Soil and Water Conservation Practices, Kongwa
and Kiteto/TZ
• Fanya juu terraces and tied ridges: data collected in August 2019 in
cooperation with TARI, ICRAF, UDOM
• New work plan:
- Additional data collection on rip tillage (two MA students
from UDOM) and cooperation in economic survey (Julius)
- Follow-up to fill gaps in fanya juu and tied ridges investigation
and validation of results

Farm Household Case Studies, TZ
• Focus on household as a group (multiple household members,
different contributions and converging/diverging evaluations)
• Methods:
- various forms of interviews to capture motivation for
substantial changes, household dynamics and arrangements
- linkage diagrams (or influence diagrams) to describe emic
perspective
• Critical issue: confidentiality

Using SIAF with a transformative approach
• Evaluation of technologies on two levels:
- Performance of technology
- Enabling/constraining environment
• From evaluation to scaling: not only tailoring technology to perform
better, but also piloting approaches to promote an enabling
environment.
• Example: Not only changing the technical set-up of forage chopper,
but also supporting farmer groups (training) to develop gender-
sensitive constitutions
