  3. 3. What is research? • scholarly or scientific investigation or inquiry • to study (something) thoroughly. • research is a way of finding out answers to questions. (Mackey and Gass, 2005, p.1) 3

  5. 5. any piece of research will have three core components: “(1) a question, problem or hypothesis, (2) data, (3) analysis and interpretation of data” Nunan in Burns, 2010, p.11 5

  7. 7. Classroom research • Research centered on the classroom • it simply tries to investigate what actually happens inside the classroom (Allwright and Bailey, 2006, p.2) 7
  8. 8. Example • How does teacher respond to students’ errors in pronunciation? • What kinds of reinforcement are applied by teacher in teaching learning process? • How is teacher’ talks in questioning students? 8

Action Research • “Action research is a process of systematic reflection, enquiry and action carried out by individuals about their own professional practice” (Frost, 2002, p. 25). • “Educational action research is an enquiry which is carried out in order to understand, to evaluate and then to change, in order to improve some educational practice’ (Bassey, 1998, p. 93). (In Costello, 2007, p.5) 9
  10. 10. How is AR different from other research? Denscombe (1998) suggests four characteristics: 1. its practical nature; 2. its focus on change; 3. the involvement of a cyclical process; 4. its concern with participation. (in Costello, 2007, p.6) 10
