• The Smart Grid domains are groupings of actors with similar objectivesThese different groups interact with each otherSecure information exchange between domains is a critical element of the smart gridAs the Smart Grid matures and the system is optimized, the domains and the information flow may change
 • Provides additional details on actors and networks within each domain compared to domain diagram (not all actors and communications are shown)For analysis and understanding of the smart grid, not specifying design (descriptive, not prescriptive)Securing the information systems so actors can access necessary information while protecting the data and networks from unauthorized access is an important goal for Smart Grid Success

NIST Roles & Framework
“Primary responsibility to coordinate development of a framework that includes protocols and model standards for information management to achieve interoperability of smart grid devices and systems…" (EISA 2007)
Interoperability—the ability of diverse systems and their components to work together
NIST devised a three-phase plan to rapidly establish an initial standards framework , while providing a robust process for continued development and implementation of standards as needs and opportunities arise and as technology advances.
