The historical context of Athens
 In 1400 BC people started living in Athens.
 In 800 BC Athens became a single state of Attica.
The golden age
 The city was in its prime. Many arts were developed.
 The Acropolis's monuments were built.
 Μany exceptional people lived at that time (e.g. Socrates).
The fall off of Athens
 Athens was destroyed after the Peloponnesian War.
Her empire and wealth gone.
 Later on, Athens became part of the Roman Empire
The Turkish occupation
 It lasted 400 years (1453-1821)
 After the Greek War of Independence (1821-1830),
Athens became the capital of Greece (1834)
Athens in 2018 and beyond…
 Athens is a new modern city and the main location for
tourism.
 Neighborhoods for young people entertainment. New
music and cultural scenes.
 Accessibility to all monuments.
 The famous new Acropolis museum as a main tourist
destination.

Acropolis Of Athens
Parthenon
Odeon of
Herodes Atticus
Acropolis of Athens is
located in the centre of the
city in a place which is
called “Plaka”.
- Parthenon is a temple
that was built in the 5th
century by Pheidias and
Kalikratis. It’s the most
famous monument in
Greece because it has
survived after so many
years.
- Odeon of Herodes
Atticus is a stone theatre
structure which was built in
the 2nd century.
- Erechtheion is an ancient
temple dedicated to
Athena and Poseidon.
Erechtheion
Panathenaic Stadium
The Panathenaic
Stadium, also
known as
Kallimarmaro, was
built in 329 BC. In
ancient times, it
was used to
perform a part of
the Panathenaic in
honor of Athena.
In 2004, the
stadium was used
for the Olympics.
Greek Parliament
The Greek Parliament
was built between
1836 and 1847. It is
located in the
Syntagma square in
the centre of Athens. It
was first used as a
royal palace by the
King of Greece Otto
and then by the King
George I. Today the
building houses the
Greek Parliament.
Benakis Museum
The Benakis Museum was
founded in 1930 by Antonis
Benakis in memory of his
father Emmanuel Benakis.
The museum includes
plenty of exhibits from the
prehistorical to the modern
times. It focuses on Greek
culture over the span of the
country's history, but there
are some exhibits from
other countries, too.
National Gardens
The National Gardens were the former royal
gardens, designed by Queen Amalia in 1938.
Now they are opened to everybody. The
Gardens include a playground, turtle and duck
ponds, and a tiny zoo.
Monastiraki
Monastiraki is located
in the centre of Athens.
It is a place where most
people go to have fun,
to eat, to do shopping
and to walk.
Athens Concert Hall
The Athens Concert
Hall (Megaron) was
founded in 1991 and
is one of the best
cultural centres in
Europe. It is the top
choice for the ones
who love classical
music and arts in
general.
Hill Of The Nymphs – The National
Observatory of Athens
On the Hill of the
Nymphs was built in
1842 the National
Observatory of
Athens, which is the
oldest research
institute in Greece.
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center
The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural
Center was designed by the architect Renzo
Piano and was built in 2016. It is consisted of
a park and a building. The park is full of trees
and flowers. There, people can walk, exercise,
dance and watch a variety of shows. The
building houses the National Library of Greece
and the Greek National Opera.
Byzantine & Christian Museum
The Byzantine and Christian
Museum was founded in
1914, and houses more than
25,000 exhibits with rare
collections of pictures,
scriptures, pottery, fabrics,
manuscripts, and copies of
artifacts from the 3rd
century AD to the Late
Middle Ages. It is one of the
most important museums in
the world in Byzantine Art.
