Company Background
In 1967, Air Southwest was incorporated by Rolling King and Herb Kelleher. There was only
$500,000 in the bank and their intentions were to only fly in Texas. After battling legal issues, the
Texas Supreme Court ruled in favor of Air Southwest. In 1971, Lamar Muse became president of
Air Southwest and changed the name to Southwest Airlines. It was not until June 1971 that
Southwest began its service between Dallas, Houston and San Antonio with one way tickets costing

Today, Southwest Airlines is considered the world's largest low cost carrier. After just over 44 years
of service, Southwest Airlines has 665 Boeing 737s and employ more than 46,000 people.
Southwest has also expanded outside of Texas, now serving 93 destinations. In 2015, Southwest is
looking to expand even further with destinations in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Belize.
In 2014, it had a record $465 million quarterly net income. Most airlines charge the customer for
anything and everything extra. Southwest Airlines still maintains its loyalty to the customer by
offering low fares and free amenities. It is the only major U.S. carrier that does not charge baggage
fees and change fees. Another perk Southwest offers is that there is no assigned seating. Some
passengers may look at this as a negative because they may get stuck in seating that is not ideal for
them. Also, in 2014, Southwest changed its look and now has a heart emblem on the aircraft as a

The roots for Delta Airlines were formed by Huff Daland Dusters, which was formed in 1924 as a

The economic downturn frightened many plane owners into exiting the aviation industry. Braniff
saw this as opportunity, and significantly increased their fleet by purchasing used aircraft at a
discounted rate. This expansion put the company in financial distress and nearly collapsed.
However, in 1934 Braniff was awarded an air mail route which revived the company by providing
steady income for years to come. The 1930's also brought change in the leadership of Braniff. Tom
Braniff was elected president of the company and Paul Braniff became Executive Vice President.
Also, in 1935 Charles Beard joined the Braniff team as General Traffic Manager. This would prove
to be an important addition in subsequent years. In 1936 Paul Braniff left the company and Mr.
Beard was promoted to Executive Vice President.

With the air mail route secured, the company began to expand even more. By 1936 Braniff had
established its hub in Fort Worth Texas, and expanded its coverage as far north as Chicago and as far
South as Brownsville and Houston Texas. They also moved to expand their fleet by adding 7 DC–2
aircraft to their inventory. With the new and improved aircraft also came another first for Braniff. In

Southwest Airlines was incorporated on March 15, 1967, in Texas as Air Southwest Co. by Rollin
King and Herb Kelleher. At the time, Southwest Airlines had a fleet of three Boeing 737 aircraft
serving Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. Southwest Airlines Founder Herb Kelleher had faith that
by operating within Texas, the airline could escape from federal regulation. According to SWA, on
February 21, 1968, Braniff, Trans–Texas and Continental Airlines attained a provisional restraining
order from a District Court forbidding the Texas Aeronautics Commission (TAC) from delivering
SWA Certificate. On May 13, 1970, the Texas Supreme Court unanimously votes to overturn the
lower courts ' findings and rules in favor of Air Southwest (SWA, History by Date, (1)).
Conclusively, on December 07, 1970, the United States Supreme Court denies appeal by Braniff and
Texas International (TI) of Texas Supreme Court decision (1).
Eventually, Air Southwest Co. changed its name to Southwest Airlines. On that same day, SWA was
offered three 737–200s by Boeing. During 1971, southwest airlines began scheduled flights from

aircraft/employee productivity and minimizing costs by reducing aircraft turnaround time at the
gate, Southwest was able to generate an operating revenue of 17.7 billion dollars and an average

hedging. Fuel hedging is a contractual tool used to mitigate rising fuel costs. Fuel hedging allows

purchasing a fuel call option and the price increases, the company will receive a return that offsets

The culture has been attributed to many of their successes. The airline has won many awards and
accolades throughout their existence. Some were given to them and some were awarded by them for
them. The department of transportation publishes statistics based on certain categories during the
year in relation to air carriers. These statistics include on–time performance, baggage handling and
customer complaints. Southwest ranked number one in all three of these statistics. The company felt
as though they deserved an award for this accomplishment. Instead of waiting for the award to come
they created the award for themselves and named it the triple crown award (Freiberg, Freiberg,

declines. When all of the other airlines were declaring bankruptcy Southwest continued to record a

The Southwest is a leading American air service and is the largest low–priced service provider with
the base in Texas. The airline came to existence in 1976 and its name became Southwest in 1971.
According to an overview in 2014 the company has around 45k employees and around 3.4k flights
are operated each day. Mostly Southwest Airlines uses 737s, except in 1970s and 1980s, when it
rented some 727s from BI airlines. Over the last couple of years southwest is facing certain logistic
issues, which is not only damaging its reputation but also affecting its business strategies (Gittell,
2004).

Southwest Airlines originally started by just servicing the Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio areas in
Texas. Some things that Southwest became known for right off the bat were a frequent miles
program, which allowed the traveler to bank traveler air miles to be latterly used credit for a free
ticket or even some reduced airfare. Southwest also was ranked number one in its customer service
for the fourth consecutive year in a row in 1984. Two years later, Southwest took over Transtar
Airlines and also took over Morris Air in 1994. Some of the airlines that were around when
Southwest started were Braniff, Aloha Airlines, United Airlines, Trans–Texas, and Continental
Airlines. Some of these airline companies started legal action and began and began a long three year
battle to try and keep Southwest Airlines on the ground. However, the U.S. Supreme Court declined
the case on December 7, 1970. What was interesting about this certain event, is that a children's
book, called Gumwrappers and Goggles by Winifred Barnum in 1983, was made from it. The

The stock market crash of 1929 and the subsequent depression would prove to be tough on the
company but would also provide opportunities. The economic downturn frightened many plane
owners into exiting the aviation industry. Braniff saw this as an opportunity, and significantly
increased their fleet by purchasing used aircraft at a discounted rate. This expansion put the
company in financial distress and nearly collapsed. However, in 1934 Braniff was awarded an air
mail route which revived the company by providing steady income for years to come. The 1930's

Fleet Composition
Southwest presently operates 544 Boeing 737’s aircraft, including 737–300 (181), 737–500
(35), 737–700 (338) ( ). In addition, 75% of the aircraft owned or capital leases and the remainder
are operating leases. The future orders Southwest has with Boeing include 104 aircraft orders, 62
options and 54 purchase rights.
The use of Boeing 737 series of aircraft helps Southwest reduce maintenance costs, costs of
replacement parts, and cost of parts inventories. Southwest maintains four maintenance centers:
Dallas Love Field, Houston Hobby, Phoenix Sky Harbor and Chicago Midway.
