four tailpipes: two in the central outlet, two in the diffusers.
On the exhaust side of the Veyron’s engine we can see one of the fundamental
elements needed for efficient exhaust emission control, the exhaust gas

recirculation system. This operates more efficiently than previous systems, and
diverts up to 30 % of the exhaust gas back to the engine's combustion chambers.
Two catalytic converters are provided for exhaust emission control: a multi-stage
three-way converter, and a NOx storage-type converter.
The NOx storage converter has been specially designed to suit the needs of a
direct injection engine, and has a NOx sensor installed at the discharge end. It is a
well-known fact that the conventional three-way catalytic converter is unable to
break down oxides of nitrogen sufficiently in the engine's lean-burn phase; for this,
the composition of the exhaust gas must be stoichiometric.
The storage-type converter is controlled by a mapped operating characteristic and
by temperature. When the converter is saturated, the engine's mixture is enriched
for a short time. This raises the temperature of the exhaust gas, so that the barium
molecules in the converter release the oxides of nitrogen, which are then converted
into nitrogen. The frequency of this enrichment depends of course on the engine's
operating conditions, but normally averages only a few seconds in each minute of
operation.
Tyres:
Even the tires for the Veyron are unique. They're specially designed by Michelin to
handle the stress of driving at 431 kmph. The tires need to be sticky like a race car
and able to handle 1.4 G's on the skid pad. However, they also need to last longer
than the 70 or so miles of a typical race tire.
Michelin therefore created completely new tires to handle the Veyron's unique
requirements. In the rear, the tires are 14.4 inches (36.6 cm) wide. Specifically, the
tires measure 245/690 R 520 A front and 365/710 R 540 A rear, where 245 and
365 are the width in millimetres (9.5 and 14.4 inches respectively). The rims are
520 mm and 540 mm in diameter (approximately 20 inches). These tires, in other
words, are massive -- the rears are the widest ever produced for a passenger car.
The tires use the Michelin PAX system. Their pressure is monitored automatically,
and they can run flat for approximately 125 miles (201 km) at 50 mph (80 kmph).
According to Michelin, the run-flat detection system "plays an integral role in
active safety in PAX System. Its role is to inform you of a loss of pressure, either
gradual or sudden." Once warned of an air leak by the PAX system, you can reduce
your speed and head toward a tire repair centre.

For years, the Bugatti engineers had worked diligently in order to push the 400
km/h boundary. No wind tunnel can simulate this velocity, which is why after each
of a long series of improvements, the different ground clearance levels and the
modifications of the rear fenders, spoiler and underbody were tested separately on

high-speed test ranges. This ambition and diligence paid off, as the official speed
measurement proves.
The Veyron’s high velocity is due to the perfect combination of engine technology,
consistent lightweight construction, specially developed tires, and the complex
balance of propulsion and downforce. For not only the aerodynamic drag is a
crucial factor at very high speeds, but also the precise adjustment of the downforce
that holds the car to the road surface. And in addition to all this, the Veyron
production vehicle meets the highest safety, reliability and maneuverability
standards of even the most discerning drivers.
To create the optimum aerodynamics, the Bugatti engineers developed three
configuration modes. In standard mode, used for speeds up to 220 km/h, the rear
spoiler system is completely retracted. In handling mode, used at higher velocities,
the vehicles nose is pulled down and the monumental rear spoiler deployed. This
produces an additional 350 kg of downforce without compromising the Veyron’s
exceptional turn dynamics. And then there is the top speed mode for velocities
beyond 375 km/h, which is activated before the engine is started. At top speed
mode the front diffuser flaps are shut to make the underbody absolutely level, and
the spoiler is completely aligned with the chassis, forming a tearing edge – thus,
the Veyron is perfectly adapted for top velocities. The downforce is reduced to
minimize the strain on the tires, which is already considerable. The car is held
down on the road by its own weight and the downforce. The Veyron starts
immediately at top speed mode, allowing only for a limited turn of the steering
wheel. As soon as the driver brakes, the Veyron automatically switches to handling
mode. But those who dare to accelerate consistently on a long, straight road will
experience the power of the fastest production vehicle of all times.
At top speed the engine consumes 45,000 litres (9,900 imp gal) of air per minute
(as much as a human breathes in four days). The Veyron has the highest top speed
of any street legal production car and the fact is that the Veyron was very
controlled, and only wobbled a tiny-bit when the air-brake deployed.
On 4 July 2010, Bugatti's official test driver Pierre Henri Raphael piloted the Super
Sport edition and was clocked at an average of 431.072 km/h (267.856 mph) on the
same track, taking back the title from the SSC Ultimate Aero TT as the fastest

production vehicle of all time. The 431.072 km/h mark was reached by averaging
the Super Sport's two test runs, the first reaching 427.93 km/h (265.90 mph) and
the second 434.20 km/h (269.80 mph).
When the car reaches 220 km/h (140 mph), hydraulics lower the car until it has a
ground clearance of about 9 cm (3.5 in). At the same time, the wing and spoiler
deploy. In this handling mode the wing provides 3,425 N (770 lb.) of down force,
holding the car to the road
For top speed mode the driver must, while at rest, toggle a special top speed key to
the left of the driver's seat. A checklist then establishes whether the car and its
driver are ready to attempt to reach 431 km/h (253 mph). If so, the rear spoiler
retracts, the front air diffusers shut, and normal 12.5 cm (4.9 in) ground clearance
drops to 6.5 cm (2.6 in).
Acceleration
Acceleration with the Veyron*) means pure delight without involuntarily nodding
heads. The automobile uses the same launch control technology as Formula 1
racing cars to reach maximum traction force from first to seventh gear and up to
400 km/h maximum speed.
The Veyron’s electronically controlled acceleration takes the car from standstill
position beyond the 400 km/h threshold in less than one minute. Just activate
launch control, engage gear, control the steering wheel, place your left foot on the
brake, and keep your right foot on full throttle. If you release the brakes swiftly,
you will accelerate on a par with veritable Formula 1 cars.
The mighty, 882 KW (1,200 hp) sixteen-cylinder four-wheel drive can be felt and
driven through a wide spectrum of revolutions per minute. Constant 250 km/h
require only 270-280 of the Veyron’s horsepower. More than 700 HP are
continuously ―on standby‖ for quick and fast interludes. In other words: at 1,000
r.p.m., only slightly above idling, the Veyron has 730 Newton meter torque
available. Between 3000 and 5000 r.p.m., 1500 Newton meter torque are
permanently accessible. No other production vehicle has ever offered comparable

Deceleration
There is one thing the Veyron 16.4*) does even faster than accelerating: braking.
The sports car exploits the full range of available technological potential to allow
for ultra-fast deceleration. It takes less than 5 seconds to get from 0 to 100 km and
back to a complete standstill. In theory, that is, for such a feat would require the
driver to react with nearly superhuman speed. The whole braking process takes no
more than 31.4 meters or 2.3 seconds – that is less than the car needs to get from 0
to 100 km. And even the 400-to-0-km/h deceleration is a matter of less than 10
seconds.
Made of high-tech carbon, ceramic, and titanium materials, the brake system
guarantees consistently high friction values and optimum cooling. Intelligent
carbon-ceramic brake discs with interior ventilation, eight-piston monoblock
caliper units in the front, and six-piston caliper units in the rear ensure the
necessary driving agility on a par with professional racecars. The rear spoiler
serves as an additional air brake at speeds beyond 200 km/h. Activated by the
brake pedal, the spoiler shoots up and is deployed at a 55-degree angle in less than

From the initial concept to the design and the selection of materials, the Bugatti
engineers tapped the full potential of their considerable expertise to ensure that this

car is, indeed, a lightweight. Titanium, carbon, magnesium, and aluminum – each
part of the Veyron 16.4 is made of the material with the lowest weight and the
highest level of functionality. The titanium piston rods save approx. 4 kg of
weight, the titanium screws 3.5 kg, and the magnesium valve caps another 2 kg. By
reducing the wheelbase, the original weight was reduced by about a third, and the
titanium exhaust system – another Veyron 16.4 first – with its wafer-thin layer of
titanium aluminite saves yet another 17 kg. These combined efforts capped the
Veyron 16.4’s weight at a compact 1,888 kg. Add the car’s high-powered
performance and unmatched speed, and you have a uniquely fast and nimble super
sports car.
Optimum protection is guaranteed by the car’s carbon monocoque construction:
weighing only 110 kg, the survival cell withstands enormous crash impact forces.
This principle is comparable to that used in the Formula 1 world, where drivers
usually emerge uninjured from their cars even after severe accidents. The
maximum impact force reduction is mainly due to the frames integrated in the
carbon monocoque. The front part of the monocoque is made of aluminum; the
rear consists of a combination of carbon, stainless steel, and aluminum. The car’s
safety concept, which includes two frontal airbags for the front-seat occupants, is
so sophisticated that additional airbags would be redundant. Crash tests have
shown the Veyron 16.4 to conform to all international safety standards – and to
exceed them. As painful as it was for the engineers to watch their valuable
prototypes hit the test wall, they were always glad to see that the Veyron survived
these maneuvers almost unharmed.

Electronics
The Veyron’s*) central nervous system consists of three data buses –
one for the driveline, one for the convenience functions, and one for the internal
diagnostics system. A total of 26 control devices is connected to these buses. This

digital network comprises the car’s complete intelligence system: from engine
regulation to electric windows; from rear spoiler control to GPS. In place of a
traditional network, Bugatti equipped the Veyron with a lightweight onboard
network also used in aviation technology. This saves 5 kg of weight and also offers
extreme temperature resistance. The hub of this network is the telemetry computer.
It constantly collects all vehicle data, checks them for reliability, and monitors
battery voltage. As soon as the values become critical, the computer automatically
transmits an error report to Bugatti – from anywhere in the world. Whenever
there’s the possibility of a malfunction, there is also perfect service available.
Customers may of course deactivate this option, but they can also intensify the
service level: the Veyron’s GPS data are always accessible in case the car should
go missing. In addition, the Veyron features speech-controlled, hands-free mobile
phone operation with integrated Bluetooth technology. The Bluetooth GPS is
controlled via an exclusive Bugatti PDA. Both systems use the Burmester sound
system for crystal-clear audio output. All visual data are displayed on the rearview
mirror – a feat made possible by the extremely bright LED display placed behind
the semi-transparent mirror glass. The PDA boasts additional useful features:
drivers can use it to access lap times, tire pressure, gas consumption, and key
telemetry data.
Manufacturing
The Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport*) is masterfully manufactured in the new
Atelier in Molsheim, Alsace.
The new production facility is located near the former Bugatti headquarters at
Chateau St. Jean. It was built under the aegis of internationally renowned architect
Gunter Henn. Only a short distance away is the simply designed storage building
that houses the parts and spare parts supplied by top European manufacturers. The
futuristic Atelier workshop has little in common with the completely automated
production facilities of today’s automotive industry. The modern, functional
building is marked by its elliptical layout, calling to mind the shape that Ettore
Bugatti himself favored in his designs – so much so that it is epitomized in the
company logo.

In front of the tall window façade that offers a beautiful view of the Vosges
Mountains, three workstations are set up on the bright, epoxy-coated floor. Eight
carefully selected and highly qualified employees assemble the Veyron piece by
piece in this Spartan environment. No more than one or two vehicles per week are
produced in the Atelier, each one requiring almost three weeks of careful
assembly. The mechanics create the Veyron’s lightweight chassis; the formidable
body is assembled; the 882 kW (1,200 HP) engine, four-wheel drive, and brake
system provide the car’s basic functionality; the electronic control systems,
convenience functions, and sound system disappear beneath the impeccable
surface made of the finest leather and uniformly gleaming aluminum elements. For
the customer, it is a special treat and unforgettable experience to witness the
creation of his very own Veyron here at Molsheim, the venerable birthplace of
Bugatti.
Trial and Testing
A car with such exceptional potential as the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 *) calls for
equally exceptional testing conditions:
repeated switches from the high-speed circuit to city traffic and from the highway
to the racetrack, steep uphill climbs and descents, and every possible curve radius.
The internal tests required top speeds, full-throttle acceleration to up to 350 km/h,
again and again, and repeated full brake maneuvers with a force of 1.3 g. The
Bugatti test engineers drove more than 1,000 km per day, only interrupted by the
necessary service breaks. And then there were the extensive test drives on the
extremely tough Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit, and non-stop autobahn drives.
In addition to these internal tests, the Veyron 16.4 had to pass all official
roadworthiness tests just like any other serial production vehicle for road traffic.
Approval criteria included reliability, stability, fine-tuning of driveline, chassis,
and transmission, as well as the overall condition of the car after 50,000 driven
kilometers. This was rounded off by the thousands of hours the Veyron 16.4’s
engine, drive train, brakes and chassis were inspected on numerous test benches.
Next, the Veyron was exposed to weeks of heat and cold tests at extreme
temperatures ranging from -20°C (-4°F) to 50°C (122°F). The car and its
inexhaustible four-wheel drive braved both the ice and snow of Northern Europe

and the sizzling South African heat. Even in the snow, the Electronic Stability
Program always detects the degree of road grip, adjusting the engine control
systems accordingly. The active rear axle lock not only helps the car take fast
turns, but also ensures non-slip acceleration even in the snow. One particularly
memorable episode occurred when a heavy van with camera equipment got stuck
in a Scandinavian snowdrift – to be pulled out by the Veyron, which mastered this
task like a professional tow truck.

Bugatti Today
In 1998, Volkswagen AG decided to revive the legendary Bugatti automobile
brand, purchasing all trademark rights, and the next year Bugatti Automobile
S.A.S. was founded in Molsheim, Alsace, as a Volkswagen France subsidiary.
As early as 1998, Volkswagen presented its first Bugatti prototype at the Paris
Auto Salon – the Bugatti EB 118, a two-door coupé with 555 HP designed by
Italdesign. It was followed by another Italdesign product, the Bugatti EB 218, a
four-door limousine which was presented at the Geneva Auto Salon in 1999. At the
International Automobile Exhibition in Frankfurt in the fall of that year,
Volkswagen introduced the Bugatti 18.3 Chiron, named after the greatest Bugatti
racecar driver of the interwar era. The Bugatti Veyron*) Concept Car was first
shown at the Tokyo Motor Show. Both the Chiron and the Veyron were developed
by the Volkswagen AG design team led by Hartmut Warkuss.
In 2001, Volkswagen decided to start serial production of the super-sportscar
Veyron, whose official name was ―Veyron 16.4‖. In the fall of 2004, after
renovation of the traditional Bugatti headquarters at Château Saint Jean was
completed and the new assembly studio constructed, Bugatti S.A.S. began
manufacturing the first Veyron. About 80 cars are assembled each year, most of
them being picked up directly in Molsheim by their new owners. This is a pleasure
that customers back in Ettore Bugatti’s days also used to indulge in.
At this point, we don’t know what’s going on with the Bugatti Galibier. Last we
heard, it was being significantly altered because the higher-ups at Bugatti didn’t
like its design, but that’s not important right now.

What’s important now is Bugatti’s recently announced 1,600-horsepower
SuperVeyron – a car that first made headlines a few weeks ago when the French
automaker released some information on it. The latest to come out about the
SuperVeyron is that it will make its world debut next year at the 2013 IAA Motor
Show.
Jens Schulenburg, Bugatti’s chief vehicle engineer, recently told Autocar about the
challenges of building what is essentially the ultimate Veyron. ―The big challenge
will be reducing weight, Schulenburg said. "We are looking at some incredible
technologies, such as wheels made entirely from carbon fiber. We’re considering
hybrids, too.‖
Bugatti is looking at shaving almost 550 pounds off of the Veyron Super Sport’s
body while developing the SuperVeyron. We also expect Bugatti to bore out its
existing 8.0-liter W-16 engine to a 9.6-liter displacement, which will help bump
the SuperVeyron’s output to 1,600 horsepower. These extra ponies will net the
newest Veyron a 1.8-second 0-to-60 mph time and a top speed that’s expected to
reach 288 mph.
Anyone who thought the Bugatti speed legacy was going to quit at 1200 HP may
be in for a big surprise once the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show gets underway.
According to Automobilemag, the French manufacturer is working on a 1600 HP
version of the Veyron and have dubbed it the "SuperVeyron."
The new Bugatti SuperVeyron is supposed to incorporate extensive use of carbon
fiber, shaving off about 550 lbs from the Veyron Super Sport’s total weight of
4052 lbs. Under the hood, Bugatti will place an 8.0-liter (or 9.6-liter) engine that
will deliver an amazing 1600 HP, and a power-to-weight ratio of one kg (2.2
pounds) per hp thanks to the amazing weight loss. With these additions, the new
SuperVeyron will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 1.8 seconds, while top speed will be
raised from the current 259 HP up to an impressive 288 mph.
Next to the extra power, the new supercar will also get new designs for the front
and rear with even more sophisticated active aerodynamics.
