  1. 1. Introduction Maintenance leads to long life of equipment. We, in India continue to make heavy capital investments, but not careful to maintain these. The maintenance policy is framed to answer questions like-(I) What we plan to do about breakdown of machines(II) What steps are we going to take to prevent breakdowns

Objectives of maintenance(I) To improve functional reliability of the production facilities(II) To Increase the life of asset(III) To keep up operational readiness of all equipments required for emergencies(IV) For safe production(V) It prevents wastage of spares, tools and materials(VI) More automation calls for sophisticated maintenance.
  3. 3. Failure analysis Newly installed machines show a very high rate of failure as well as very old machineries because of wear and tear. In these two extremes machines also fail but there rate is very low and it happens because of factors external to equipment.
