A-Level Media and Film Studies<br />Welcome to Media and Film Studies at City of Ely Sixth Form College<br />We hope tonight will give you a taster of what our courses in Media and Film can offer<br />Please don’t hesitate to speak to myself (Mr French) or our student representatives (Cat and Emma) about any questions you may have<br />
  3. 3. Why study the Media?<br />The media can influence almost every part of your life as a student<br />The media is ubiquitous and unavoidable in contemporary society, it is all around us<br />As students in a modern world, you bring your own experiences of the media to the subject<br />
  4. 4. A few more reasons to study the Media …<br />The economic, social and cultural importance<br />of the media is there for all to see. The media:<br />Generates employment and profit<br />Provides us with information about political processes<br />Offers us ideas, images and representations that shape our view of reality<br />Influences our social lives: arguably, the media has replaced traditional institutions such as the family, the church and the school<br />
  5. 5. In essence, the Media is something that must be studied to be fully appreciated and understood.<br />So, what will you be studying?<br />

Media Studies : AS Units<br />The following units will be taken in your first year:<br />Induction Unit: Basics of theory and practical work<br />Production Portfolio: Practical work creating a music magazine, working with Desktop Publishing<br />Exam Units: <br />Representations of gender, age and ethnicity in television drama<br />The production, marketing and distribution of video games<br />
  7. 7. Media Studies: A2 Units<br />The second year will consist of:<br />Advanced Practical Production on Viral Marketing. You will create a marketing campaign for a new film, producing a website design and new film trailer<br />Exam Unit: Analysis of the Representation of ‘British’ in film and television. This will focus on both traditional and contemporary texts<br />
  8. 8. Entry requirements: A Level Media <br />Grade C or above in either GCSE English or Media Studies. <br />IT skills are essential for practical work<br />
  9. 9. A-Level in Film Studies<br />The perfect companion to Media Studies AS/A Level<br />The course takes a predominately academic and theoretical perspective, with some opportunity for practical work to consolidate understanding<br />Practical tasks will be inspired by the great directors of cinematic history<br />
  10. 10. Film Studies: AS Units<br />Students will become familiar with the ‘language of film’, focusing on the construction of works of cinema and the impact upon the audience. <br />Assessment is in the form of an essay and a practical task: shooting and editing a short film sequence<br />Exam Unit: Comparing the representation of crime in British and American Cinema<br />

Film Studies: A2 units<br />Students will have the opportunity to produce a research project, focusing on a film of their choice<br />Exam Units: <br />Exploration of urban conflict in World Cinema <br />The emotional impact of film and cinema<br />Critical perspective study of a film chosen by the exam board<br />
  12. 12. Entry requirements: Film Studies<br />Students should either have a Grade B in English Literature or Grade B in Media Studies at GCSE Level<br />An interest in film is highly recommended<br />
  13. 13. OCR Nation Level 2 Media<br />This is a one year course we offer as part of our Media education at Ely<br />The course is made up of 6 units<br />At the end of the course you will gain a Pass, Merit or Distinction<br />The qualifications are designed to recognise candidates&apos; skills, knowledge and understanding of the media sector. <br />Suitable for pre- and post-16 candidates, they provide a high quality, industry-recognised qualification.<br />
