Temperature of the Earth (student preso)

 1. 2.

Simple diagram of greenhouse effect

In order, Earth's most abundant greenhouse gases are:

water vapor

carbon dioxide

methane

nitrous oxide

ozone

CFCs

 2. 4.

Methane is a chemical compound with the molecular formula CH 4 .

It is the simplest alkane , and the principal component of natural gas . Methane's bond angles are 109.5 degrees.

Burning methane in the presence of oxygen produces carbon dioxide and water.

The relative abundance of methane and its clean burning process makes it a very attractive fuel .

However, because it is a gas at normal temperature and pressure , methane is difficult to transport from its source.

 3. 5.

Methane is a relatively potent greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential of 72 (averaged over 20 years) or 25 (averaged over 100 years). [1]

Cause of this rapid global warming over such a short period is the release of methane into the atmosphere.

Methane is 60 times more powerful than CO2 as a greenhouse gas

 4. 6.

By far the most important non-CO2 greenhouse gas is methane, and the number one source of methane worldwide is animal agriculture

About 85% of this methane is produced in the digestive processes of livestock

One natural cause is a release of methane gas from arctic tundra and wetlands. Methane is a greenhouse gas.

 5. 7.

Burning fossil fuels is one thing that causes pollution. Fossil fuels are fuels made of organic matter such as coal, or oil. When fossil fuels are burned they give off a green house gas called CO2. Also mining coal and oil allows methane to escape.

Methane is naturally in the ground. When coal or oil is mined you have to dig up the earth a little. When you dig up the fossil fuels you dig up the methane as well.

 6. 8.

Another major man-made cause of Global Warming is population. More people means more food, and more methods of transportation, right? That means more methane because there will be more burning of fossil fuels, and more agriculture.

 7. 9. B y looking at that graph, which is by and large the overwhelming result when you do a Google Image Search for “global warming graphs,” one could very easily decide that Global Warming™ most certainly exists. It’s much warmer than it was in 1860, and we have more industry now, so Global Warming™ is definitely the fault of humans, right? Well, if that graph were indicative of the bigger picture, this would be a reasonable statement. You guessed it, though, it’s not:
 8. 10.

How to reduce methane gas?

Being Veggie!!!!

Population control

Less burning fossil and fuel

 9. 11.

the best way to reduce global warming in our lifetimes is to reduce or eliminate our consumption of animal products. Simply by going vegetarian

 10. 12.

Use Renewable Energy

Water energy

Solar energy

Wind energy

Geothermal energy

Less burning fossil and fuel
