In what ways does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
My magazine uses many conventions of a professional music magazine.
Some of the conventions which I have used are : Masthead , Strapline ,
Contents page , Double page spread , Price and barcode and I have
maintained a consistent layout throughout. I decided that I should use
all of these conventions because of the reader expectation. Readers
expect a magazine to have everything that the other magazine they read
have. If it doesn’t then they will probably think of the magazine as
inferior to other magazine on the market.
My magazine challenges the conventions of a music magazine because I
have decided to use a front image which does not go with the house
style of the magazine. I wanted the front cover to draw peoples
attention and I felt that having an image which clashes against the
colours already being used would achieve this.
I feel that having a front image which is not the same colours as the rest of the
magazine will help to draw the readers attentions. It makes my magazine stand
out in the shops and I feel that it makes my magazine look more interesting.
How does your media product represent
particular social groups?
My magazine represents my target audience of young adults because I
have used music which is popular with this age range. I have looked at
other magazines which are catering for these age ranges and they have
given me ideas to what I could do to make my magazine more appealing
to the social group.
Results from my questionnaire gave me a good idea of what sort of
things my target audience liked. It also helped me understand what
things I could include in my magazine to draw them in.
I wanted a magazine which would stand out in the shops and draw
readers attentions. After asking people in my target market I feel I have
What type of media institution might distribute
your media product and why?
I would aim for my magazine to be sold at most major retailers. Such as :
Whsmiths and Tesco . This is because I want my magazine to be seen by a big
proportion of my target audience.
My magazine would also be advertised on social networking sites such as
Facebook and Twitter. This is because sites like these have become very
popular with my target audience of young adults. So advertising on them is a
good way to reach them and let them know there is a new magazine out there.
I will set up a website for my magazine which will be www.tune.co.uk . This way
readers will be able to go to the website and find out about the magazine . For a
small fee they will also be able to read an online edition of the magazine. This is
something which is becoming more popular.
Who would be the audience for your media
The audience of my magazine will be young adults aged 16 – 20. I am in
this age group so it is easier for me to create a magazine aimed at them
because I feel I have a good understanding of what people in this age
range would like. Also a large amount of music out at the moment
seems to be aimed at this age range, This means there is a wide choice
of bands/artists which can be featured in the magazine.
However this does not mean that other people would not like to read
the magazine. The magazine will be sold in places where it will be seen
by a large number of people in a variety of different age ranges, any one
of these people may want to read the magazine. But having a target
audience just makes it easier when deciding what to feature in the
magazine and how it will be advertised.
How did you attract/address your audience?
Readers will be attracted to my magazine because of the music that it
A big thing which will attract readers is the fact that my magazine will
have a section which shows local gigs and local up and coming bands.
This is something which I do not feel has been done by any other major
magazines so it will be a USP ( unique selling point ). I do not feel it
would be very hard to implement this localised section of the magazine.
Each magazine will just have to vary slightly by each county. However
the rest of the magazine will be the same. Local bands will have the
chance to have themselves featured in the magazine and this will
encourage readers to read the magazine. Doing this will also enable the
magazine to appeal to a wider group of people because peoples music
tastes may vary dependent on where they live.
What have you learnt about technologies from
the process of constructing this product?
Creating my magazine has taught me a lot about the different
technologies which are required to make and develop a magazine. I
have been introduced to Publisher , this enabled me to make my
magazine and I feel that my skills in Publisher have increased
drastically whilst creating this task.
I have improved my skills of Fireworks . Which is an image editing
As my skills in these programs have improved I have been able to make
my magazine look much more professional.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do
you feel you have learnt in the progression from
it to the full product?
As well as improving my skills with the relevant software
required to make a magazine I have developed a good
understanding of the conventions required in a magazine. I have
increased my vocabulary with a wide range of magazine
terminology and I understand what needs to be done to a
magazine to improve it visually.
