Amazon’s Alexa-controlled Echo speaker is a wireless
speaker. But it’s capable of much more. Using nothing but the
sound of your voice, you can search the Web, create to-do and
shopping lists, shop online, get instant weather reports, and
control popular smart-home products
◇ Amazon Echo (shortened and referred to as
Echo) is a smart speaker developed by Amazon.
The device consists of a 9.25 inch (23.5 cm) tall
cylinder speaker with a seven-piece microphone
array. The device connects to the voice-controlled
intelligent personal assistant service Alexa, which
responds to the name “Alexa”
◇ Simly we can say it’s a “SMART SPEAKER”.
◇ Information, music, news, weather, and more – instantly
◇ Controlled by your voice for hands-free convenience
◇ Echo begins working as soon as it detects the wake word.
◇ Echo is also an expertly tuned speaker that can fill any room
with immersive sound.
◇ You can pick Alexa or Amazon as your wake word.
◇ Echo's brain is in the cloud, running on Amazon Web
Services so it continually learns and adds more
functionality over time
◇ The more you use Echo, the more it adapts to your
speech patterns, vocabulary, and personal preferences
◇ Echo has been fine-tuned to deliver crisp vocals with
dynamic bass response
◇ Its dual downward-firing speakers produce 360°

In November 2014, Amazon announced Alexa
alongside Echo. Alexa was inspired by the computer voice
and conversational system on board the starship Enterprise in science
fiction TV series and movies, beginning with Star Trek TOS and Star Trek
TNG. The name Alexa was chosen due to the fact that it has a hard
consonant with the X and therefore could be recognized with higher
precision. The name is also claimed to be reminiscent of the Library of
Alexandria. In June 2015, Amazon announced Alexa Fund, a program that
would invest in companies making voice control skills and technologies.
The US$100M in funds has invested in companies including Ecobee,
Orange Chef, Scout Alarm, Garageio, Toymail, MARA, and Mojio. In 2016
the Alexa Prize was announced to advance the technology.
