Output devices

  1. 1. Lecture # 311/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 1
  2. 2.  Output is data that has been processed into a useful form Hardcopy : Hardcopy refers to printed output Softcopy : Softcopy refers to data that is shown on a display screen or is in audio or voice form.11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 2
  3. 3.  An output device is any type of hardware component that conveys information to one or more people Display Devices Printers Speakers Data projectors Chapter # 3 , page # 9311/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 3
  4. 4.  Most commonly used output device Categories of Monitors  Monochrome monitors  Grayscale monitors  Color monitors  See page # 9411/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 4
  5. 5. CRT monitor (Page # 95) A CRT, for cathode-ray tube, is a vacuum tube used as a display screen in a computer or video display terminal. Images are represented on the screen by individual dots or “picture elements” called pixels. A pixel is the smallest unit on the screen can be turned on and off or made different shades.See Page # 9511/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 5
  6. 6. Flat-panel display - made up of two plates of glass separated by a layer of a substance in which light is manipulated Categories of LCD Active-matrix - each pixel on the screen is controlled by its own transistor TFT- Thin film transistor Passive-matrix - a transistor controls a whole row or column of pixels11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 6
  7. 7.  Paper-white displays  Creates higher contrast , Used by desktop publishing specialists, newspaper or magazine compositor and other persons who creates high quality printed documents Electroluminescent Displays(ELDs)  Uses phosphorescent film held between two sheets of glass. A grid of wires sends current through the film to create an image Plasma Display These are display devices that use gas plasma technology11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 7
  8. 8.  Size  The Larger the size the bigger the image  Measured diagonally Resolution  Sharpness and clarity of image  Number of pixels on the screen  640X480 means 640 pixels horizontally and 480 pixels vertically  Video graphics array11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 8
  9. 9.  Refresh Rate  Number of times per second that the electron gun scans pixels on screen  Measured in Hertz Dot Pitch  The distance between the liked colored phosphor dots of adjacent pixels  Measured as a fraction of a millimeter(mm)11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 9
  10. 10.  A printer produces text and graphics on a physical medium  Printed information is called a hard copy, or printout  Landscape or portrait orientation Impact printers Non impact printers11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 10
  11. 11.  Impact printers form characters and graphics on a piece of paper by striking a mechanism against an inked ribbon that physically contacts the paper  Dot matrix printer ▪ Line Printer ▪ Band Printers11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 11
  12. 12.  A nonimpact printer forms characters and graphics on a piece of paper without actually striking the paper  Laser Printer  Ink-Jet Printer  Thermal Printer11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 12
  13. 13. 11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 13
  14. 14. 11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 14
  15. 15.  It is used to print large format images Used for architectural, engineering drawings and construction maps Drum Plotter Flatbed Plotter11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 15
  16. 16.  An audio output device produces music, speech, or other sounds Most computer users attach speakers to their computers to:  Generate higher-quality sounds for playing games  Interact with multimedia presentations  Listen to music  View movies Headphones are speakers that cover your head or are placed outside of the ear Earbuds (also called earphones) rest inside the ear canal11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 16
  17. 17.  A data projector is a device that takes the text and images displaying on a computer screen and projects them on a larger screen  Digital light processing (DLP) projector11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 17
  18. 18.  An interactive whiteboard is a touch- sensitive device, resembling a dry-erase board, that displays the image on a connected computer screen Home Task all-in-one peripherals, photo printer, Dye- sublimation Printers11/21/2012 Designed by Prof. Anosha Khan 18
