Top 3 Things Teens Need to Know About the Paranormal (Special Report)

Right now, the #CharlieCharlieChallenge is making the waves among teens worldwide, and seems like a fun, harmless thing to try (and post about on your wall).

But is it really harmless?

While the Physics of it is simple (the pencil movements can certainly be caused by our collective breathing, the same way the Ouija board works on tiny tremors caused by our constantly-moving muscles), the point of 'what's moving it" really isn't the issue.

The more important issue is this: "What are we giving permission to influence us when we play games like this?"

This report might help.

Top 3 Things Teens Need to Know About the Paranormal (Special Report)

  1. 1. 1 The Top 3 Things Teens Need To Know About the Paranormal By A.S. Santos We'd talk about them late into the night, during retreats and sleepovers, or whenever we had to wait another hour for our sundo. There were many stories about them in our old school: about the bloody soldier in the bathroom of the elementary wing, the echoing footsteps on the third floor, the rocking chair in the H.E. room that always swayed back and forth on a certain nun's death anniversary. I’m talking about ghost stories. Creepy stories. The supernatural. The paranormal. You probably have your own: the stories in your own school, things that have happened to people you know, and maybe even your own personal experiences. They're interesting, exciting, and mind-boggling. And if you're a thinking teen—like I was—you probably have your questions about them, and are maybe looking for real answers. But this is where I have to ask you to stop for a moment. Just for a moment. Don't go there... At least not yet. Because I've been where you are... And there were certain things I wish I'd known, before I had certain experiences that almost led me down a darker path. This is the article I wish I'd been able to read, when I was 14 and "investigating" the third floor with my friends after class. The article I wish was available when I was 15, and we had a frightening experience during a "spirit of the coin" session. Most of all, it's the article I needed when I was a practicing fortuneteller at 17—a teenage psychic that even my professors went to for answers. This article may not have existed then, but it does now. So I want you to pay attention. Because these are the Top 3 Things YOU (and your friends) Need To Know About The Paranormal.
  2. 2. 2 Need-To-Know No.1 Learn About Spiritual Warfare This is the biggest need-to-know of all, for a very important reason: The paranormal isn’t just about Ghost Hunters and creepy stories and an exciting time with your friends. No my friend; that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Instead, the paranormal is the first layer of so many deeper truths: About how our God created all things “visible and invisible,” about the reality of the spirit world—and how we’re standing right now in the middle of a war between good and evil. And if you don’t know these deep truths, you might not know which side of the war you’re already playing for. This became a huge realization for me when my research led me to trying out divination practices, and very soon I found that I could already “read” people’s situations and future paths (a.k.a. “fortunes"). I already believed in and loved God even then, but I felt that I was helping a lot of people with my gifts. So I was asking myself: “Why would God give me this gift if He doesn’t want me to use them?” Later on, I realized that what I’d been calling my “psychic abilites” was actually a form of sensitivity plus the “gift of discernment” (one of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit). And just like everything else that God has given us—like a pair of eyes, a talent for drawing, or an ability with numbers—we can either use our gifts for God’s side (e.g., for seeing the beauty of creation, creating inspirational art, or getting needed mathematical answers) or for the side of the enemy (e.g., for focusing on what’s ugly, creating pornography, or cheating on taxes). The thing you should know about the enemy is: They can make you believe you’re playing for God’s side, even when they’re already using you for their own agenda. (Author’s Note: I share more about my crossing over from being a psychic to being a counselor/coach/author in my testimony in Kerygma’s October 2014 issue. You can check that out, too. )
  3. 3. 3 So start learning more about the truth of Spiritual Warfare, so you can make a more decisive choice about which side you’re really on. Here are places for you to start: Books To Read: EXORCISM: Encounters with the Paranormal and the Occult by Fr. Jose Francisco C. Syquia Fr. Jocis is Manila's exorcist, and through a retelling of cases he's handled he shows Catholics the reality of spiritual warfare, our Church’s weapons against the enemy, and how we can win the battle in our daily lives. FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT: How To Rescue Someone You Love From The Occult by Jeff Harshbarger (with Liz Harshbarger) Jeff is a former Satanist who went back to Christianity in large part due to his mother’s prayers. Here he shows the different practices and symbols used by different Satanic groups, so you can be more aware and guard yourself against them. THE BONDAGE BREAKER by Neil T. Anderson Neil focuses on the daily spiritual battle that goes on inside all of us: In the realm of our minds. He exposes how the devil exploits our negative thoughts, irrational feelings, and habitual sins to bring us away from God’s truth & love. 4. 4. 4 Warfare Seminars given by our Exorcist Priests. These are sometimes organized by Totus Bookstore (telephone +63 2 7234326). Masses on Healing the Family Tree. This is particularly helpful for us Filipinos since many of our ancestors (and some current relatives) may have had involvements with albularyos or mangkukulams. Fr. Mario Bije, SVD of Christ the King Seminary in Cubao, Quezon City, Philippines celebrates Healing Masses every first Saturday of the month at 3:00pm. A deliverance minister and an exorcist priest, Fr. Mario specializes in healing the family tree and can discern if you were a victim of a curse. You can contact him to schedule a consultation at svd.vocations@yahoo.com. Any Catholic Community you can regularly join, so that you'll be surrounded by believers who are also strengthening their faith. In these communities—like The Lord's Flock or The Light of Jesus—members often have opportunities to attend talks about getting God's guidance, discerning God's will, and learning more about the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. What to Avoid: Particularly when you’re not yet equipped in Spiritual Warfare, stay away from all books, seminars, materials that have to do with: Tapping into your subconscious / using alpha states to receive “extra information” with your mind. Ouija boards (including “spirit of the coin” and “spirit of the glass”), Charlie Charlie, seances, or any activity for contacting spirits. Anything to do with fortune telling (card reading, palmistry, using crystal balls, etc.). Mangkukulams, Albularyos, anting-anting, and the like. Information on “ancient knowledge,” “esoteric knowledge,” or “hidden knowledge.” Also Latin “prayers” you don’t know the translations of / are not part the Catholic book of Roman Rites, and anything to do with the word “occult.”
  5. 5. 5 Need-To-Know No.2 Look for the Normal Before the Paranormal Not everything that’s weird / creepy / scary is because of ghosts. In fact, that’s one of the useful things we can get from television shows like Ghost Hunters, whose members first try to find normal explanations for supposed paranormal phenomena. Here are just some of the common things we often mistake for the paranormal: Strange sounds / movements at night in a house or building. These can easily be caused by the normal expanding ang contracting of metal and wood, slight shifts on the ground (caused by vehicles passing by, etc.), as well as scurrying rats and other small creatures. You see someone out of the corner of your eye. In Psychology there is a phenomenon called “matrixing,” wherein our brain tries to make sense of something that seems incomplete by “filling in the blanks,” and then assuming it’s something recognizable. It’s similar to what we do when we look at random cloud formations: we find shapes and patterns and think they resemble a bunny or a car. So if for example you thought you saw a person “out of the corner of your eye” (who suddenly disappeared when you turned), check out if the appliances / light-and- dark areas / objects in that location might actually be positioned in such a way that led your brain to think it was the shape of a person. A heavy feeling / uneasy feeling / feeling sick in a certain place. Some places actually cause these feelings due to the higher presence of geomagnetic or electromagnetic fields in the area. These fields either occur naturally because of the place’s location / structure, or because of the presence of cellular sites nearby. Higher geomagnetic and electromagnetic waves causes not only these “sick” feelings, but can create visual & auditory hallucinations as well.
  6. 6. 6 Need-To-Know No.3 What If You Seem To Have Psychic Abilities? “Should I develop my psychic abilities?” A number of teens ask me this because—like me—they feel that they have a gift, and they want to use it to help people. These teens are the reason why I wrote the SPRG Trilogy (three continuing novels about an atheist college girl who can sense the spirit world, and this eventually leads her to know more about God). These teens are where I used to be, when I was a practicing fortune teller at 17. To truly honor their question, my answer to them comes in two parts: First: Before you do anything about your gifts, learn more about Spiritual Warfare (see our numero uno need-to-know). Then: When you’re more grounded in the spiritual truths about your abilities, decide on which path of learning you want to take: 1. The Science Path The paranormal exists because our God did create “all things visible and invisible,” and there are scientists who’ve been trying to apply current scientific findings to understand these unexplained phenomena. While you might not be involved in this level of research yet, you can start learning more about this through the following fields: Psychology When you learn more about how the human mind works both at the conscious and subconscious level, you can better tell the difference between the psychological and the spiritual.
  7. 7. 7 Quantum Physics Even Einstein acknowledged that there were “spooky” things happening in matter that science couldn’t explain, and right now there are new discoveries (like String Theory and Zero Point Field) in this area that might start explaining just how amazing our God’s mysterious universe really is. Biology Some biologists are looking into how prayer affects people’s health (even across long distances), even at the molecular and DNA level. 2. The Faith Path There are Catholic Communities with “deliverance ministries,” and through them you can learn more how to deeply root your faith in God even as you discover which of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit you have that you can help others with. Some gifts you might have are: The Gift of Discernment Can help you distinguish what’s “of God” and what isn’t. The enemy’s biggest tactic is deception, so proper discernment and guidance is needed by a lot of people. The Gift of Tongues When people are afraid, we often don’t know what to pray for—some of us can even be paralyzed by fear. With this gift you can pray not just for yourself but also for others, particularly in times of spiritual attack. The Gift of Healing You can strengthen other people’s faith in God by becoming His instrument of healing for them. This could be emotional, spiritual, mental, or physical healing. Let Your Interest Lead You Closer To God, Not Towards The Other Side Remember the saying that “Curiosity killed the Cat?” Don’t worry… I don’t believe it either. Instead I believe that “Stupidity killed the cat. Curiosity was framed.”
  8. 8. 8 It’s okay to be curious. It’s in our blueprint. It’s why we have so many technological advancements, why we now have the skills we didn’t use to have when we were five or six years old, and why you’re reading this report. But: It’s not okay to be stupid. I know you’re a smart teen. So if you’re still interested in the paranormal, do the smart thing and let your interest lead you closer to God. The other side sucks. © A.S.Santos is the author of the SPRG (Student Paranormal Research Group) Trilogy, a college paranormal romance series set entirely in Manila, Philippines.
