When taking an online course, to what extent do you voluntarily seek out other students to support you in your learning? If you have done so, please describe some of the ways you and other students have assisted each other to improve your learning. I have checked if others are having similar tech problems. This semester I identified who the active participants were and reached out to them, and made coffee dates. We ended up forming a final project group. n/a sometimes N/A I have never sought out other students to assist in my learning. We shared our own opinions and we were very respectful of each others opinions, and that helped me learn a lot. Do not seek out other students support. Not necessary. Discussions often lead to points of view being bounced back and forth and backed up by others, equally understood by both sides. so mcuh I have not. Group Study / Teamwork I do not seek out others unless it is a part of a group assignment. No often, I work on my own most of the time. N/A People have given me advice through the discussion forum and have supported me with things I have wrote. qwer I have not done this Able to talk about the assignments and receive help. Know where one stands in the class as terms of grade. To help me understanding the question. i have not seeked help I speak with my other classmates for help and understanding quite often. I see one person in another class and we ask each other questions. I have spoke with another student whom I know through a mutual friend. They are just as confused, and dumbfounded with the course material as I am. Feeling unsure, and not confident in our abilities in the least bit. never I WORKED ALONE, BUT, I GOT SUPPORT FROM THE CAMPUS TUTORS We discuss topics thouroughly and take perspective from each others view points I usually don't seek out other students. I usually start with the professor. None By utilizing group discussions to finalize projects If I have a question that the instructor is not available or its trivial I would ask the class at large. Not as much in this course, but I have in others. I spoke in person with other students whom were taking the class in person and online. . I work strictly independently. I am self-driven and have no need for collaboration, although I have helped a student when asked. Hardly ever I did not seek out other students for help Students do not particapte as much as they should , seems as if they wait until deadline to submit work which hinders others. I haven't reached out for help, but have enjoyed interaction during discussions, I enjoy reading different viewpoints and ideas. have not done so Vovici EFM Analysis: Open SUNY COTE Online Learning Survey (Sprin... http://desktop.vovici.com/analysis/GenerateReport.aspx?esid=413511&... 84 of 129 6/25/2015 1:05 AM
  85. 85. Never When seeking support, I would try contacting fellow students through email and see if they would like to meet up in a group somewhere in the campus such as the library. While meeting and discussing, we would try to study first than do a discussion about what we learned. We would also point somethings that aren't noticeable that could important to understand. I dont seek out support. If im unable to identify a problem i will seek out the professor to clarify. When I need assistance with some of my school work from my fellow classmates, I generally just send out an email and I receive helpful responses. Quite honestly, I've never felt as though I was actually collaborating with my fellow students. Although this course is offered online, this college does not invest much effort in making the experience collaborative. I generally in this level of course do not look to my classmates. In past online courses, I have mostly asked questions of the professor before consulting with other students. I have worked with other students before, and find this useful as well. Shared text book Never had to seek out other students within my course. If I needed help, I sought out family members who knew more. Mostly because they think like I can and will dumb it down to make it easier for me to understand. Most others I meet or talk to in today's society use extremely complicated words instead of simple ones to make them sound smarter and more sophisticated when in all reality, they sound stuck up and like jerks. I don't. Most students never help or respond similar to the teacher. n/a Yeah As much as possible I do not. No too much the students via email. But I do ask the professor lots of questions :) n/a N/A I never had looked toward other students, but I looked toward my instructors to help understand what I couldn't on my won. I didn't seek out others I didn't, because I have not needed to. Not at all We commuicate with each other to see when the tests are and to keep up to date with work In terms of discussion boards, if I was ever unsure of how to answer a discussion question I simply looked at other student's responses to assist me. I don't actively seek out other students in the class. I may post a question about the course and if/when other students see my post they can respond. I haven't. I work better alone. Na n/a I have not sought out for help from other students. I have not sought support from other students can't relate to this I rarely do, I prefer contacting the course instructor as much as possible. I did not seek out the support of other students in the course. When there is a question it is posted in the question forum and classmates usually have the same question or can answer quickly Ask questions when need be. N/A I do not typically seek the assistance of other students but I have been asked by other students to help them with problems they are having with the course work. Never I don't seek out other students to support me in my learning. I have never asked for other students help. We all have different perspectives. So we all learn from everyone's experiences Posting discussion posts early so there's something to comment on for others. I don't really. text messages I rarely reach out to other students outside of the discussion boards. I got a couple of student phone numbers and we brain storm on what ever the conflict subject is at the time. I like to see how everybody is working, see how things progress. When working online I prefer to work independently. It gets really hard to really work with other students and I just prefer to be on my own in online classes. Not often Never None N/A No. Question not answered were because they did not apply. Collaborate off each other discussion answers and agree or disagree to get a different point of view. None I like to work along that is why I took an online course through social media outlets Mostly to teacher and if i did with peer it was with the labs I typically do not seek student advise, if i have questions, i email the teacher. I did it on my own I try to reach out to other students as much as possible by emailing or writing through blackboard course message. A few times I've asked or answered a question. I need not to seek other help to complete this class The discussion forum or feedback from work assignments help me to learn from my peers. Through Blackboard, we shared questions and resources N/A N/A In the discussions, things that we were unclear of, others would help clarify. The discussions also create topics to talk and think about. sometimes, if there is something i need help with, i ask other students if they know I was not asked to assist nor did I ask for assistance to improve my learning in this course. N/A I don't. When needed I asked questions and the students did respond. I have met colleagues online and have had discussions outside of class to study and better my understanding of a topic. 87. 87. NA n/a Na Yes, I have engaged in many student chats on the blackboard website. I do not typically seek out other students to support me in my learning. I'm not interested in talking to other online students. We have group discussions about our work in class and online (it's required by our teacher), I've talked to classmates on my own time about assignments, and there is a discussion board online that we can use freely to seek support. by reminding me of new information , or keeping me up to date on thing, someone that trustworthy, also someone that likes to study as hard as it do. Typically, I rely on my own understanding when completing course work. If group work is required, I am an excellent team player;however, I prefer to work alone is possible. N/A I once messaged the other students for an online course asking if they knew where to go to send submissions. That is it. I had done so on Angel, I didn't really see availability on Blackboard. I am friends with some students in the same online course and we text and talk as often as we can about the assignments and what the professor is asking for n/a N/A, participating students had very poor writing skills. Real life work experience was lacking and was apparent in the discussions. DDbh I had a question about some of the material and I posted it in online discussion board for all the students to answer. n/a When they tell me I need to fix something, I check to see what it is. I asked other students about deadlines and how they interpreted the material. N/A Peer review workshop in English 101. We would make suggestions to others about their essays they were writing. I will email a student if need be for additional information. I like to work alone If I can't figure something out or am having trouble, I email other students I seeked help with someone who is a finance major to help with reading some of the graphs. There was a few times that I may not have understood material, and I would email a classmate and they would always be willing to help and share ideas. I do seek out other students in my class for assistance only when i absolutely need it. N/A Only in open discussion groups when a certain question or topic is posed by the instructor. Otherwise, I reach out directly to my instructor/Professor. Almost never, the only time was to clarify about the assignment when the professor was unreachable; never about the course content. other students in the same major had to work with each other because the instructor would not return emails, answer a questions or provide feedback on grades I only go out of my way to seek other students' assistance if an assignment requires it, since I don't have a high opinion of my classmates. I prefer to seek help from the professor rather than other students. I do not seek out other students. By communicating with other students that I knew from the classroom environment I discovered that they were experiencing the same problems I was. I do not none I do not. 88. 88. Not very frequently; however, did sometimes. I haven't i have emailed another elder student in the group and we have shared support. If I don't understand an assignment or if I can offer help to another student, I post in "ask a question" discussion forums or message classmates. I do not seek out other students for help. i will post a discussion I offer to assist in any way that I can as I've taken many online classes. I engage other students in discussions and often we carry discussions longer than required and even onto private messaging. N/A I am taking a hybrid class and have some online classmates in my lab as well. We are able to communicate there. N/A This course did not really lend itself to group activities, and that is okay with me I have met with other students outside of school. I have gone to the tutor and I have gone to the teacher for help. We had to respond to other classmates each week for our discussion post. By doing this I was able to see others outlook on the subject as well as expand on my opinion. This helped me expand my own thoughts on each topic. none I have not. I tried to ask questions of other students about different modules, but not one responded. After a while I gave up and tried to answer questions myself with web research. NA I don't. Very little extent. n/a Well many of the people that were in my online course, were also in some of my classes on campus. when I didn't understand something, I would ask them if they knew what had to be done. not often encourage each other. Group Discussions I actively participate in the class forum, both responding to others and responding to those who respond to me. I did not seek out support from other students. This course does not use discussion boards for helping other students. Everyone in my class sits next to me in my high school so we communicate almost constantly about the coursework. I have never really sought out other students. N/A I did not for this course I don't. For this course, I never felt that I needed to-- but I knew that if I needed help, I could seek it out with no problem at all using the discussion boards. I've never really consulted the other students because our teacher, Mrs. Ford, explained things thoroughly. N/A We communicated in the discussion posts when a student had a question I answered to the best of my ability. lots of times none, most were a bunch of cry babies who expected a good grade handed to them and complained every time homework was assigned. I try to ask others to help clarify easily misinterpreted instructions, but that is about it. I also try to help others understand the instructions. It helps learn to study the material first before taking any quiz but since it is online you can look up the answer up. I LIKE IN CLASSES FACE TO FACE I THINK PEOPLE RELAEAY TOMUCH ON TECKONOLOGYS AND ARE STARTING TO LACK COMUNICATION SKILLS DO TO TECHNOLOGY N/A I ask other students their techniques for memorizing coursework, and sometimes if i find an important material related to the course, i communicate it to others I seek out to other students when I am unsure of what is asked of me to do and or I do not understand the readings or questions. I do not seek out other students, I seek out the professor Very little. Working together in lab and during lecture time is the best time to get information from others and I ask the other students to proofread my work and I proofread theirs. We proof read each other's essays. The flexibility gave me the opportunity to communicate with fellow students. We have read each others papers and corrected them with feedback. Asking questions I didn't understand. I would message them for help. . Discussions are highly encouraged in the online forum. Reading and writing responses on the discussion forums were helpful for interactive learning. I have offered to proofread (no one took me up on it), pointed out to the instructor that an online resource was not made available for most of the class (she made it available), pointed out that due dates were inconsistent with syllabus and asked for clarification (she corrected and clarified them), pointed out to a classmate that their discussion posts were in a format that required downloading (she asked me not to help her without asking permission first). I reply to at least half of posts (I received about 10 replies the entire course). I give encouragement and ask questions (I received about 3 answers). During the Final Paper module, I posted my strategies and plans and got no reply. I don't do this very often, most of my interaction with other students comes from group discussions. I haven't done so thus far. I do not seek out other students for help. If I absolutely don't know the answers to certain questions. After i respond i generally check other reponses against mine, then i know i'm on the same page. We would communicate about the different topics discussed in each section. If i do not understand how to complete a task or what is being asked, I will create a thread, email the professor or ask a peer in the online course. 90. 90. We answer each others questions using the discussion group, because the instructor does not interact with us. In 4 weeks, she has graded nothing, and has answered one question on one discussion topic. The rest, we have answered for each other.
