Evaluation (new)

 1. 1. magazine coursework
final evaluation
Tom Dransfield
2. 2. conventions
In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
After analysing a number of different magazines, I had a good idea of what magazine product should look like. In order to create an effective magazine, it needs to include several conventions that all popular magazines use. These conventions include a masthead, a layered effect , a colour scheme and a variety of text formats. I have tried my best to use and apply these conventions into my own product to make it effective. For my front cover; I created an eye-catching masthead that will grab the attention of the reader, a large central image that produced a layered effect, along with other text that showed what else is included in the magazine. For the contents page; I used the titles features and regulars to show what was included in the magazine. I also used another large image to promote the main article. Something not commonly used in magazines that I included was an Editor’s note. This was a small text box that included a comment from me about what was exciting in the magazine by me, acting as the editor. I used a special design for my page number which played on the word Pulse. The design was of an ECG which ran through to the DPS Article too. For my double page spread article; I used a large image again of empire nation and a large title that will grab the attention of the reader. There is a suitable amount of text and images which will keep the reader interested instead of boring them with too much text. So overall, I used a variety of conventions that are used in professional magazines to make it effective. I used eye-catching designs and vibrant pictures and texts to make my magazine successful.
3. 3. social groups
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Through a questionnaire, I was able to ask people in my target audience what they wanted from a music magazine. By doing this, what I put in my magazine would reflect my target audience because what they wanted has gone into it. My target audience is teenagers of both sexes aged 16-24. The magazine is of a general genre so it will cover all kinds of music interests such as Rock and RnB. Therefore the magazine should be enjoyed by all because there is something for everyone inside the magazine. So my media product reflects particular social groups in a variety of ways. The music that articles are written about are all aimed at the younger generation and the way the text is written and the content of the article and images is all aimed at youth aged 16-24. The colour scheme is bold and imaginative which reflects the bold and unique personalities of the youth today.
4. 4. institutions
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Pulse magazine is aimed at large audience, all with varied interests. For that reason, I would want a large and popular media institution to distribute my product. One such institution is WH Smith. WH Smith is the UK’s leading book and magazine seller and a wide variety of customers come through its doors. For that reason I would want WH Smith to distribute my magazine because it will make my magazine available to the wide audience that will be interested in Pulse magazine.
Due to lack of money, magazines are not as popular as they used to be. Sales have decreased in recent years and magazine companies are now acting to prevent this. Magazine companies are now posting popular articles on their website free of charge for readers to view. This acts as like a taster, and if the customer enjoys reading the free article then they would hopefully buy the magazine to read the rest. For that reason, I would set up www.pulse.co.uk which will act as the main website of the magazine. It will include recent articles that have been published in the magazines in order to tempt the reader.
5. 5. audience
Who is the audience for your product and how will you attract them?
As previously mentioned, the audience for my magazine is young people of both sexes aged 16-24. The magazine will include different articles on different types of music such as Rock and RnB. It is a general magazine that will interest a wide audience. I will attract my audience in a variety of ways:
The magazine itself. Using bold logos and a vibrant colour scheme will interest customers as they walk past.
Posters. Placing posters in shops such as WH Smith, our main distributor and in stores such as hmv where the music we write about will be sold.
Website. Using the website www.pulse.co.uk, I will be placing magazine content which will tempt the reader in buying the actual magazine. Online subscriptions can also be made via the website.
The magazine will include images, articles, competitions and posters that all will attract the customer into buying the product. From the questionnaire, I found out that it was these that the audience wanted from a magazine so if the results of research were accurate, then sales should be high because I have included elements that the audience want in my magazine.
6. 6. technologies
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this process?
To construct the magazine, we were required to use a desktop publishing programme. Our centre chose to use Microsoft Publisher. I do not have much experience in using Publisher so was quite apprehensive when I was using it. However, after a few practice attempts, I soon found my feet and I was able to use the program at skilled level. As, from research, I knew what a magazine should look like, it was just a case of using elements from existing material onto my own product. I was soon able to make a magazine that looked authentic but original. When it comes to further publishing using a computer, I will be able to use Microsoft Publisher to create good designs.
7. 7. progression
Looking back ay your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
When making my preliminary magazine, I did not know much about what a music magazine should look like nor what the audience wanted from a music magazine. But by doing existing media research and doing a questionnaire, I soon found these things out. I learnt what a front cover, a contents page and a double-page article should look like. I applied this to my own magazine and although I tried new things and challenged existing conventions, I think I came out with a product that looks authentic. I have been able to use designs that I never thought I could make. I have used the conventions that are in existing media products and tried to make them unique to my own magazine, such as the Pulse masthead that I used. I found out what the audience wanted from a magazine including images, taglines, posters and articles and added this to my product in order to increase interest. Overall, I think I have made a unique product that looks authentic which will interest many customers due to its general genre.
