Paris is the capital and
largest city of France. It
is situated on the
river Seine, in northern
France, at the heart of
the Île-de-
France region.

The name Paris derives
from that of it's earliest
inhabitants,
the Gaulish tribe known
as the Parisii.
Paris has many
nicknames, but its most
famous is "La Ville-
Lumière" ("The City of
Light"),

its administrative limits
(the
20 arrondissements),
has a population of
about 2,200,000.
Its metropolitan
area is one of the
largest population
centres in Europe, with
more than 12 million
inhabitants.

The earliest
archaeological signs of
permanent settlements
in the Paris area date
from around 4200 BC.

Climate
Paris has the typical
Western
European oceanic
climate which is affected
by the North Atlantic
Current. Over a year,
Paris' climate can be
described as mild and
moderately wet.
Summer days are usually

on average, mild days
and fresh nights, but are
changing and unstable.
In winter, sunshine is
scarce; days are cold but
generally above freezing
with temperatures
around 7 C (45 F).

Paris is a rich city

France and is one of

the world.
