3. Preliminary Project – Research & Planning
• How did you think about target audience?
• How did awareness of that audience impact
upon your visual design and choice of
language?
• What key points did you learn about Adobe
Photoshop and InDesign in constructing your
artefacts?
5. Reflections & Feedback
• I would improve everything I did because
what I created here would be a level 2 or
below.
• I got some positive criticism that would help
me on the next task.
• In the aspects of understanding of Adobe
Photoshop & InDesign I need to improve on
editing images, using layers, accurately using
grids, etc.
6. The music genre of my music magazine is:
• Rap and Hip-Hop
• and my chosen title was Gangsta Hop because
musicians who do Rap and Hip-hop are generally
gangsters but I changed it to ‘DA HOP’
7. So I researched this genre of music publication
and studied:
• Model 1 • Model 2
8. What I learned from this was…..
• Cover Design • Cover Lines
• Complementary cover • They have a lot of
design artists as cover lines
• Posed image • Giggs Hollow man Take your
• extra info/ features hats off
• Dj Whoo kid
• Artists Link ups and Break
ups
• Nicki minaj stupid hoe
• Drake Hip-hops new religion
YOLO
9. For my music magazine….
• Target Audience:
(you might like to take a photo of typical reader)
• Frequency: Monthly
• Cover price: £1.99
• Publisher: IPC
• Unique Selling Point: Subscribe to our magazine and
you get one free issue."
10. This is the face of the magazine
• Front cover • This is how it works
• Different cover lines all
on the right but are
scattered across to
appeal to the reader
• Logos/ visual motifs
used to replace the
letters for my masthead
• Feature bar to show the
categories of content
11. Here are the 4 original photographs I
shot for the project……
12. I modified each photograph; here is
the original next to the final version:
• Raw 1 • Final 1
• Here is how I changed the photograph and why
• I made changes to the midtones, highlight and shadows
to make the image appropriate for
13. And the second one:
• Raw 2 • Final 2
• Here is how I changed by changing the curves of the
darkness to look more smooth and because it looks
better.
14. And the third one:
• Raw 3 • Final 3
• Here is how I changed by increasing the brightness and
contrast to suit/ stand out against the bright
background colours
15. And the last one:
• Raw 4 • Final 4
• Here is how I changed the photograph by
lowering the contrast to make it look a little bit
more street.
16. Here are a couple of research models for
my contents page…
17. This is my contents page
• Contents Page • These are key features…
• The images related to
the article topics
• Number of issue
• Date *indicates the
monthly frequency*
18. How does the contents page link back to
the cover page?
• The contents page links back to the cover page
through various elements such as:
the colour scheme( red, white and black)
Cover lines on the front cover are the features on
the contents page for the magazine
19. Key points of contents page
• I have made the reader want to read on by
using exciting
• What are the links between images and
words?
• What determines the dominant stories?
• How have you gone about ordering the
information on the page?
20. How does the contents page flag up your
double page spread?
• The contents page is
22. This is why I think that double spread
works
• I think it is quite a successful double page spread
because you have the elements for it (main image,
headline, subhead, pull quote, byline) I am attracted
to it by the main image and the way the model is
posed looking to the right which the article is placed.
So your eye wonders from the image straight to the
article on the left.
24. This is how my double page spread works
• I have the headline cramped in the corner with the
because of the artists name which brings up certain
connotations. I only write some of the article in a
column on page 34 while page 35 is more like
reading a novel, I chose to break the codes and
conventions of professional music magazine double
page spreads. I used a background image to go with
the article.
25. This is how all three components are
linked together….
• All three components are linked through the featured artist (Giggs
Hollowman) through cover lines e.t.c.
• The red white and black colour scheme, although red doesn’t really show
much on the double spread page.
26. This is my re-drafted cover page
• Cover Page • Key modifications from
feedback
• More pictures have
been used
• Better cover lines
• Unique selling point -
Exclusive Interview
• 3D Masthead
27. This is my re-drafted contents page
• Cover Page • Key modifications from
feedback
• The title of the page
‘contents’ *informing
the reader it’s the
contents page
29. Key modifications to double spread from
feedback
• All original and self primary imagery
• Removed the image of the mix tape to look
more professional
