2. The aim of this survey, which was carried out in
our school, is to reveal if any measures
concerning water conservation are taken in Kavala
and the degree of awareness around water saving
among young people. 178 students , 98 girls and
80 boys between 12 and 15 years old participated
in the survey.
3. Kind of water consumed on daily basis

The survey revealed that overall most participants prefer drinking
tap water (64%), some prefer filtered water (25%) and just a few of
them prefer bottled water (11%)

When the students were asked if they applied water saving
measures in their house, the majority of them (up to 71%)
answered positively and a smaller percentage (29%) replied that
they did not.

Among the positive answers the most common practices for
water conservation were the use of shower (55%), the leakage
control in hydraulic installations (44%) and the use of a
dishwasher(43%)
6. Water consumption in the bathroom
The survey revealed that 43% of the students use quite a
lot of water and 42% of them use plenty of water for
shower or bath. Overall 85% of the students use quite a
lot and plenty of water when having a bath.
7. Water consumption in the kitchen
As far as concerns dish washing most of the students
use quite a lot (55%) or plenty of water (32%). Overall
87% of the children use quite a lot or plenty of water
for dish washing and cooking.
8. Water consumption for house cleaning
When it comes to house cleaning, it was found that 39% of
the students believe that their families spend quite a lot of
water on house cleaning and 15% believe that they spend
much water for the same activities. Overall 54% of the
students believe that their families spend quite a lot or
plenty of water for cleaning their houses.
9. Water consumption for washing clothes
The survey gave almost the same results for washing
clothes: 40% of the children believe that their families
spend quite a lot of water when washing clothes and 21%
believe that they spend plenty of water on this activity.
Overall 61% of the children believe that their families
spend quite a lot or plenty of water when washing
clothes.
10. How environmentally friendly is rain water collection and
usage?
When the students were asked if they think that the
collection and usage of rainwater is environmentally
friendly, overall 47% answered that it is a little or rather
friendly while the rest of them (53%) answered that it is
very friendly and highly friendly. We may conclude that half
of them have a rather negative opinion about rain water
usage and the other half a positive one.
11. How environmentally friendly is the usage of treated waste
water?
When the children were asked if they think that the reuse
of treated wastewater is environmentally friendly, overall
53% answered that it is a bit or rather friendly while the
rest of them (47%) answered that it is very friendly and
greatly friendly. We may reach the conlusion that half of
them have a rather negative opinion about the reuse of
waste water and the other half a positive one.
12. How conscious are you about water saving practices?

More optimistic are the results about how conscious the
students consider themselves to be. According to the
results of the survey 73% think that they are water
conscious and 8% very conscious. Only 19% declare to
be indifferent.

63 % of students believe that water is a natural resource
available in a sufficient amount and only 37% believe that
water on earth is not adequate for our needs.

In the last question of the survey concerning the institutions or
individuals that consume the greatest amount of water in the local
community, 36% of the students answered that household
activities affect the amount of available water in the area the most,
26% believe that industry consumes more water while the
agricultural sector comes third with almost 20% .
15. Conclusions
•Students must get familiarized with practices such as rain water
usage and waste water treatment and usage.
•They must be better informed about the universal lack of water,
since this will motivate them to develop good water-saving habits.
•All in all education seems to be the key factor that cultivates
environmental awareness for sustainable water.
Our survey led us to the following
conclusions:
•Most of the students are concerned
about water waste, yet they must be
better educated in using water wisely,
so that they can help secure water
supplies.
