Editor's Notes

  1. The metaphor of empire is workable in that affiliate marketing is sprawling and expanding, covering most of the civilized world, though it lacks any sort of central control. The eastern half of the empire is less well remembered or understood but was richer.
  2. 1) “Traditional” networks are known as transparent networks. This is where the retail world is centered but also a fair amount of lead gen. You’ll typically pay a network fee of 20-30% of the commissions paid to affiliates. 2) “Tracking Platforms” is an admittedly nebulous term that includes SAAS, out-of-the-box, build-your-own-network, and low-cost services. They typically make money with volume. 3) CPA networks are typically lead focused. The barriers to entry are lower, so competition is high. Some have differentiated themselves, like MediaTrust moving to PPC and ClickBank focusing on virtual products. Others, like Copeac, have gone under. COPEAC and Intermark Media went under after the Federal Trade Commission filed suit against them for fake news sites like channel2local.com, touting Acai Berry, colon cleansing, and other products. In 2010 they were named #1 affiliate network in Performance Insider's poll.4) There are also proprietary and reseller relationships.
