  1. 1. What is it?Astrology- A study of thepositions and relationshipsof the sun, moon, stars, andplanets in order to judgetheir influence on humanactions.
  2. 2. Astrology is NOT Astronomy!• Astrology is different than astronomy in that it is not a science. It is based on the belief that the positions of the planets and stars at the moment of a persons birth have an effect on the personality of the person and on some major events in the persons life.• Where as astronomy is a science. It is the study of anything that we can observe in the sky basically from the sun and planets on out.•
  3. 3. What’s the Problem?• According to astrology much can be told about a person and the persons future based on the knowledge of the alignment of planets and stars at the moment of birth.• One problem with astrology is that the materials used to determine the locations of planets and their stars are centuries old. There is no widely accepted evidence that the claims of astrology are true; the claims have not been proven.
  4. 4. History• Astrologers from ancient times have always felt that the patterns of our lives and the patterns of the stars were bound up in some way. The reasoning behind the belief is based on a popular analogy - that God, or the gods, ruled the moon and planets and, by extension, the seasons... and us.• The Romans have handed down many of the familiar astrological signs and symbols we know today. In the 8th century, monks in their monasteries preserved the texts of ancient Rome by copying down the old lore. Astrology was known to have been studied, but most often in secrecy.• The earliest known astrological records date back to Babylon, 1645 BC. Astrologys origins can also be traced to several other locations and cultures, including Egypt, which developed sophisticated timekeeping and calendar science; Greece, where Ptolemy authored influential astrological and astronomical texts; and Rome, where many of the most learned men - - including two emperors -- were astrologers who wrote laws and counseled citizens based on the stars.
  5. 5. How Astrology Was Influential in History• The Egyptian calendar is created based off of the study of Astrology.• Astrology is used to predict the future.• In Egypt, the Great Pyramid of Khufu is constructed following factors based on astronomy.• Solar and lunar eclipses are recorded by the Akkadians.• The four elements of Earth, Fire, Water and Air are introduced into astrology as the 4-fold root of everything by Empedocles of Agrigentum. He theorized that nothing can be created or destroyed, only transformed.• Hippocrates studies the human body using astrological principles to relate the rhythms of the universe.• Three Magi astrologers predict the birth of Christ.• Nicolas Culpepper uses astrology to practice medicine.
  6. 6. Astrological Signs • Astrological signs represent twelve equal segments or divisions of the zodiac. According to astrology, heavenly wonders reflect or govern human activity on the principle of "as above, so below", so that the twelve signs are held to represent twelve basic personality types or characteristics that represent the people born during the days defined.
