  2. 2. What is the ACL?Anterior cruciate ligament( ACL )It is a ligament joiningthe leg bone to thethigh bone. It islocated inside thecenter of the kneejoint. It is one of fourligaments in the knee.
  3. 3. How is the ACL torn?It can be torn in sports,falls, two wheeleraccidents.A twisting injury to theknee is the commonestmechanism of ACL injury. Itoccurs when the leg isplanted on the ground andthe thigh rotates inwards.Another mechanism iswhen the knee turnsforward excessively.
  4. 4. What are the symptoms ofan ACL injury?There is immediateswelling as shownin the picture.Pain mayaccompany.The knee may feelloose.Bruising may bepresent.
  5. 5. What is the outcome of ACL injuries?• The knee feels unstable and may give away repeatedly while coming downstairs or running• Damage can result to the cartilages and menisci within the knee• Early osteo-arthritis may set in.

What are the modes of treatment?• If the patient has repeated symptoms, then surgical reconstruction is the best form of treatment.• Non operative treatment may be indicated in older patients.• Surgical treatment is known as ACL reconstruction. The ligament cannot be repaired at present and has to be reconstructed.

How is the surgery done?• A piece of tissue either taken from your own body or a cadaver is used to reconstruct the ACL.• It is commonly done through key hole surgery to prepare and position the tissue ( graft)• The procedure is a day care procedure• The patient follows the physical therapy program
  8. 8. How long does it take to recover?• It takes six months to recover sufficiently to return to running and one year to return to sports.
