  3. 3. Why should we know about this ??!  Most of IT celebrities are still alive . − Isn't it a chance for us to learn from them ? ..  Whoever you are and what ever you are doing you still have the chance to change the world . − Every simple idea could be a reason for changing the world .

Lawrence (Larry) Ellison - childhood  Oracle's founder and CEO  born in New York.  At 9 months he contracted pneumonia  his 19-year-old mother gave him to her relatives in Chicago to raise  Until he was 12 years old he did not know that he was adopted  His adoptive father had lost his real estate business in the Great Depression

Larry Ellison – fail !!  He has joined University of Illinois.  During the final exams in his second year, − his adoptive mother died − he dropped out of school  Joined the University of Chicago − dropped out again after the first semester  Moved to California − For the 8 years , he has bounced from job to job
  7. 7. Larry Ellison – first success  Worked as a programmer at Amdahl Corporation  Made his own company with 2 of his team colleagues − Called Software Development Labs
  8. 8. Larry Ellison – ORACLE appearance  Came across a paper about RDBs  won a 2-year contract to build a RDBMS for the CIA − The project's code name: ORACLE

Larry Ellison – Oracle appearance  finished the project a year ahead of schedule. − used the extra time to develop their system for commercial applications.  In 1980 , Ellison's company had only 8 employees − revenues were less than $1 million  in 1986, they got an initial offer with $31.5 million

Larry Ellison – ORACLE's drop  in 1990 the company posted its first losses − Oracle's market capitalization fell by 80% − The company was about to BANKRUPT !! − he replaced much of the original senior staff with more experienced managers − channeled his own energies into product development

Steve Jobs - Childhood  Born in 1955, in San Francisco, California  adopted by Paul Jobs − after he promised that they would send Jobs to college.  He went to college but decided to drop out because it was too expensive. − Didn't have a dorm room − Slept on the floor in friends' rooms − Returned coke bottles for 5 Cents to have food

Steve Jobs – First Success  started a company in a garage on 1976 − He was 20 years old − With his friend Steve Wozniak  Made the first Apple − A local store offered to bought 50 machines and to finance the production  Jobs sold his WV and Wozniak sold his HP Scientific Calc.  Apple couldn't stand the competition with IBM
  18. 18. Steve Jobs – his shock !!  Jobs company came back again with Macintosh  Steve jobs convinced John Sculley to leave Pepsi Cola and to work as Apple CEO  1986 , Apple revenues was 2$ billion and with 4000 employees  Jobs fired by Sculley from Apple !!

Tim Berners-Lee – the www father  The man who invented the world wide web (www)  Born in 1955 in London, England  His parents were both mathematicians  graduated as a Physics major from Oxford University in 1976  he built his first computer using: a soldering iron, TTL gates, an M6800 processor and an old television

Tim Berners-Lee – inventions  In 1989 , proposed a global hypertext project  designed to allow people to work together by combining their knowledge in a web of hypertext documents.  Tim wrote − the first World Wide Web server, "CERN HTTPd", − the first client, "WorldWideWeb" a WYSIWYG hypertext browser/editor − ran in the NeXTStep environment

  33. 33. Tim Berners-Lee - Quotes  The Web as I envisaged it, we have not seen it yet. The future is still so much bigger than the past.  Celebrity damages private life.  Sites need to be able to interact in one single, universal space.
