3 Insights From Mini Trial

 1. 1. Behavior Design: Using Technology to Create Calming Habits
Top 3 Insights
from my
Mini Texting Pilot
on getting Stanfordstudents to
EAT SLOWER!
Stanford University
By: Andrew Martin; Twitter: @amartinSU13
2. 2. Behavior Design: Using Technology to Create Calming Habits
Goal:
Induce Stanford students to perform the simplest behavior possible to induce calm and reduce stress in their regular work day.
Stanford University
By: Andrew Martin; Twitter: @amartinSU13
3. 3. Behavior Design: Using Technology to Create Calming Habits
Pilot:
I texted users to set a timer for 1 hour and to PHYSICALLY EAT for that entire hour. Told them the idea was to enjoy the taste of the food and the company they are with.
After joining, I texted them around dinner time to remind them to set a timer and enjoy the meal. After the pilot, I texted them for feedback.
Stanford University
By: Andrew Martin; Twitter: @amartinSU13
4. 4. Behavior Design: Using Technology to Create Calming Habits
Data / Results:
Texted 18 friends to join pilot
9 said yes (50% conversion rate)
Anecdote: “I did feel that the meals were more enjoyable, I slowed down and put aside my academic stresses”
However, still awaiting rest of results!
Stanford University
By: Andrew Martin; Twitter: @amartinSU13
5. 5. Behavior Design: Using Technology to Create Calming Habits
Top 3 Insights
#1 Running the ENTIRE pilot through SMS was confusing: unsure at times if I replied to every user
#2 Texting people to JOIN was fast and efficient: I received all 9 “yes” replies within 30 minutes
#3 Texting people asking for FEEDBACK was slow & inefficient: I only received 1 reply in 12 hours
Stanford University
By: Andrew Martin; Twitter: @amartinSU13
