In this Global Kids training led by Amira Fouad and Rik Panganiban, educators will be engaged in hands on activities using social media tools that have educational applications and hear about successful case studies from a variety of educational settings.

A broad term that covers a wide range of tools that combine communications technology, social interaction and the creation of media. It’s about creating stuff, sharing it, and engaging in conversations about it. Explain Social Media & Pros/Cons Social media is something that is increasingly a part of our lives, and the lives of our youth. Today we’re going to review some of those tools, focusing specifically on those used for creativity and self expression, and those used for productivity. After the presentation, we’ll have the opportunity to get some hands on experience with one tool that the group decides is most relevant.

For example, the digital divide by race is now minuscule (96% of white teens are online compared with 92% of black teens) while, perhaps of greater significance, the digital divide by income is decreasing as well (97% of youth in familes earning over $75,000 are online compared with 86% of youth in families earning less than $30,000).

  • Compare the affect of income on content creation, a critical aspect of substantive online participation These numbers help us to back up the arguments that putting youth in front of computers is no longer enough if we want them to be able to fully participate in the workforce, classrooms and civic spaces of our digital age. 
  • A key theme in what teens said motivated them to write was one of “relevance.”  Teens said, in varying ways, that they wanted to be doing things that mattered socially, in their own lives, and had an impact.   • (amira) Let’s start with Blogging. Explain how GK utilizes blogging. Holymeatballs.org if you’d like to check it out. process for self reflection for students public face of the program- the conversation for the young people on publicly sharing their work allow us to get to hear the voice of the practitioners and the students- to check in since we arent in the room
  • (amira) A number of free blogging tools. Explain the spectrum of simplicity and ease vs complexity and customization. (Tumblr and Blogger on the simpler side, wordpress and then movable type on the complexity side.)
  • (amira) Example of Wordpress, notice interface similar to Microsoft Word.
  • (rik) Comics. When it comes to working with youth, this can be a powerful medium, and the tools associated with it are often very easy to use.
  • (rik) Here’s some tools: Comic life (we'll see an example of this in a moment), and it's online correlary Pikistrips.com, both allow you to drag in photos and add on speech and thought bubbles.Bitstrips and Pixton both allow you to create and use existing artistic assets in an online comic creator.

  • (amira) Video is probably one of the most common, and powerful, forms of online media. <start sample video, speak after you've shown a bit> This video was shot by Global Kids teen leaders at our annual conference this past year. They shot almost all of it on the day of, and worked with GK staff to edit and produce it so it could be shown at the end of the conference on the day of.
  • (amira) Low cost recording devices and distribution networks are ubiquitous. Point out that while youtube is most popular and is a great place to have a presence, if you want more control and customization, using blip.tv might or vimeo might be useful. Mention low cost and good quality of flip cameras.
  • (rik) Jaycut is online, iMovie comes preloaded on all macs, Windows Movie Maker on all windows based machines. Much video editing software for basic purposes is very easy to use at this point, with even the new iPhone coming loaded with simple editing functions.
  • (amira) you have probably used maps to get directions or to see where the closest subway is. usually we think of maps as a resource to consult. this is an example of how maps can be created by individuals as a form of expression this is a map of NYC greenmarkets
  • (rik) Wikis! These are free wiki tools. A wiki is a website which anyone can edit. Most people know about Wikipedia, which is an editable encyclopedia, but people use wikis for all sorts of things.
  • (rik) The Voicethread Interface - very simple, allows you to rearrange "slides" by dragging, change a voicethread from public to private, comments on or off. Very versatile tool for self expression, and has clear potentials for training and education purposes. All Voicethreads are embeddable in other sites. And that’s Creativity!
  • (rik) It’s not about the tech, it’s about the orientation to the possibilities it affords. The first time I gave this presentation, there were things in it that I removed for this training, as the tool or service went out of business. Let’s field some questions before we move on to our next activity.
