  4. 4. Ethiopia’s Mosinet Geremew won the 2018 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon with a course record of 2h:04m:00s in one of the most thrilling finishes in marathon history. The then 27 year-old, who entered the race just days before, sprinted across the finish line followed by four more runners within eight seconds. Debutant Leul Gebresilase took second just two seconds later (2:04:02), while defending champion Tamirat Tola finished third in 2:04:06. Such was the quality of the race, Tola beat his own 2017 winning course record time by five seconds yet still only scraped on to the podium. In all, seven runners clocked sub 2:05.00 - a unique result in world marathon history – with six of them no slower than 2:04:15. Held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, and under the aegis of the Dubai Sports Council, the 19th edition of the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon once again had athletics writers scurrying through the record books as the elites produced a catalogue of world-class performances. In almost perfect weather conditions, the leading group ran a very consistent pace. After a half marathon split time of 61:36, the world record of the time (2:02:57) was still in reach at 30k, which was passed in 1:27:35. However, after the last pacemaker dropped out, the pace fell and the athletes focused on winning the US$200,000 first prize. Five runners were still in contention when RECORDS FALL AS MOSINET, ROZA WIN 2018 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON RACE REVIEW WWW.DUBAIMARATHON.ORG 76 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2019
  5. 5. 8 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2015 the group entered the home straight but in the end it was the runner who entered the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon last who came in first. The women’s race also produced record- breaking results as Roza Dereje clocked a women’s course record of 2:19:17 and with it became the seventh fastest woman in marathon history. The Ethiopian broke away from a leading group of four in the final mile of the race and for the first time in marathon history four women clocked sub-2:20 in one race. Ethiopia’s Feyse Tadese took second with 2:19:30, followed by Yebrgual Melese (2:19:36) and defending champion Worknesh Degefa in 2:19:53. Again, such was the standard of the competition, defending champion Degefa smashed her personal best by more than two minutes yet still missed out on the top three. While Ethiopia dominated the Marathon, in the wheelchair races it was a Swiss double with “Silver Bullet” Marcel Hug winning the men’s title (1h:25m:14s) and compatriot Sandra Graf taking the women’s gold in 1:45:13. “I was happy to run at the pacemaker’s pace for the opening half,” said Geremew after receiving his trophy from HE Major General Mohammed Khalfan Al Rumaithy, President of the General Authority For Sports, and Julian Wynter, Standard Chartered Bank UAE CEO. “It was a good race with strong competition over a good course. When did I think I could win? I only thought about winning when I had one kilometre to go.” A record field of more than 30,000 runners entered the event, which included races at 10km and 4km. The winner in the men’s 10km Road Race was Samir Jouaher of Morocco (29m:31s) ahead of Ethiopians Birnanu Birhanu and Beyene Amsalu, while South Africa’s Gerda Steyn (34:35s) took first place with Myriam Lamure of France and Colombia’s Jinna Gar in second and third places respectively. In addition to Standard Chartered as title sponsor, the 2018 Dubai Marathon was supported by the Dubai Sports Council, adidas, Dubai Eye 103.8FM, Masafi Natural Water, Dubai Holding, Dubai Police and the RTA. These times are instantly relayed using an integrated communications system developed by Mika Timing, the marathon’s information services provider, to TV for immediate on–screen display. The same information is also delivered to the marathon’s race day Media Centre to provide an instant resource for the world’s media. All results will be posted on the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon website on race day. The address is www.dubaimarathon.org DRINKS AND DRINKS STATIONS Dehydration is the biggest problem that marathon runners have to overcome. In a hard race on a hot and humid day, up to four litres of fluid can be lost through sweating and exhalation. It is important for runners to keep well hydrated. It should also be noted that overhydration can also be an issue. It is just as important for runners not to overhydrate reducing sodium levels. Isotonic drinks supplied by Gatorade will be available at six stations. Drinks will be provided at the 10km, 15km, 20km, 25km, 30km and 35km stations. Water supplied by Aquafina will be available at every 2.5km starting from 5km with the last drinks available at 40km and the finish. Around 100,000 500ml plastic bottles of water have been supplied to meet the needs of the Marathon. In addition to water, many of the elite runners prefer to drink their own special drinks during the race. These special bottles are collected on Thursday night, kept in secure and cool conditions and placed on the route at the drink stations before the race. START DETAILS

Taking second place, he came closer to beating Kenya’s superstar Eliud Kipchoge than anyone else since 2015. Adola was even leading the Olympic Champion until around the 40km mark before Kipchoge finally managed to overhaul him and win by just 14 seconds. Adola had shown his potential before with a number of strong half marathon races. In 2014 he established a 59:06 course record at the New Delhi Half Marathon – a record which still stands today and is also Adola’s personal best. In the same year, he won a bronze medal at the World Half Marathon Championships. While Adola was the Marathon Newcomer of the Year in 2017, he suffered injury and health problems in 2018. After finishing below par in 17th position in London, he had to withdraw from the Frankfurt Marathon in October 2018 and will be hoping to bounce back in Dubai. The entire marathon world knows that Dubai is a super-fast course and Mengstu, who turns 31 three days before this year’s race, has proved his speed over shorter distances on the road, setting his best of 59:54 for fourth at the 2017 New Delhi Half Marathon. He was close to that best in Copenhagen in September last year, finishing ninth in 60:01. WWW.DUBAIMARATHON.ORG 2726 STANDARD CHARTERED DUBAI MARATHON 2019
  15. 15. ELITE RUNNERS ELITE MEN BIOGRAPHIES BIB: BERHANU Lemi Berhanu Date of Birth: 13 September, 1994 Country: Ethiopia Personal Bests Marathon: 2:04:33 (2016) Half Marathon: 61:37 (2015) Lemi Berhanu isn’t the only athlete in this year’s field whose best performances have come in Dubai. The winner in 2015 with 2:05:28, he finished runner-up the following year in what remains his personal best of 2:04:33. He can also run fast elsewhere and, like an increasing number of elite runners, has prospered at the marathon distance in China, winning the Hengshui title with 2:08:51 last year and in Xiamen in 2:08:27. The 25-year-old has achieved much in his career so far including two championship appearances in the marathon, firstly at the 2015 World Championships and then the Rio Olympics the following year. Unfortunately, neither race produced a distinguished result and he dropped out, as did many, in the extreme conditions of the Boston Marathon last April. Berhanu is clearly a man who reserves his best for Dubai. BIB: SAINA Emmanuel Saina Date of Birth: 6 September, 1992 Country: Kenya Personal Bests Marathon: 2:05:21 (2018) Half Marathon: 62:01 (2018) 2018 was the year that Emmanuel Kipkemboi Saina came of age in running terms, crowned by winning his debut marathon with an impressive 2:05:21 in Buenos Aires on September 23. This was a sensational course record and the fastest time ever run on South American soil. The 26-year-old Saina is making a habit of strong performances at debut distances: Saina ran 62:03 for 13th in the Berkane Half Marathon in Morocco on April 1, also last year. He set another personal best at 10km on his own Kenyan roads with 30:07 in Kabernet in the Rift Valley on November 11. Dubai will offer the chance for Saina to show if he can maintain this improvement on a top flight stage. He made a big impact in his debut season of 2016 on the Chinese road circuit, winning all four marathons entered with a best of 2:08:56 from Hefei in November of that year. Rotterdam and Frankfurt have been his happiest hunting grounds: the 22-year-old won in Frankfurt last October after finishing second the previous year. His personal best remains the 2:05:06 for third in Rotterdam last April after sixth place the year before. Kelkile Gezahegn also has six wins from as many marathon races in China. Seboka Dibaba has produced consistent results in the marathon for the past six years without being able to surpass his best performance of 2:06:17 in the 2012 Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon where the Ethiopian finished ninth. However, he has placed high in the standings on a regular basis with a runner-up spot in Mumbai in 2016 and twice finishing third in Seoul (2013) and Paris (2015). In 2018 he recovered from finishing down the field in Marrakech to take second in 2:14:35 in Beijing in September. Seboka is not related to the renowned trio of Dibaba sisters who regularly make the athletics headlines. Born and raised in Eritrea he had to run up to 20km daily to get to school, which was at an altitude of 2,400m. After competing for Eritrea in the 2004 World Junior Cross- Country Championships in Brussels in 2004, Abraham took the courageous step to leave the team and travelled to Switzerland to start a new life. Although it took him ten years before being granted Swiss citizenship, he was eligible to compete at the European Championships in Zurich 2014, where he finished ninth and helped Switzerland taking a bronze medal in the marathon team competition. Two years later in 2016 Abraham was the best European runner in the Olympic Marathon with a seventh place and won gold at the European Half Marathon Championships. It was also in 2016 when he clocked his personal best of 2:06:40 in Seoul. One of his big goals has always been the European record although this mark became harder to beat when Britain’s Sir Mo Farah improved the record to 2:05:11. Much of his marathon racing has been in Asia, with wins in Chunchon in South Korea in 2016 and a solid performance in Shanghai in 2017 when he placed seventh in 2:10:54. His most recent marathon was back in Chunchon for second place in 2:11:27 in October 2018 after taking second in Ottawa in May and breaking 2:10. Takele has done well in the half-marathon, where he has a personal best of 59:40 and took ninth place in the World Championships in 2014. Although the Ethiopian could not quite match the pace in the final section he still finished in a very credible debut time of 2:08:56 taking eighth place. Alamirew remained focused on the marathon in 2018, running only one more race - in the Amsterdam Marathon he clocked 2:10:35 and after a period of recovery he started preparing for the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. On the flat course his goal will be to improve his personal best. Alamirew was a 5,000m specialist on the track in previous years, posting a superb personal best of 12:48.77 at this distance. When he is able to transform this sort of speed to the marathon distance, he will undoubtedly achieve world- class results. He makes his Dubai debut having run a personal best of 2:14:25 in Tokyo a year ago, one of four marathons he raced in 2018. He prepared for and raced marathons throughout the year, rounding off with a solid performance of 2:15:25 at Fukuoka in early December. Sponsored by a running store chain at home, he finds time to join a weekly session of the one informal jogging group in Tokyo on a regular basis known as 080TOKYO. Indeed, his social media communications include the wise words: “Running is not pain alone. There are lots of fun things.” Jiromaru returns to Dubai following his 2:22:11 last year. Since then has set a personal best of 2:14:48 in Tokyo, achieved a month after his Dubai performance. He has been running marathons consistently but Tokyo last year marked the first improvement on his lifetime best for four years, having run 2:15:24 at the Otsu Marathon in 2014. Dubai is renowned as a super-fast course so Jiromaru is likely to be hoping to improve on his 2018 performances. In keeping with all elite road runners in Japan, he is a regular competitor at the half marathon with a best of 63:44 set back in 2010 at Oita. Time and again newcomers to the distance have achieved outstanding results and victories in the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon. Getaneh Molla is among the next group of Ethiopian debutants who could have an immediate impact in the marathon. So far the 25 year-old has focused on the 5,000m. Molla won the Ethiopian Championships at this distance four times in a row and last summer he improved his personal best to 12:59.58 in Brussels. However, he has shown his talent at longer distances with a couple of strong half marathon performances. He was fifth in the World Half Marathon Championships in 2018 and won the Riyadh Half Marathon, where he collected more than US$250,000 in prize- money. Molla should be ready to produce a good performance when he runs his first marathon on the very fast Dubai course. The Kenyan moved up to seventh place in the list of the fastest female marathon runners of all time as she improved her own Istanbul course record by a staggering four minutes. A year earlier, Chepngetich ran a very good marathon debut in the Turkish city with a time of 2:22:36. In between her two Istanbul Marathon victories, she placed second in Paris in 2:22:59. She has never raced on the track internationally and did not compete outside Africa until 2017. Two years ago, she had immediate success on the European road-running circuit when she took half marathon titles in Paris, Milan and Istanbul all within a two-month spell. While her personal best in the half marathon at the start of 2017 was 70:33, she improved this time over the year by more than four minutes to 66:19. Worknesh Degefa won the Standard Chartered Dubai Marathon Champion in 2017 when the Ethiopian caused quite an upset. Running her debut at the distance, she beat a strong field of experienced marathon runners to win the Middle East’s only IAAF Gold Label Marathon. Despite the immediate impact, Degefa has not raced the classic distance often, finishing only one more marathon since that debut victory. When she returned to Dubai a year ago she broke the 2:20 barrier with a time of 2:19:53 but in a unique race that underlined the event’s strength in depth this time was good enough only for fourth place. Worknesh Degefa is a very consistent half marathon runner - while she has a strong personal best of 66:14, she has also run sub-68:00 times on seven occasions. Degefa is originally from Bale, a mountainous area south of Addis Ababa in the Oromia region. That was a year after the 34-year-old Kenyan took the bronze medal in the marathon at the World Championships in Daegu in South Korea. Cherop is used to the pressures of top marathons, having set her personal best of 2:22:28 for second place in Berlin in 2012 and finished third and sixth on the tough Boston course in 2011 and 2014 respectively. She has consistently run in the mid-2:20s in her career and also shown speed over shorter distances. After winning the Padua title in 2:29:18 in April, she improved on that personal best with victory at Hengshui in China on September 29. Her time of 2:25:57 marked a massive improvement compared to 2017, when finishing fourth in Porto in Portugal with 2:46:08. Although the Ethiopian won the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon in 2014, her speciality at the time was the half marathon distance, winning the 2013 Marrakesh title in what remains her best for the distance of 68:48. The Moroccan victory was one of four half marathons she contested that year. In 2012 she took the Rabat title before finishing runner-up in New Delhi. Although she had previously competed in the marathon, her personal best of 2:34:36 was nothing of international significance. That changed in 2018 as Debele improved to 2:29:45 in Mumbai, a race notorious for its difficult weather conditions, before she sliced another couple of minutes off her PB in Hamburg, where she took second in 2:25:28. On the flat Dubai course Debele is a candidate for another major improvement. The Ethiopian grew up around 100km north of Addis Ababa and at the age of twelve her talent became obvious when she won all the races at her school from 100m to 5km. After taking second in a regional 10,000m she joined the training group of prominent Ethiopian coach Getaneh Tessema. After beginning the marathon year with the Nagoya event in Japan in mid-March, she had Amsterdam on her schedule after the race on the Gold Coast. The Dutch race was on October 21 and she returned to marathon action on December 9 to run 2:34:21 for 12th place at Saitama in Japan. Her personal best is 2:27:54 for sixth in Nagoya in 2017. The previous year she ran the Boston Marathon without being highly placed but set a personal best for the half marathon in winning the Matsue event in Japan in 71:48, a month before Boston in April 2016. Her three marathons in 2018 show consistent results and steady improvement. Previously she had been running around the 2:30 mark without showing signs of further improvement. On the other hand, her lifetime best for the half marathon of 69:22, set in finishing third in Istanbul in 2015, suggested she was capable of a marathon time in the mid to low 2:20s. She has now achieved this and Dubai should provide the ideal stage to take her rise to another level. As with an increasing number of the elite East African runners these days, Tsega has raced with success in China including victory in the 2017 Hanzhou Marathon. Utura has won her last two marathons and brought her best time down to 2:29:04. Her last race at the distance was the Santa Monica event in California in March last year and it was in her previous victory in Venice where she set her fastest time to date. She is also familiar with conditions in Dubai, having finished 11th in the 2017 edition in 2:37:27. The Ethiopian found international form early, excelling on the track to win a bronze medal at the 2007 World Youth Championships in Ostrava in the Czech Republic. The next year she won gold in the 5,000m in the World Juniors in Bydgoszcz in Poland. Utura has distinguished herself at the top level in cross- country as well, finishing high up in the junior race at the 2007 and 2009 World Championships.
