The Enemy Within

 1. 1. AL MA’ROOF LECTURE SERIES Session – II Date: 22.07.2009 Time: 7.00 pm Venue: SRM Central Park, Chennai The Enemy within - Arshad Saleem
 2. 2. In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful The Enemy within “ ?”
 3. 3. In the name of Allah, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful The Enemy within Every Human Being
 4. 4. Whom shall we call Enemy?

Enemy is one who does not want you to achieve your goal.

So, What is the Goal? It is to please Allah. Or In other words to enter Jannah.
 5. 5. Nafs-e-Mutmainna

"O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! "Come back to your Lord well-pleased (yourself) and well-pleasing (unto Him)! "Enter you then among My (honoured) slaves, "And enter you My Paradise!” (Quran-89:27-30)

It is not the satisfaction which man gets when his worldly needs are fulfilled. Because soon after it takes the form of greed. Moreover worldly satisfaction is temporary.

This is the state of satisfaction achieved by the soul after submitting totally to Allah.

 6. 6. In search of enemies.. HUMAN Soul Soil Shaitan Desires Gardens (Jannah) Hell Fire (Jahannum) Asfala safileen Nafs-e- Ammara Struggle Sacrifice Nafs-e-Mutmainna Nafs-e- Lawwama
 7. 7. The Enemies..

Nafs-e-Ammara

Shaitaan (Satan)

Vain Desires

 8. 8. Nafs-e-Ammara

Has property of earth, i.e. it always pulls man downwards.

Moving down is easier compared to moving up.

Three basic acts of Nafs-e-Ammara:

Through shameless and vulgar things, commands to do evil acts.

Through anger and rage, creates conflicts between the people and leads to bloodshed.

Through pride and ego, creates disparity in the society.

 9. 9. How nafs-e-ammara deceives us?

Nafs-e-ammara deceives us in a progressive manner.

Begins with ears and eyes and finally targets private parts.

We speak what we listen – Deaf will also be Dumb.

Eyes make sin by watching immoral things.

Uncontrolled gaze can easily end up with private parts.

Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts). That is purer for them. Verily, Allah is All-Aware of what they do. (Quran 24:30)

 10. 10. A brief (hi)story of Shaitan (Satan) And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire. (Quran 15:27)
 11. 11. A brief (hi)story of Shaitan (Satan) And (remember) when We said to the angels: "Prostrate yourselves before Adam.". And they prostrated except Iblis (Satan), he refused and was proud and was one of the disbelievers (disobedient to Allah). (Quran 38:76)
 12. 12. A brief (hi)story of Shaitan (Satan) [Iblis (Satan)] said: “I am better than he. You created me from fire, and You created him from clay”. (Quran 38:76)
 13. 13. A brief (hi)story of Shaitan (Satan) (Allah) said: "Then, get out from here, for verily, you are Rajim (an outcast or a cursed one).“ "And verily, the curse shall be upon you till the Day of Recompense (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)”. (Quran 15:34-35)
 14. 14. A brief (hi)story of Shaitan (Satan) (Iblis) said: "Because You have sent me astray, surely I will sit in wait against them (human beings) on Your Straight Path. Then I will come to them from before them and behind them, from their right and from their left, and You will not find most of them as thankful ones (i.e. they will not be dutiful to You)“. (Quran 7:16-17)
 15. 15. What does Satan do to us? Then did Satan make them slip from the (garden). (Quran 2:36)
 16. 16. What does Satan do to us? He [Shaitan (Satan)] commands you only what is evil and Fahsha (sinful), and that you should say against Allah what you know not. (Quran 2:169)
 17. 17. What does Satan do to us? Shaitan (Satan) threatens you with poverty … (Quran 2:268)
 18. 18. What does Satan do to us? Shaitan (Satan) verily, sows a state of conflict and disagreements among them. (Quran 17:53)
 19. 19. What does Satan do to us? O you who believe! Intoxicants (all kinds of alcoholic drinks), and gambling, and Al-Ansab , and Al-Azlam (arrows for seeking luck or decision) are an abomination of Shaitan's (Satan) handiwork. So avoid (strictly all) that (abomination) in order that you may be successful. (Quran 05:90)
 20. 20. What does Satan do to us? Surely, Shaitan (Satan) is an enemy to you, so take (treat) him as an enemy. He only invites his Hizb (followers) that they may become the dwellers of the blazing Fire. (Quran 35:6)
 21. 21. Progressive deception of Satan

Satan comes to us as our well wisher. Then slowly takes us step by step towards the evil path.

 22. 22. Vain Desires

And recite (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم ) to them the story of him to whom We gave Our Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.), but he threw them away; so Shaitan (Satan) followed him up, and he became of those who went astray. And had We willed, We would surely have elevated him therewith but he clung to the earth and followed his own vain desire. So his parable is the parable of a dog: if you drive him away, he lolls his tongue out, or if you leave him alone, he (still) lolls his tongue out. Such is the parable of the people who reject Our Ayat (proofs, evidence, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). So relate the stories, perhaps they may reflect. (Quran-7:175-176)

 23. 23. Nafs-e-Lawwama – The enemy’s enemy

This light is received by heights above, so its leap is always upwards

It is divine light which gives cognition of good & bad and virtue & Evil.

This is angelic (spirutual) motive which prompts man to noble deeds.

It accuses the man for evil deeds (Also, known as Self Blaming Soul ):

Before the action

During the course of action and

After completion

 24. 24. Moving towards Jannah

The first step

Destination – Don’t just wish rather resolve it.

Keep it at highest priority

To achieve Jannah or in other words to achieve the state of Nafs-e-Mutmainna we have a two step strategy known as Tazkiya or Self Purification .

1. Weaken the enemies within and

2. Strengthen the friends within

 25. 25. Self Purification

Purification of Knowledge

Cognition of Allah

Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) a practical Quran

Avoiding innovations

Purification of Actions

Purification of Intention (Motives)

Achieving higher level of Imaan

 26. 26. Motives for Actions (Engine of Life)

Necessities

Roti-Kapda-Makaan

Desires

One level ahead of necessities

Lusts

Most prominent desire is sexual.

Passions

Includes Love and sympathy, hatred and enmity, envy and jealousy, heat and cant, anger and revenge and the like.

So, Who is the driver?
 27. 27.

“ Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what you have taught us. Verily, it is You, the All-Knower, the All-Wise”

(Quran-2:32)
