4. 4. Enterprise Softphone Adoption “ What % of your IPT users will utilize the following types of devices, in addition to the desktop phone, to access or enhance the capabilities of the IPT system?” Additional Devices Softphone/personal assistant on PC at the desktop Softphone/personal assistant on laptop when you are away from your office Cellphones or smartphones which can display features of the IPT system Wireless IP phones that can connect to the IPT system via wireless LAN % of All Enterprise IPT Users
    5. 5. Network-based Provisioning

Challenge:

Install and configure softphones

Time consuming to manually install and configure each softphone on every computer

Ensuring a consistent and controlled deployment of the softphones is difficult

Solution:

Provision the softphones from the server simplifying the process

Softphones can be pushed out to computers from the Asterisk PBX where versioning can be controlled

    6. 6. Auto-Discovery

Challenge:

Simplify the deployment of the PBX network

Downloading independent versions of the pbx and softphones require extensive configuration to get them to work together

Network specific configurations and IP addresses make presetting this configuration impossible

Solution:

Use DHCP to auto discover the provisioning server

DHCP INFO enables the softphones to auto discover the provisioning server from the DHCP server

Asterisk will respond to DHCP INFO requests with the provisioning server location thereby eliminating any changes required on the network DHCP server.

    7. 7. Authentication and Network-based Directory

Challenge:

Manage user credentials and company directory

Users have to remember multiple user ID’s and passwords to access their windows accounts and VoIP phone account

Each user has to maintain their own address book with company directory information

Solution:

User credentials and company directory information can be stored on a central server

The windows credentials from Active Directory or other LDAP servers can be used to access the provisioning server thereby abstracting the SIP credentials away from the end user

The company directory can be stored on the server so end users can have constant up to date access

    8. 8. License Server

Challenge:

Enable upgraded features and updates on the softphone without requiring a download

New versions of the software become available and are pushed to the end user machines

Softphone features are upgraded but software version has not changed

Solution:

Deploy a license server

Softphones will have to contact the license server to validate license

License will have capability of enabling certain features on the phone

    9. 9. NAT / Firewall Traversal

Challenge:

Endpoints connecting to the PBX from outside of the LAN run into various problems:

NAT’s make the PBX not globally addressable

Some NAT’s are more challenging than others

Firewall can block specific protocols. E.g. sip and/or udp

Solutions:

Application Layer Gateway (ALG)

Near-end NAT and firewall traversal

Session Border Control (SBC)

Far-end NAT traversal

ICE, STUN and TURN

    10. 10. Asterisk + Bria

Challenge:

Deploy a softphone and an IP-PBX that work well together

There are lots of interoperability issues with the different VoIP network elements

Every server and softphone maker follows the “standards” differently

Solution:

Package the leading softphone with the leading PBX to create a tightly coupled VoIP solution

Proven interoperability between Asterisk and CounterPath softphones

Already many deployments with Asterisk and CounterPath softphones

Adding more tightly coupled enterprise features provides an unrivaled enterprise solution

CMC Add-in for Outlook

Softphone integrated with Microsoft Outlook

Provides the same experience as with Microsoft OCS while maintaining PBX platform independence.
