Nutritional Guidelines for Type 2 Diabetes Control 1. Eat Regular Meals: • Eat 3 balanced meals per day, almost every 3-4 hours: a Breakfast, a Lunch and a Dinner. • Eat a small snack before bed time: e.g. 1 cup of cereal with milk or a fruit and/or a “Light” yogurt. •Eat at the same time every day. 2. Reduce quantity and portion sizes of food: •Especially the carbohydrates: starches, fruits and milk. •You can have all types of carbohydrates but in measured amounts. 3. Reduce the use of Fat in meals: •Choose meats lower in fat: chicken, fish and lean cuts of beef and pork. •Remove the skin from chicken before preparing. •Prepare your meats using less far: grill boil, bake, or roast. •Use low-fat, 1% milk or fat-free, skim milk. •Reduce the amount of refried beans, we recommend cooked and mashed without oil only. LIMIT: Sweet Bread from the bakery, cookies, cakes, ice cream, and sweetened cereals, high-fat fast food choices. AVOID: Regular soda, regular sugar, honey, syrup, sweetened juices such as: Jumex, Sunny Delight, Tampico, and Gatorade. HEALTHIER CHOICES: Diet soda, artificial sweeteners such as Splenda, Equal, and Sweet & Low, Crystals Light, Water Fresh lemonade sweetened with Splenda or Equal.
