- The National Fire Protection Association allows four different methods of inspection record keeping fire extinguisher tags, which are attached to the unit, or labels, which are also attached to the fire extinguisher, or an inspection checklist maintained on file, or by an electronic method, The electronic record keeping option provides the most efficiency, reducing the time to perform inspections, reduces the time preparing reports, better ensures compliance by tracking units that have not been inspected along with tracking when annual and multi-year maintenance needs to be performed next.
- Smartphones with the appropriate software can be a excellent means to capture fire extinguisher inspection data electronically. Barcode scanners represent an efficient means to rapidly record data such as unit serial numbers and location identifiers. The ability to communication with web-based backend servers allows a practical means to rapidly and securely distribute inspection results and generate reports. The Android smartphone and the Fire Extinguisher Inspection App provides a low-cost easy to use all-in-one solution.
- The app guides the inspector through the inspection data collection process using the Smartphone’s barcode scanning capability. There is no need to purchase additional barcode scanning equipment. Inspection results can be emailed directly from the Smartphone or optionally, uploaded to a secure hosted server and accessed by anyone that you authorize. Aridhio Technologies’ hosts the server on Amazon.com’s cloud computing platform thus you do not need to install or maintain any software.
- If you do not have the Barcode scanner app, just search for Fire Extinguisher in the Android marketplace and download. The Fire Extinguisher Inspection App will prompt you to install the barcode scanner app later.
- Configuring the application is simply a matter of entering your name, for inclusion as the inspector in the reports, and an email address to send reports to. Additional email address can be included manually when sending the report. The Server URL and password fields are only used if you want to access data from the web server and synch data between multiple inspectors. This option requires registration at www.aridhio.com and can be trialed for free for 30 days. The web-based solution is most applicable to fire extinguisher servicing companies and large facilities such as universities and hospitals.
- The serial number or other barcoded ID is used to track the fire extinguisher. Select scan and point the smartphone’s camera at the barcode. The first time that the serial number scanned, enter the data about the fire extinguisher including size, type, year of manufacture, etc. On subsequent inspections, scanning the serial number automatically recalls this data. The location can also be scanned in to match the extinguisher with the location. The “Basic” is for NFPA10 monthly inspection and detailed for maintenance/service activities.
